UNTO THESE HILLS . . . HOLS TON VALLEY LIFTS HER EYES 2oa.t of Arms The central part of the coat of arms is a shield divided into fields. Within each field is a hand holding aloft a torch. The larger black field represents the students lack of knowledge. The white field symbolizes truth and light secured at Holston Valley High School. The white torch on the black field burns brightly with the fire and determination of youth. The torch in the white field burns less brightly, but is an older, wiser and steadier flame. The letters H and V above the shield, stand not only for Holston Valley but for Health, Happiness, Valor and Victory as well. The rope extending from the sides of the shield, representing the spirit of our school, shall always be held together in a common cause, namely, to represent and strive to keep above reproach the reputation of our alma mater. Last is the motto found beneath the shield. Veritas Omnia Vincit which translated means Truth Conquers Everything. The entire coat of arms is in black and white, our school colors. Time is fleeting - both for those who sought and found and for those whose quest is yet un-satisfied . Cherished thoughts are many as we recall our rewards for work WELL DONE . 5 Within The boy with a mechanical brain One who knows Do -Re -Me Thinking or watching? Read this! Understand 9 A mego Story of Our School Look here ing it over pi j 7 FOREWORD Our lifes, like the fashions and styles of today, are in a state of constant change. Looking back over our four years in high school, we can recall many momentous changes in our lives each year: our teachers, our school, our interests, our activities, -- all have changed. We also have learned values that do NOT change over the years -- knowl- edge, morals, and deep friendships. And having once passed through that DOOR, love, honor, and lasting respect for our Alma Mater is so deeply engraved in our hearts it NEVER changes. 8 FOREWORD The sands of time have run out on our days at Holston Valley High School and we must now turn to the future. This, the 1965 issue of THE CRITERION marks the end of an important phase of our lives . The scholastic challenges have enabled us to become better students to be pre- pared for a more successful future . Socially our interests were broadened and the many opportunities afforded us have enriched our lives . To you, the students and faculty of 1964-65, we, The Criterion Staff, offer this Yearbook as a record of our last year at Holston Valley High School. 9 The God who gave us Life, gave us Liberty at the same time Thomas Jefferson 10 CONTENTS h-i Iv IV l J i Administration . . . . . . Activities Athletics . . . Advertising Scenery IN MEMORY Mr. John W. Combs, who lived with and for Holston Valley students from the time our school first started, has left many vacant hearts in the classroom and on the campus.
