THE 1974-75 CAVALCADE Holston High School Damascus, Virginia 24236 Volume XI to MRS. MARY TAYLOR, who has supervised the preparation of delicious meals in our cafeterias, first at Damascus and then at Holston High, for almost thirty years. 2 a AND STAFF r =; 1 _ 1 This 1974-75 academic year at Holston High School has brought many changes, and I hope most of these changes have been for the best and are only part of the continuous growth of HHS. We, the administration, faculty, and staff have attempted to make your learning experiences meaningful and enjoyable. Now, as you enjoy this yearbook, which represents a history of this year's activities, we hope you will turn your thoughts and actions to the present and to the future. Help us build a school that will serve our present needs and meet the challenges of our changing times. I personally have thoroughly enjoyed my first year at HHS and wish to thank each of you for your loyalty and cooperation. 4 Mr. V. T. Rector, III, Principal B. S. , East Tennessee; M. S. , Radford The 1974-75 school year has been a great year, from the excellent display of school spirit and sportsmanship of the students to their gains in aca¬ demic endeavors. Congratulations to the school and students on hosting the State Wrestling Tournament and the Regional Track Meet. We know you will want to go onward and forward in 1976. Mr. H.J. Preston, Asst. Football, Basketball (Left at mid-year) 11 Cafeteria Staff Rachel Baughman Gay Blevins Nancy Gentry Holston's cafeteria staff is known throughout the country for the delicious meals they prepare. Not only do they prepare nourishing meals for almost six hundred students five days a week, but members of the staff often help pre¬ pare and serve food at special events, such as the Mother-Daughter Banquet and the Athletic Banquet. In addition to the full-time cafeteria staff of sev¬ en, there are two substitute workers — Mary Frances Garrett and Pearl Hender¬ son. These ladies work hard and deserve a lot of credit. Mrs. Mary Taylor, cafeteria manager, is retiring this year after serving in Washington County schools for almost thirty years. We thank her for her years of service and wish her the best! Mrs. Taylor 12 Jua’ ita Hackney Mamie Jones Bess Neely Custodial Staff Holston High is lucky to have a trio of very de¬ pendable men who keep our school and grounds looking their best. Mr. Hackler, Mr. Cox, and Mr. Hackney not only clean, and maintain our building consist¬ ing of halls, offices, restrooms, cafeteria, gym and twenty-odd classrooms, but also give our campus an appearance we can all take pride in. Because of the dedication and conscientiousness of these men, our school continues to keep her youth despite ten years of the constant flow of human traffic. Clyde Cox, Jr. Bernard Hackney E. Hackler 13 Bus Drivers This big yellow monster is seldom still and seldom empty. Holston has eleven buses and eleven bus drivers this year. Out of these eleven, four of them drive specifically for Holston. The other drivers drive for the elementary schools, as well as for Holston. Chester Jones and Ernest Trivett also have runs to and from the technical school. Our four drivers drive quite a few miles in a single day: 1) Chester Jones drives 93. 3 miles a day and this includes a run to the technical school, to Liberty Hall two times, and then to Holston. 2) Ernest Trivett drives 69. 4 miles a day. He goes through Konnarock, down to the elementary school, over to the bowling alley, and then to Holston. He also drives to the technical school. 3) Raymond Ritchie has a run of 48. 1 miles per day. Mr. Ritchie leaves from Holston and goes to Columbus- McKinnon and back to the elementary school. He then goes to Bethel and, finally, to Holston. 4) Mildred Widener drives 44. 7 miles per day. She goes to Liberty Hall twice every morning. We thank our bus drivers for their hard work! Everyone worked hard and looked forward to this night and it will live in their memories for a long time. The class history and prophecy were read. Each person prepared his will, leaving some senior possession to friends left behind. These wills were also read aloud Class Night. Many awards were given to outstanding class members. We have compiled an instant replay of this year's events. Meeting dead¬ lines, writing copy, and cropping pictures takes time and hard work. So, if you see an annual staff member dragging around, sleepy-head¬ ed and incoherent, you will know that he has beenup all night slaving to make your yearbook a good one. 80 Cavalcade Staff rjl . Holston's Library was struck by continual change this year as a new face, new services, and new furniture were added. The new face was Mrs. Wolfe, our Library Aide. When she arrived in October, she found plenty of work to be done. She has helped tremendously by taking over many of the clerical duties. The new service provided by the library was undertaken by Jerry Lewis and Billy Stike. They serve as Audio- Visual helpers. The new furniture added was the swivel magazine rack which certainly adds a mod touch to the library. The Library Club performed the same routine duties as always but, hopefully, enjoyed the fun of presenting Spook Day on Halloween, the Book Fair in February, and most of all working, on the 2 beauty contests. 84 Miss Wildermuth, librarian is sponsor of the Library Club. This year there are approximately thirty members. They are active in tutoring seventh graders in subjects such as math, science, and history. The first tapping ceremony was held in the fall. The Presidents of the NHS Clubs from Abingdon, John Battle, and Patrick Henry were here to administer the membership pledge. A reception was held after the ceremony for newly-tapped members and their parents. Scholarships are available through this organization for active members. 96 Officers: M. Walls, Treasurer; S. Let's try to look like we're working ! Flood?--We still have to meet our deadline! Our serious sponsor? Deadline day? O nrvvdCJn Editors’ Page --Well, Sarah, this is it--the final page ! ! — Whew! I didn't think we'd ever get finished, Kathy. _ You know, it HAS been hard work, but it's been fun, too! Remember that first deadline? — Yeah. It flooded and we didn't have school. --And I ran out of gas trying to get to school to get the pages ready to mail. --Well, the thing that I remember most is the trouble we had getting a camera that would work. Then, when we finally got a camera, we took about twenty shots without any film in the camera. _ That was funny! We're lucky that Mrs. Counts thought it was funny, too. _ Yeah, she did. Say, do you think maybe we're what are known as 'teacher's pets'? After all, we got away with a stunt like that! — Well, we're lovable, that's for sure. We should be grateful, too, that most of the teachers were understanding and helpful about our work on the annual. --Mr. Groseclose and Mr. Jones deserve special thanks for helping with the art work and running errands for us. --Say, I just noticed. The annual room looks strange- -it's clean and everything is where it belongs. — Of course it is, Kathy. We have to get next year's editors started off on the right foot — they'll get discouraged soon enough . . . I'm still wondering about teacher's pets . . . . Teacher's pet? Deadline day? 119
