We are all a part of her, as those who have walked through her halls in the past were a part of her. Whether we realize it or not, her influence has been strong upon us, helping us in the formation of our ideas, providing a basis for our future lives, and, above all, increasing our knowledge and wisdom. We Wish for Holmes junior College every prosperity. ANN NEAVES Editor CONTENTS DEDICATION ALMA MATER CAMPUS ADMINISTRATION IN MEMORIAM CLASSES FEATURES ACTIVITIES ORGANIZATIONS ATHLETICS ADVERTISEMENTS MR. HILARY O. THOMAS Dedication In September of 1946, after having spent four years in the service of his country, there came to this college as head of the agriculture department a young man filled with enthusiam for his Work and with a keen interest in young people. A grad- uate of Holmes Junior College in 1958 andof Mississippi State College in 1940, he entered into his duties conscientiously, winning the esteem of faculty and students alike. From 1946 through 1955 he sponsored a splendid program of student social events on the campus. He received his Master's Degree from Mississippi State College in 1950 and in 1951 was made Dean of Men. For his untiring efforts to give the students of his department the best instruction possible, for his great understanding and sympathy, and for his help at all times, we are happy todedicate this 1954 edition, of HORIZONS to MR. ' A Education does not mean teaching people what they do not know. It means teaching them to behave as they do not behave. It is not teaching the youth the shapes of letters and the tricks of num- bers, and then leaving them to turn their arithmetic to roguery, and their literature to lust. It means, on the contrary, train- ing them into the perfect exercise and kingly continence of their bodies and souls. It is a painful, continual, and diffi- cult work to be done by kindness, by watching, by warning, by precept, and by praise, but above all-by example. -JOHN RUSKIN f Admznzstwztzon X In Memoriam MRS. BERNICE DELOACH RODGERS Because of her faithful and untiring service to the school as dietitiang because of her unceasing devotion to the activities of the schoolg and, above all, because of her interest in and love for countless students who were privileged to know her, this page of HORIZONS is affectionately dedicated to the memory of MRS, BERNICE DELOACH RODGERS. dietitian: and, abOVC who were y dedicated BOARD TRUSTEES MR. I don't ask for any place in the line- up, play me where you need me. I only ask for the stuff to give you a hundred per cent of what I'Ve got. If all the hard drives come my way, I thank You 'for the compliment. Help me to remember that You won't let' anything come that You and I together can't handle. And help me to take the bad breaks as part of the game. Help make me thankful for them. And, God, help me always to play on the square, no .matter what the other players do. Help me to come clean. Help me to see that often the best part of the game the game is helping other guys. Help me to be a 'regular fellow' with the other players. A A Finally, God, if fate seems to uppercut me with both hands and I'm laid up on the shelf in sickness or old age, help me to take that as a part of the game also. Help me not to whimper or squeal that-the game was a frameup or that I had a raw deal. When in the dusk I get the final bell, I ask' for no lying, complimentary stones. I'd only like to know that You feel that I've been pa good guy- 4 ' - ' A . Northeast LETTERMEN JAMES FREE ga,,,,,,i Red, playing his last year for Holmes, gave the team a boost at mid-season. The only regular left from last year, he could hit that basket well and was a fine team man. We shall miss you next year, Red Cgfjfgf Smiley was a dependable man defensively and was good on getting rebounds. His willingness to prac- tice and his desire to improve paid off for him. A sophomore, he will not be wearing the maroon and white next year. i BILLY DEAN RAY farm,-4 Hustle, spirit, and determination mark this boy, who has practiced for perfection. Good luck, Billy! ZACK GRAY Cefzfef and Fmuafd A letterman from last year, Zacks height has proved a valuable asset to the team. BOBBY HUNT Girard This is Bobby's first year to wear the maroon and white, but he has been one of the most dependable men on the team. With hustle and spirit to burn, he often spurred our team on to victory. A' fine team man, he is expected to do great things next yC3.I'. Guard MELVIN McFARLAND A fine ball handler, Melvin is the kind of boy who hates to make a mistake. He has a good eye for the basket, and we anticipate an even better season for him next year. GENE SHANEYFELT Forward Genes defense is his best asset, but his scoring was improving until injuries hit him. He should de- velop into a splendid man next year. DGNALD PORTER .Nlafmger for College Team! Our teams could not have got along without Por- ter Hc has been de endable and courteous and the . J p , teams and Coach Carr appreciate his great help.
