lgurpnnv The weakness in certain systems of modern education classified as Christian, is the tendency to keep on the surface and neglect the deeper issues and responsibilities of life. Emphasis is placed upon the idea that knowledge is power, without taking into account that it may be destructive power if it is void of the honesty and morality that has its root in genuine spirituality. True education does not put too much faith in mere knowl- edge. A person who is intellectual but not deep enough to be honest in the fear of God is a liability and not an asset to society. The policy of Holmes is and always has been to face any issue squarely without seeking a neutral or compromising position. To court the favor of two sides with opposite designs and obiectives is no more desirable in an institution than in an individual. Consistency requires us to be either for or against a thing. A silent indifference can become as destructive as open opposition. The purpose of Holmes from its birth until now has been to turn out a moral and spiritual product with light to illuminate the denseness and salt to penetrate and preserve the soundness of society.
