X m,,,.,L,,M!, My xx, Dr. Charles E. Sutclife Principal Mr. Raltlb Crawford Boys' Vice Principal Parent-Teacher Association Board of Directors, 1963-l964,' Mrs. Herman Martin, President, seated fourth from left. 8 Miss Bertha Standfast Girls' Vice-Principal A big school needs a tribute importantly It takes more than teachers, students, and a collection of buildings to make a school. Literally hundreds of people who are not often seen in the classroom are a vital part of Hollywood. Interested parents, banded together in the PTA organization, contribute to the school in a dozen different ways. Administrators de- termine educational policy. Clerks and secre- taries keep complicated records. Nurses and doctors minister to our physical well-being. Custodians, carpenters, painters, plumbers keep buildings in repair. Cafeteria workers provide for the inner man. All devote their time and their best efforts to making educa- tion possible. Responsible for keeping all this intricate machinery running is our Principal, Dr. Sut- cliffe, who, in his second year at the helm, has endeared himself to us by his friendliness, his concern for the welfare of all, and the enthusiasm with which he has sought to main- tain Hollywood's position as one of the very finest schools in the Los Angeles system. W ' ff?-X25 15' fQ.7if:E x I-at Mr. Frank Russell Head Counselor big staff, all con- to school's success Each year Miss Standfast, our Girls' Vice- Principal, demonstrates anew her dedication, not alone to the welfare of the girls of Holly- wood, but .to the entire school, to its great traditions, and to the maintainence of its high standards. Mr. Crawford combines good humor with efficiency in carrying out his many duties as Boys' Vice-Principal. Mr. Russell and his staff of counselors have the arduous job of advising each student- and there are nearly 2400 of us-as to the courses he should take to meet his individual needs and to fulfill graduation and college entrance requirements. Mr. Corian, our Registrar, is the man who counts us - not just once or twice a year, but virtually every day. He and his able staff check students in and out of school, keep track of absences and excuses, and prepare the statistical information which determines the size of the teaching staff and the amount of money the School District is entitled to receive from the State. f vw, ,f,,.,, if f. , ,,f,Wa,, , fW.,.,aWrfr J, Mee r f V3 'iaa' ' f ,. Allan Cutrow, Student Body President for the Fall Semester, gained fame as Super-Sheik, presided over an active and industrious Stu- dent Council, and upheld Hollywood's best traditions. Student Bod Oficers Fall Semester Treasurer Sue Reep, Girls' Vice-President Stephanie Keehn, Secretary Penny Eckert, and Boys' Vice- President Dann Boyd were elected to serve with Student Body President Allan Cutrow in the hotly contested election of june, 1963. On taking office in September, all showed the kind of initiative and imagination that makes Student Body Government a going concern. The impressive Installation Assembly held in january, 1964, marked the end of the Cutrow administration and the beginning of Dann Boyd's term of ojjqce as Student Body President. Over the years, the Student Body has consistently chosen out- standing leaders for its presidents and legislators. In both the Fall and Spring elections, the voters made their usual wise choices, for both Allan Cutrow, W'64 President, and Dann Boyd, S'64 President- together with the Student Councils over which they presided-proved themselves entirely worthy of the Hollywood tradition. Among the many duties of Student Body Presi- dents and Councils is the allocation each year of nearly 320,000 in Student Body funds to such activ- ities as the interscholastic athletic program, the H.H.S. News the Poinsettia, student welfare, Boys' and Girls' Leagues, and a dozen others. Sheik gridders bomb opposition, unexpected upsets deny us i Early in the season, Hollywood was picked to place high in Western League action, and our Sheik gridders set out to prove the prophets right. We fielded one of our heaviest and fastest teams of recent years, and both the line, led by Co-Captain Tony Fly, and the backfield, led by Co-Captain Dann Boyd, soon demonstrated that Coach- es Lou Birnbaum and Barry Brown had put together a mighty machine built to win games. High scores and ample yardage were the order of the day as we rolled over our first three opponents, only to be momentarily slowed by a non-league upset at South Pasadena. We picked up speed again and flattened Palisades and University in quick succession. Then, with only two games left to play and the coveted League title in plain sight, lowly Hamilton, never in the running, handed us an un- expected defeat. The next game-with Westchester- would decide the League championship. We ended fight- ing, but on the low end of a close score and in second place in the Western League. In our first game with Cleveland, which we took to the tune of 27-6, Don Presley led Sheik scoring with two TD's -while Tony Polito and Randy Gibeaut sparked a Hne defensive