LOUIS COWARD P ge Two si 0 FOREWORD J HEN time has more deeply etched upon our M hearts the true value of the principles which gave birth to thetheme, Live for Others, only then will it be possible for us to know the extent to which we are 'indebted to our Alma Mater and to all those who through understanding and devotion have been instru- mental in the molding of our characters and the building of our faith. Mindful of these things therefore, we, the staff and senior class, present this ninth vol- ume of the Holmes Echo with the fervent hope that the memories contained in each page will live on to become tomorrow's inspiration. nllllllllll DEDICATION REV. AND MRS. JOHN W. BELL ECAUSE of your genuine devotion and faithful service, your willingness to sacrifice for those entrusted to your care, we, the student body, with a profound feel- ing of gratitude, affectionately dedicate to you this ninth volume of the HoImes Echo . Pug THE PRESIDENT W1 l I fgm O I Ac DR. PAUL F. BEACHAM Though distinguished as an outstanding leader in religious education by men of all evangelical faiths, to those of us who know and love him it is his life of unselfish service and devotion ta God that has made our presi- dent a tower of integrity and true greatness, standing tall and majestic in the midst of the tragic ruins of the world's confused, deceived, and spiritually blinded masses. We consider ourselves exceedingly blessed to have come under the influence of the life and teaching of this example, not only of efficiency and fidelity but also of humility in the service of Christ's Church. WHEN TIME IS NO LUNG-ER The President's Message The title given to the following meditation is suggested by the statement of the apostle John, in connection with the second coming of Christ when He is revealed as standing with one foot upon the sea and the other upon the earth with His hand lifted to heaven, and will declare, There should be time no Ionger. This, of course, is an act of appropriation. The glorious Son of God will be actually redeeming the possession He purchased on the cross. Let us think with becoming solemnity of the dec- laration, that a consummation is absolutely certain. There is coming an end to the period of duration between the eternities, which we call TIME. It is, however, the short space allowed each individual that should concern us most, for the way we spend this will determine our eternal destiny of reward or retribution. During the days of His humanity, Christ taught by both precept and example the value of time. Said He, l must work the works of Him that sent me, while it is day. That is, while the time was given Him to accomplish the Father's will. It was redeeming the time that fitted Him to be the Savior of the world, Therefore, it is this alone that will enable us at the end of the way to say as He did, Father I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do. Then Paul, who regardless of his circumstances, was always fervent in spirit serving the Lord, could say at the end of his days, I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course. In the light of the truth, it is safe to say, that one needs all of his time to do his God-given task, and when it is all over hear Him say, Well done thou good and faithful servant. In fact, time is so precious that it is given to us only in moments, and one lost opportunity is gone for good. Christ tells us that He called a certain man to follow Him, but he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Humonly speaking this request was a reasonable one, and to be sure God would have us give due consideration to our loved ones and those about us. However, He would have us keep in mind that all circumstances should be subordinated, and all our time made subservient to the accomplish- ment of the will of God. The man in question, did not violently reject the call of Christ, but just lost his opportunity by not taking advantage of it at the time it was offered. Another said, Lord, I will follow Thee, but let me first go bid them farewell which are at home. There is not necessarily any wrong in telling people goodbye, but if the time required do this could be spent in a more profitable way, it can be damaging to the soul. If need be, one must be ready like Abraham to leave his kindred and posses- sions to follow the Lord of glory. Or as Moses who refused the wealth and honors of Egypt, and chose to suffer affliction with the people of God. Christ wept over the people of Jerusalem saying, lf thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! But now they are hid from thine eyes. He said to these very people, Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you, but they failed to give heed to His warning and lost the time of their opportunity. When the books of eternity are opened, may their record reveal that we took advantage of the opportunities afforded during our school days, and also that subsequent time was utilized for the glory of God and the salvation of immortal souls. In connection with the following words of Van Dyke, I would say that time means everything to one who would serve his generation according to the will of God: Time is too slow for those who wait, Too swift for those who fear, Too long for those who grieve, A Too short for those who rejoice. , But for those who live, Time is eternity. As we leave, our yester- days only memories of spiritual and scholastic achieve- ments, tomorrow is to us a vision of hope, for in this vision our aspirations are to be realized. The pursuit of success is not that for which we aspire, but the attain- ment of a spirit-filled life governed by the principles set forth in the heritage of H. B. C., neither is it the desire for worldly fame, but for the divine sanction of our lives as channels of truth. Though we go our separate ways, we shall remain united in resolute purpose to uphold TRUTH ABOVE GAIN as our motto forever. Librarian Our Library The library of Holmes Bible College is a great lamp of learning which is maintained primarily for the benefit of the faculty and student body. lt is a place of universal knowledge where one can enter its quiet portals and dig into its vast storehouse of wisdom and emerge a more enlightened and useful person. Our library is not only helpful to the student but to all causes which the student serves now or here- after. It promotes Christian education, the assimilation of historical information, interest in civic and gov- ernmental affairs as well as an interest in the psychological and sociological fields. It is a tool which may be used for innumerable good causes in the promotion of an enlightened civilization. Our Challenge is given to us by Paul in I Timothy 4:l2, who exhorts us to be an example of the believer in word,in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Our four organized prayer groups, which meet consecutively once a week, are a great aid in our spiritual life. Our theme song, Make Me a BIessing, beautifully describes the design of our society in the past, our purpose in the present, and shall remain our theme in our future promotion of Christ's Kingdom. ,, , OFFICERS-SECOND SEMESTER ., 44 l 1+ - - -f x.-We f ' 1 Louise CAVENAUGH, President YVONNE BROWN, Vice President MELVINE STEWART, Secretary-Treasurer MAXINE JONES, Prayer Chaplain PROGRAM COMMITTEE AUDREY POOLE RUTH DOWNING BARBARA MYERS syn, , fa I-4 'I Y 'I OFFICERS- FIRST SEMESTER EARL BEATTY, President EARL RECTOR, Vice President STEVE NORMAN, Secretary-Treasurer PROGRAM COMMITTEE JAMES ROBERTSON ROBERT CRAWFORD BYRNEL GRAHAM Beacham Fellowship Forum The Beacham Fellowship Forum was organized in the fall of I943, and was named in honor of our beloved president, Dr. Paul F. We 'TSB' have found that our monthly meetings promote a unity and a spirit of fellowship among the young men of the college in a way that no other activity does. Since its founding over half a century ago, its needs, in every sphere, have been supplied. Students, expected to pay no more than they could, have gone from this great institution to bless the world as ministers, missionaries, and Christian workers. The benefits they enjoyed while in this school have been, l think most of them will agree, fundamental to any success they achieved. The sacrifice of one man has meant the salvation of countless souls in dif- ferent parts of this vast world. These might never have heard about our Savior had N. J. Holmes not been willing to give up earthly wealth and fame in ex- change for eternal riches. Abundant progress characterizes Holmes Bible College. God has kept His hand upon the college year by year, step by step, and today, under the leader- ship of Dr. Paul F. Beacham, it stands as an edifice of TRUTH - the truth that makes us free. As we, the Class of l956, take our departure from this Bible College, there are mingled within our hearts gratitude and regret, happiness and remorse for things done and not done during our terms as students. Moreover, when we try to comprehend that which has been embedded in our hearts, and when we rec- ognize our responsibility to convey this TRUTH to those whom we shall serve, we stand in awe. To this treasured institution and her beloved president we leave this tribute: For what we may accomplish as servants of God, we acknowledge the ascendant influence of Holmes Bible College, a GREAT monument of faith in God.
