We know that the book represents quite a little work, we hope some original thinking, and certainly a little heartache. lf it does not merit your approval, we can find consolation in the fact that it is different, representing the energy, the cre- ativeness, the humor, and the spirit of our seniors and under- classmen. The staff has worked hard, day in, day out, to edit this yearbook. lts edition has been no bed of roses. We've had priorities and war-time shortages with which to contendg but we feel that, in spite of our many ups and downs, we are giving you the best yearbook in the history of our school. Both the staff members and sponsor sincerely believe that when you receive your yearbook, you will be very pleased with its contents. Proceeds from the store go to the annual tund. THE LIBRARY Reaching new heights with the addition of approximately IBO new books, the Holmes County High School Library has more than ably served the purpose as reterence and reading room tor the students. Miss Mary Coleman, with her student assistants, has done a remarkable job of remodeling and rearranging the facilities ot the library. With the arrival of the new books interest in tiction, biography, and research has increased by leaps and bounds. VISUAL EDUCATION This is a new development in our educational program. Every month we have a movie for the whole school. The projector can be used by any teacher who wishes to use visual education in her teaching plans. None of us would know what to pray, So I just whipped up these few words to say. Oscar lived a life of great fear, Every time he come out, I-loward was near. Oscar was the Senior's life long pet, Not just an ordinary rat. I-lis Iife's ambition was to be free, But l-loward wouldn't let him, would he? We hope I-loward's conscience don't hurt him Although this occasion makes us very sad. Another enemy of Oscar was John Rooks, John often hit Oscar with a stack of books. You might think this funeral silly, But we don't think so, really. Oscar died in the line of duty Friday night, So we will mark his grave as a historic site. H-oiumeiirwp AYERS HO-CO-H I MEMORIAL The annual must be out by April lO, decid d the staff in unison at its first meeting early in October. The editor and Miss Ayers conferred with Mr. Al B. Block of the Rose Printing Company, and Mr J. Ray Rainer, our photographer, and the l-lo-Co-l-li Memorial slowly began to take shape. Dummies were drawn up by day and re-drawn up by night. The assistant editor wandered from office to bandroom to ag shop interviewing faculty menbers, compiling lists, and collecting copy. Students began wandering around the campu, with cameras slung over their shoulders. The pho- tographer came in the fall and again in the spring. Long lists of clubs and class rolls were collected and handed to the typists. Money for clubs, for pictures, for sponsors, for deposits began to come in and Mary and Charlane were kept busy with their lejgers and receipts books. Everybody who had a spare moment was urged to write the class poem or the class will or Oscar's obituary. Finally the day came when there were no more pictures to take, no more write-ups to call in, no more typing to finish ...... and off to Tallahassee went Doris and Miss Ayers with the whole annual. lt all came back again .... this time to be proof read and re-proof read . . . and finally sent off again. There was nothing for the Staff to do except wait anxiously until the l-lo-Co-l-li Memorial came out April lC. BAND The Army Air Corp's Military Band, Marianna, Fla., gave a most enjoyab-le concert in the audi- torium Friday, September IGth. The Band was conducted by Warrant Officer Driggers. The concert was opened with a few bars from the Air Corp's theme song, after which the band broke into a spirited march. In the middle of the program, Captain Bates of the Air Corp gave an interesting talk appealing to I7 year-old boys by telling them the opportuni- ties and advantages of being a part of the Army Air Corp Reserve. C. H. S. gym is going to be the setting for one of the gayest, most enjoyable fun fests in the history of this institution. Games will hold sway from 8 til' IO, dancing from IO til' IZ. The gym will truly be a scene of Yuletide Revelry. The auc- tioning of cakes, box suppers, and cases of coca- colas will add food to the fun and frolicing, but the highlight of the evening will be the election of Miss Holmes County High School-the ideal girl whose countenance, along with her competitors, will grace the feature section of the '44 HO-CO-HI Memorial. THE BLUE DEVILS VICTORIOUS The Crestview Tigers took defeat as part of the day's work when they opposed the Bonifay Blue Devils Friday night, Having set the pace for a victorious year, the fast and hard-hitting Devils took the Tigers by surprise in the first cjuarter, when Bird Dog made the first touchdown amid the shouts and cheers of the enthusiastic and teeming crowds. That's truly the spirit of our newly elected cheer leaderseMargaret Browning, Eloise Buie, fvlary Williams, and Frances Williams. Already these girls are hard at work, It takes hours and hours of drill, strenuous exercises, and OH, those sore aching muscles. But it takes something more than physical exertion, and these girls have it- a deep interest and pride in their school. From seven until nine, the gym was a mod scene of penny pitching, apple bobbing, cake walking, bingo-ing, fortune telling, and weight guessing. At nine the crowd assembled in the auditorium for two one-act plays- Pistol Packing Mama, and A Train Going South -and a concert of string music. When school started, we decided to call football practice and about twenty-five boys responded. From then on there was no doubt about a successful seasondthe boys really want- ed to play ball. Lettermen James Childs, Whitey Urquhart and Gene Sims returned for baclcfield duty, leaving only one first string vacancy, which went to Olen Reynolds. The forward wall was built around Capt. Arch Sims and Charles Gomillion. Most of the other men -Sirnnons, Bush, l-laclcney, Sellers, l-lowell, Lowe, Reg- ister, lvliller, Barefoot, Dyson, Fulford and Terry -were green but developed fast as the season started. James Childs, Roger Sellers, Earl Bush, Cr, W. Barefoot and Billie Noblin are graduating sen- iors. These boys played fine ball, but Noblin and Bush were very valuable as reserves -they played any position that I asked and did a fine iob.
