scnoop -I-TTSTORY In 1922 the people of what 18 now Holmes Liberty ccmmun1ty kn w they were to have a new consolidated school, for lt was ln that year the long fought for bond issue carr1ed One half mile strip off the north s1de of Holmes had gone to Lykens school. The greater part of L1berty had consolidated with Jaclson at Sulphur Sprlngs Sc by the consolldatlon of Holmes townsh1p wlth a two mile strip of Liberty, a new school distrlct was founded and called Hblmes Liberty Later, the greater part of Tod went into the new district, giv1ng it forty elght square miles of territory The most suitable central location was decided and eight acres of land were purchased from W S Spiegel for the site of the bu11d1ng and the schcolds playground Work began on the building on January 13, 1923, by the Miller Brothers Construction Company It was finished and ready for occupancy on October 10 1924 However, some outside work such as walks and landscaping was completed later The Total capital outlay in the ini tial cost of our school was 8165,l7l Ol Of course, that does not in clude the add1t1onal cost of tho improve ents made later The f1TSt school buses were Rec buses, and the garage was bu1lt to house them When the Recs had to be replaced by the Ford buses 1n use now, the ga rage had to be made much larger Other improvements made since the maln bulldlng was completed are the farm shop the romodeling of the old farm shop 1Ht0 a music room, the modern llbrary the upsboedate kitchen improvements in landscaplng As was stated before Holmes Llberty school was ready for the 404 puplls who entered 1ts portals for the flrst txme on October 10 1924 Center whlle others had been attendlng Bucyrus Hlgh School so the school started w1th a Senlor class and had S1X members 1n 1tS flPSt graduatlng class 1n 1925 Thus the llttle red school houses remembered by the older res1 dents of the com unlty as Beach Grove,Brandyw1ne Crum Everhart, Carl Bash Pleasant Home, Bethel Holmes Center, Fllcllnger, Quaker Vore, Glen Eden Lemert and Oceola became a trad1t1on of the past They had to go to glve way to the advanclng demand of progress Credlt should be g1V9n to former County Superlntendent Fred B1t t1kOfGF who has been called the 'Father of COnS011dat1OD ln Crawford County for h1s untlrlng efforts ln brlnglng about the establlshment of Holmes Llberty school We must also g1VS due respect to the men who have made and kept one of the outstandlng schools ln the state P J Foltz G M Dewltt John A McKn1ght and Rolla D Webster, the four superlntendents of Holmes Llberty 1 .
