A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT Life has been portrayed in the Bible under quite a number of figures, but perhaps no one is more sig- nificant than that of a ship upon a tempestuous sea. This very naturally suggests the need of both a light- house and an anchor. Accordingly, the Class of 1957 has wisely chosen these as emblems of their noble aspira- tions for the future to give forth from their lives and ministry the light of truth which alone gives stability to stand fast in the midst of all the conflicting experiences one must inevitably encounter. A fair-weather faith is not sufficient to enable one to bear up under the strain of sorrow, disappointment, misunderstanding, sickness, and many other storms that may come before the voyage is finished and we safely reach the shores of that celestial land. Christians are to do all things without murmurings and disputings: that they may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom they shine as lights in the world, holding forth the word of life. Again, anchor ap- pears in only two places in the Word of God, but the connection in each instance is very instructive. In the midst of the fierce storm during the voyage of Paul to Rome, fearing the threatening dangers, they cast four anchors out ofthe ship, and wished for the day. The situation would have been tragic indeed if they had not been equipped with the anchors. However, it is far more serious in a spiritual sense when a child of God does not have that reserve necessary to enable him to hold on to the immovable foundation of truth when tossed to and fro by winds contrary to sound doctrine. In the parable of the builders, Jesus tells of the rain, floods and winds that beat vehemently against the soul, so we must have an anchor that will hold fast when the wild winds of temptation blow from many sources. And while there are other graces and qualities necessary to steadfastness, there is not anything more important than the Christian hope which we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, which takes hold within the heavenly veil, where Jesus our forerunner has entered for us. Nothing gives greater fortitude to stand fast when our frail bark is tossed by some tempest, than a living hope. In the midst of what might have been overwhelming trials, the Psalmist cried out, Why art thou cast down O my soul? Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise Him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. The apostle Paul wished for a very necessary thing, when he said, Now the God of hope fill you with all ioy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Personal knowledge of God, and vital union with Christ alone gives that living hope which is the only sure anchor ofthe soul. This hope is kept alive and vigorous only by habitual prayer and fellowship with Christ which guides one in the path of His will. One ship drives east and another drives west With the selfsame winds that blow. 'Tis the set of the sails And not the gales :iutlh Which tells us the way to go. Z Z' O fl. When our memories recount three golden years of scholastic attainment and cherished spiritual progress, we shall recall with admiration those who have so courage- ously given us this heritage, and stand as monuments of faith in a modern day. As we visualize the open doors and pursue with anticipation noble tasks that await us, truth impressed upon us at Holmes Bible College shall be the motivating force through the remainder of our lives, whether our achievements be great or small. The true value of our efforts in life will be attributed to our Alma Mater, to which we look with gratitude and thanksgiving, trusting that although our paths must part, divine unction will enable us to be true to our motto, Therefore Stand and at last anchor in that peaceful Harbor.