effort. Our 27-0 victory over Fairfax was sweet revenge for the shellacking suffered in '62. The scoring was divided 42 as in the Cleveland game, with a forward wall of Du- chesne, Hood, Tolcacher, Fly and Nalbandian continually opening gaping holes. The Sheik bombardment continued, with Venice taking a 26-6 pasting. Presley snagged a Gondolier pass and jumped four yards to pay dirt. Bud Bitticks hauled in a fifteen yard Mathe pass. And Boyd scampered six and twenty-five yards to cap the scoring. The shocker was South Pasadena, where we took the wrong end of a 20-6 score, but where Shane Mathe blossomed as a passer and Art Carranza as a defensive back. Back in stride, the Sheiks rolled over Pali 55-13. Led by Boyd's four TD's the entire team showed its real po- tential. Gibeaut, Duchesne, Polito and Sjostrom were outstanding on defense, while Mosher and Bitticks sparked the offense. The Sheiks again exploded, bombing Uni 34-20. Boyd with two TD's, Bitticks, Presley and Mosher with one each, tallied for the unstoppable Crimson and White. Our season record was upped to 5-1 as we went on to what many considered a tune-up game with Hamilton before playing Westchester. Hamilton, however, had other ideas and stunned Hol- lywood 33-9. The Sheiks could do nothing right, fumbling eight times and throwing two interceptions. The defense, :'4 Eli' VL? E'l' E'E ETC F E E ,ip t - t 'fam .gf ..., . ,J P t Varsity Football. Row 1: B. League championship led by Duchesne and Fly, saw plenty of action in this heartbreaker The Sheiks beat Westchester's Comets in all depart- ments, except where it counts-the scoring column. Ran- sacking a defense which had allowed opponents an average of minus eleven yards per game, Hollywood rolled up 276 total yards. But once again, fumbles and key interceptions ruined a gallant bid to tie for first place in Western League play. And so ended the '63 football season. But the final gun actually signaled the start of the '64 stanza. Forbidden by League rules to practice in the Spring semester, our return- ing Varsity players continued to work out until after Christmas vacation, preparing to give us more thrills and fine playing when September rolls around again. The '63 season found veteran Dann Boyd, who leaves us in June, leading the entire city in scoring. Graduating Little Donn Presley, new to Hollywood, proved an in- valuable player. The fine arm of Shane Mathe will be missed next season, as will the savvy of Tony Fly who headed our huge defensive line, largest in the city. But good material is coming up, and next year-who knows? Except that the two Mr. B's - Birnbaum and Brown - can always be counted on to develop available talent to the highest pitch of perfection possible. The first game of the season brought a staggering 46- 0 loss to Cleveland, but the Devils bounced back to win three in a row. Fairfax and South Pasadena were the first to fall. Then came Venice, un- defeated and formidable League champs. At the last possible minute, Hollywood came from behind and, with a pass from Welton to Zavad, made the TD which drowned the Gondoliers 18-13. Throughout the season, the boys played a good brand of football, but our opponents did sufficiently better to cop the four remaining games in the schedule. Deserving mention for their fine per- formances are Moon, Welton, Ingles- be, Hartleben, Naimy, Valdez and Chock. Victory- or defeat-in Cross Country is based on the total per- formance of each of the first five members of the team. Hence there is not the opportunity, as in other team sports, for a handful of ex- ceptionally iine players to support a whole team, or for a group of well-drilled lesser ath- letes to perform as one super-unit. Made up largely of unseasoned newcomers, the Varsity found itself outclassed in an ex- ceptionally strong League, but many fine in- dividual performances were turned in. john Linder, running Cross Country for the first time, wound up as the number one man on the team, while the old reliable Gordon Keller easily kept his number two spot. The JV and Tenth Grade teams made a creditable showing, and will furnish Coach joe Klein- bauer with excellent material for next season's competition. 52 5 E s z sr 'S' Q, - Q l f' Q in l ' in -, ' f.. 5 K - . The Varsity won its first two practice games, then found itself in the basement and, despite tremendous effort to extricate itself, couldnlt locate the way back to the surface again. Many of the scores were close, and time and again hopes were revived, but the final gun al- ways found us on the low end of the tally. None of the boys ever gave up and many fine individual performances were turned in. After that, the boys settled down to less spectacular performances, due in part to early season injuries that put some of our best men on the bench. Our only other victory, as of the time the Poinsettia went to press, was against St. john Vianney, a practice meet. While losses to Venice, Pali- sades and University were chalked up, only the Uni score was really lop-sided. Don Presley, who put on such a fine per- formance on the football field, was a