UNDERDOG VARSITY TEAM SURPRISES THE EXPERTS WITH UPSET VICTORIES Despite construction chaos on what had once been a football field, and with a smaller-than-usual turn-out of boys to work with, Coach Lou Birnbaum put to- gether a fighting team that won games it wasn7t supposed to win, and lost by narrow margins to top-rated opponents who were supposed to make mince-meat of the Crimson and White. Pre-season games with Sylmar and Las Vegas were anything but encourag- ing. Then came the first League clash with Palisades - a hard-fought contest that found Hollywood holding a slim 6-0 lead, thanks to Tolchin's 50-yard TD interception. The Sheiks held Pali scoreless until the last two minutes of the game when the Dolphins, who lin- ished second in the League, broke through to a TD and a conversion. The University powerhouse was held to a 7-7 tie in what was largely a defen- sive struggle for the Sheiks until the waning moments of play which brought a long TD pass from quarterback John Marino to end Tim Degani. Top-rated Hamilton faced an inspired Hollywood team that staged an offensive explosionf Sleight carried the ball over the line twice, with Zrake and Tolchin scoring a TD each to make the final score 27-0. Westchester, All-City champs, were slated to give us an unmerciful licking, but Francola, nailing down two TD,s on passes from Marino, gave Hollywood the distinction of scoring more points against the Comets than any other team in the League. The final scoreboard reading was 26-14, their favor. Fairfax ran full-tilt into a Sheik de- fense that completely demolished the Colonial's drive and led to a 13-O vic- tory for Hollywood. Last game of the season, and last high school game for seniors on the team, was with Venice. It was a 'cmusti' if Holly- wood was to finish high in Western League standings, and consequently, the game was played with tremendous drive. The result, thanks to fine teamwork plus memorable performances from Degani, Marino, Inadomi and Silvestre, was a 21-14 victory for the Sheiks. fy , V ,Qi f f it 5 1 , Q ' 5' 9 if Tim Degani H alfback C 0-Captain md vu, .lim Zrake Fullback DNN. ixx ' f A112 ' ,' 'W iff i r-' f ,97'QQ YV , ' W , t M , , ku 25, f' V, 4 ff 'Q I V I y ur 7 mg 1 , f y' ,f Q f f 1 1 f :W f' . ,W Bob Francola Fullback Co-Captain h I, V ,f fy I 4, ,ai ' , l 0. f fx, A f , , ,, 9 fffff Z ffu , ,, VXI' X j X 1 ! i h Halfback 2 N 1. At the beginning of the season only seventeen boys braved the construction chaos around the gym to report for prac- tice. Using his well-known powers of per- suasion, Coach Warner built up his squad to around thirty-five men who, catching some of the Warner fire, went on to beat Hamilton, University and Westchester, tie Fairfax, and sustain only two losses: to the beach boys of Palisades and Venice. Monte Richardson, starting as guard, converted to halfback and played with the kind of enthusiasm that inspires everyone. Quarterback Bruce Welton sparkplugged almost every game, while Van Moomjian proved a tough man, always ready to do the job. Moomjian moves up to Varsity next season, as does speedy Darryl Cromp- ton, both of whom looked good in spring practice. Rumor has it that Coach Warner is retir- ing as the Red Devils' coach, though he will still be with us at Hollywood. Tough Western League opposition discovered that the Sheiks had class and the will to win. Who will forget John lVIarino's two triples and a double at Palisades? Or the 4-3 extra-inning victory over arch-rival Fairfax? Or the gallant try of the Sheik nine to overtake Venice, second-ranking team in the City, in the initial round? Fans cheered the sudden jump-to-stardom of pitcher Art Johnson and outfielder Alan Sharkey, and cut loose at the defense of Sobel, Degani, Miller, Michel, Meyers and Hinman. The hitting performance of Marino, Ross, Weiss and Tolchin was outstanding. The golden era of the 20's, 30's and 40's seems to have returned. Debra Oliver and Ellen Maddow, to the final scene in which Malcolm, portrayed by Roger Kent, is hailed as King of Scot- land, the mood was one of mounting horror and tragedy. Mr. Addison Myers, who produced and directed the show with his usual skill, deserves special citation for the marvelous lighting effects which brought out the full beauty of the sets created by Mr. Dan Walker's stage design class, and for the memorable performances which he evoked from his actors. Riley Sauers, Macbeth, Joseph Culliton's Macduff, and Roger Kent's Malcolm were outstanding. as was Cenedee Cook's por- trayal of the anguished Lady Macbeth. Others deserving mention were Ed Lopez, Sebastian Lange, Sandy Wallace, Greg Mabry, Bob McGauhey and Nicole Selig- man.
