were different this time with Holmes drop- ping a 57-78 game. Guard Jack Insclman was the only Husky named to the tourna- ment team. Revenge came sweet and quickly as the basketballcrs nipped Central five days later at Taylor Gym. With the victory the Huskies moved into the number one spot in the city. The Huskies went with their ironman five lineup all year. Foul trouble or a big lead was the reason for substitution. In the backcourt, senior Robbie Mayte, 48

Overall in district play Holmes’ 12-2 record was best of all teams. The Huskies took all four games from their principal opponents, Lee and Jefferson. In the first half of district we defeated Jeff for the first time in Holmes history 61-41 behind a brilliant game by guard Jack Insclman, who scored 30 points while shooting 14 of 18 from the field. He also had seven steals, six rebounds and five assists. The Huskies continued to win big defeating Lee 64-49. The Jay upset and a 42-43 loss to Churchill prevented Holmes from winning the first half cham- pionship. In the second half of district the cagcrs went undefeated, but the margins in the big games were much closer. Robbie Mayte sank a baseline jumper with seven seconds left in the game to beat the Jeff Mustangs 59-58 in overtime. To clinch the second half title the Huskies nipped tough perimeter shooting of the Volun- teers 57-55. In pre-district play Husky cagers post- ed a gaudy 18-3 mark. They won the Northside Tournament beating Central Catholic in the finals 66-58. Tim Sud- darth, Mac Garrett and Robbie Mayte were named to the all tournament team. Two weeks later they faced the same Central team in the finals of the Coca- Cola Holiday Tournament. The results 47

All District Honorable Mention and Ju- nior Jack lnsclman complimented each other well. Robbie, all-district in the ’73-74 sea- son, was the ball handler and the play- maker of the team. When the going got tough and others were not hitting, Robbie was an excellent outside shooter. Jack was on the district first team and the high scoring guard of the combo averag- ing 13 points per game and was often the leading scorer. He combined this with ex- cellent defensive and rebounding ability. At forwards were a pair of 6’2” lcap- ers, Mac Garrett and Ed Bryant, who con- sistently outplayed bigger men. Garrett, a junior, averaged 11 points and eight re- bounds a game. Ed Bryant led the Green and Gold with five assists a game. Mac and Ed both made 31-AAAA honorable mention. The man in the middle was 6’8” Tim Suddarth. In his third year as a starter. Tim became Holmes all-time leading scorer, breaking the previous record held by John Thornton. This season Tim averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds a game. He had an outstand- ing shooting touch for a big man and could also take the ball to the hoop with authority. Tim was first team All-District and second team All-City. 49