triple winner against Fairfax in high jump, long 'hun Don Presley makes a first place long 6 xy egin season with an easy ong-time rival, Fairfax jump, and hurdles. He tied the school rec- ord of 6' 2 in the high jump at the Pali meet, and is a serious contender for the honor of breaking the League record. Brian Reed has been our top man in the 880, with Mike Spar taking the honors in the 100. Pole vaulter Gordon Keller was beaten only once in League play. In the Bee division, Gerd Kusch has proved himself an outstanding 100 yd. man, while Bill Lee has distinguished himself in the long jump. An all-around man in the Cee division has been Dave Lovatto. Baseball jinx put to rout as Shieks defeat League-leading Westchester Hollywood's baseball jinx began to lift last sea- son. And now it seems to be definitely a thing of the past- even though the Varsity lost the services of Dann Boyd, due to an injury, in the first game. The Varsity nine lost four of its League games by only one run, and to make up for these heartbreak- ers, Hollywood took the measure of mighty West- chester, strongest team in the League and acknowl- edged leader of the pack. We brought Westchester down to defeat by a 5-1 score, thanks, in part, to the solid pitching performance of Bill Dinsmore. With several games yet to be played as the Poin- settia goes to press, and with the possibility of Boyd's return to his short-stop position, the future looks anything but gloomy. The JV baseball outfit turned out to be a strong aggregation which could take on an experienced Fair- fax team and beat them, not once, but twice. As the Poinsettia went to press, the JV's had to admit to losses to Pali, Westchester, Uni and Hamilton, but Coach Lundy, at the midpoint of the season, was hopeful for the future. Mr. Lundy's choices for out- standing players were Bob Francola at lst base, Larry Weiss on 2nd, Forgues at the catchers stand, and Miller at short-stop. At mid-season, Pete Michel was moved up to Varsity, which points up the fact that the JV squad, composed entirely of 10th and 11th graders, has plenty of material on which to build a strong Varsity next year. The Poinsettia's prediction that the baseball jinx is over is coming true. At the half-way mark in the season, it looked as if the big meet would be the one with Palisades, and further- more, it looked as if the winner of that encounter would walk off with the League championship. Swimming honors are no new experience for Hollywood. Coach Ed Warneris teams won the City Championship six times in a' row, starting in 1952, and between that date and 1964, we have taken out League title nine times. Coach Lou Birnbaum Hollywood Racqueteers in fair shape at midpoint, coach hopeful team will reach 3rd or 4th in city As last year's Poinsettia went to press, Hollywood's tennis stars were confidently expecting the Western League championship and a crack at All-City honors. The results were not quite up to expectations, but third place in the entire city is not to be belittled. As the 1964 competition begins, Hollywood is put- ting an excellent and seasoned team into the field- despite the loss of three of our finest players via the cap-and-gown graduation route. Hollywood's number one man, Tony Esquiro, is rated 'seventh on the All- City team. Our number two boy is an 11th grader, George Repchinsky. Number three is newcomer Ron- ald Papell who has proved himself an invaluable player. Veteran Frank Lowe ranks number four, and not far behind him is the old reliable Orestes Resty Bevilaqua. Four excellent doubles teams are on deck this year: Jim York and Roger Goldman, Bill Heintz and Don Wittenberg, Scott Garvin and Svarre Staursett, and Zoltan Csomoss and Starr Kilian. All promise to bring Hollywood its share of victories. At midpoint of the season, just as the Poinsettia goes to the printers, we have won half of the games played. Coach Lou Birnbaum expects matters to im- prove sufliciently for Hollywood to take a third or fourth place in the City. Resty Bevilaqua Tennis Team. The Class of Winter ,64 could barely top the hundred mark, but lack of numbers could stop them not at all. To Lloyd Schwartz, a dynamic Class President, must go much of the credit for convincing the February graduates that they could carry out a full program of activities-and then take on the extra burden of arrangements for the Time Capsule, containing artifacts of our era, which was buried in front of the Admin- istration Building and which is slated to be unearthed at Hollywood's centennial celebration in the year 2004 Winter '64 Ephebians, selected by their classmates and the faculty on the basis of scholarship, character and leadership were Allan Cutrow, Barbara Masson and Pat- ricia Nolan. Bill Lee, as Class President--aided by enthusiastic officers and a hard-working Council-did an outstanding job of di- recting all the traditional class activities- picnic, prom, grad night, Aloha lunch- eon-and then went on to break new ground by proposing that the Class Gift be a selection of books for the Library- a suggestion that brought hosannas from the faculty.
