Holmes offers chemistry, physics, physical geography, biology, and general science as a beginning for further study. FUTURE EINSTEINS Logical reasoning and accurate thinking are attained through the study of math. Regardless of the vocation you decide to follow, one of the handiest tools you can have is a sound mathematical basis at your fingertips, 31 'TIIE DIABCII 0l7w'il-1ME History in the making-world events and current news-as well as in valuable lessons out of the past are subjects ot interest to history students. FRIENDLY BELATIQINS ln the present-day world triendliness and brotherhood toward nations are needed in establishing a permanent peace. Our social sciences, sociol- ogy, psychology, geography and civics, are essential to every student. fn l i l 32 A PLANS FUB TONHMRROW7 Bookkeeping, typing, shorthand, and salesmanship, included in our commercial department, are the resources on which many of our students will draw when they go out into the business world. THE PBESSES BULL Making up a special part of Holmes' curriculum, the industrial arts course includes printing, woodwork, and the metal shops. The A Cappella Choir, directed by Oscar T. H. Schmidt, gained recog- nition in both the school and c-ommunity for its beautiful singing, The clear and blending tones of the mixed voices delight all who hear them. Their performances show deep appreciation of music. 35 CHARACTER The YMCA, through its Hi-Y and Tri- Hi-Y clubs, endeavors to create, maintain, and 'extend high standards of Christian character. The clubs help to fill the needs of the under-privileged and to do good throughout the community. Every Saturday evening, one of the schools of the surrounding area sponsors the tradi- tional Y-Dance. PEUPLE 0F DISTINCTIUN lt you are an upper-classman at Holmes and are outstanding in character, schol- arship, leadership, and service, you might be elected to the Holmes chapter of the National Honor Society. This is the dis- tinction that was bestowed upon this group of seniors at the Honor Day Pro- gram of 1950, when they were juniors. A casual visitor to the third floor of the ad building would see turmoil, confusion, and chaos, but in reality the members ot the staff of our school newspaper, the Holmespun-Student, are engaged in the task of publication-from covering the beat to putting the paper to bed. With considerably less hubbub, the business staff gets the advertising, sends out the bills, keeps the books, and de- livers your newspapel' to your locker. 39 STABDUST MELUDY Queen-June Weber King--Don Daly Attendants Pat Wilson Jim Osborne Fred Winscher Barbara Evans Nancy Colley John Stevenson Jim Sorrell Mary Craig Nancy Marksbery Jack Brown Charles Coker Virginia Pickett 40 treasure the memories of e had decorating We shall always our junior prom--the fun W the gym, the thrill of dressing up, the romance of dancing to the music of the orchestra, the enchantment of the night itself. Nancy, Mary, and Carole are members of the senior class, and they will be sorely missed. Joyce, Joan, and Marion will return next year to form the nucleus of next year's rah-rah corps. Almost every boy upon his entrance at Holmes dreams of a letter in some sport or another. A C is an honor not accorded to all, but the com- petition is open to each boy, No matter in which sport the award is made, it requires long, arduous, and at times seemingly unnecessary practice. But all boys that have won 'the emblem in the past will tell all who aspire to win one in the future that the reward is well worth the effort. LEFT TO RIGHT: D. Daly, J. Donoghue, D. Hibbard, E. When we entered, we felt very small and in-- significant, now, as we leave, we suddenly feel very big and important. For many of us, this will complete our formal edu- cation, for others, this is only the end of the beginning, for college and higher schooling are in the future.
