The Annual Staff sincerely hopes that this forty- seventh edition of the POINSET- TIA will always be a reminder to the reader of happy, exciting and productive days. A Tribute to the man who has signed more report cards than any other tea- cher at Hollywood High Schoolg to the athletic coach who has been an inspiriation to Holly- wood's boys and girls since the roaring twenties. In 1916, Mr. Merril Bailey was graduated from high school in a small Iowa town, after serving in the armed forces of the United States during World War I, he entered the teaching profession and came to Hollywood in 1923. A I record-holder himself, Mr. Bailey has transmitted his skill and knowledge to athletes in vir- tually every sport. During his career of almost forty years, Mr. Bailey has produced great performers: champions like Lee Barnes, Olympic title-holder in pole vault and, more recently, Steve Mathews and the Farlow twins. Mr. Baileyis paramount aim has been to help everyone. We can truly say of him that he has shown us how to Achieve the Honorable. 7 if A .W N, ,,,.,.0U f J' 'AW J -, !fk.yf,.,-wwmgs X ,f ,. The responsi- bilities imposed upon them by law are staggering enough. More important is the moral responsi- bility to provide educational leadership. This responsibility the administrators of Hollywood High School have never shirked. In one short year, Mr. Hamerman has brought us a new sense of purpose and direction, Miss Standfast and Mr. Crawford have redoubled their efforts to show us what it truly means to Achieve the Honorable. MISS BERTHA STANDFAST MR. RALPH CRAWFORD Girls' Vice-principal Boys' Vice-principal MR ARTHUR TANNER MR. FRANK RUSSELL Registrar Head Counselor MR. SAM HAMERMAN Principal NOT TO BE FORGOTTEN . . . Principal, Vice-principals, teachers and students would be hard put to it to func- tion in their respective spheres were it not for that large group of conscientious men and women who attend to the thousand and one details involved in the running of a large metropolitan high school. And so, a grateful saluate to our school secretary, Miss Lucy Pastore, to Mrs. Vivian Bryden, Mrs. Lucille Clements, Mrs. Lillian Fel- lows, Miss Helene Homuth, Mrs. Grace Jacklin, Miss Annie Kendrick and Mrs. Margaret Taylor . . . To our school nurse, Miss Shirley Merkling . . . To Mr. Herman Smith and his loyal workers in the cafe- teria . . . And far from last, to Mr. Paul Parkinson, head custodian, and his expert crew . . . Language In our rapidly shrinking world the need for proficiency in a language other than one's native tongue becomes ever more imperative. Students at Hollywood may pursue, through the eighth semester level, courses in Latin, French, German and Spanish. These are expertly taught by Mrs. Padbury, Mrs. Raymond, top left, Mrs. Gagan and Mr. Smith, bottom left, and by the camera-shy Mrs. Speicher, Mrs. Prest and Mr. Gottlieb. Business For those students who expect to go into the world of business, Hollywood offers a strong curriculum in Business Education, taught by experts in their fields: Miss Nishioaka, Mr. Corian and Miss Winkler, whose pictures appear on the right, and Mrs. Kent. Driver Education Under' State Law, Driver Education is a graduation requirement in all California high schools. Upholding the law and, perhaps more impor- tant, helping to make our streets and highways safer, are Mr. Long and Mr. Maryott, smiling at you from the right. Hornernaking Shakespeare declared that of earthly goods, the best is a good wife. Under the guidance of Mrs. Baird, Mrs. 6 Van Sickle and Miss Bird, pictured at the right, the girls of Hollywood should find no difiiculty in becom- ing best in the all-important field of Homemaking. Q' 51 f Qyff jeff Cobb, Student Body President Fall Semester inter, 196 Nineteen sixty-two will be remembered as a year of change and innovation. Jeff Cobb, taking office as Student Body President in September, initiated a long over-due revision of the Student Body Constitution. It was soon clear that if Hollywood was to be provided with a modern program of student participation in school government, a wholly new constitution would have to be written. In this arduous task, Jeff received the enthusiastic support of the Leadership Class over which he presided. By semesteris end a first draft of the new constitution had been readied for consideration by the incoming Leadership group. At semester's end, too, Leader- ship learned that it was about to lose its advisor of many years, Mr. Willard Hansen who, shortly after the beginning of the Spring semester, left Hollywood for a position with the Youth Services branch of the Los Angeles City Schools. .HW Jeanne Clausen, Student Body Vice-President, Mike Student Council members meet in the Library to prepare registration ma- terials. French, Treasurer, Kris jordan, Secretary. Summer, 1962 President Bob Henricks took ofiice at the end of January, 1962, and at once justified the confidence placed in him by the student body. Working closely with Mr. Hamerman and the new Leadership Advisor, Mr. David Hubbard, Bob be- gan the difficult job of implementing the new Constitution. Leadership Class found itself transformed into a Student Council holding daily sessions. A Student Assembly, acting in an advisory capacity to the Council, was created. Each member of the Council found himself charged with new responsibilities as each became the Director of a specific area of activity: publicity, school spirit, social activities, as- semblies, athletics and the like. Hard work and real enthusi- asm got the transformation under way. If Rome was not built in a day, neither is a student body government reor- ganized in a semester. But the pioneers of 1962 have pro- vided a solid foundation for the future. In 1962 new life was infused into the Boys' League which, technically at least, counts every boy in school as a member. Started many years ago in emulation of the successful Girls' League, the boys' organi- zation has led a checkered career, sometimes flying high, but more often grounded. Un- der jim Hoyland the motors began to be revved up, and during the second semester, with David Brubaker as President, the League took off once more and now shows promise of staying aloft for a long time to come. The Leaguels major project this year has been the organization of noontime volley- ball competition which, it is hoped, will become a permanent and popular activity. Girls' League, formed many years ago to fur- ther the interests of the feminine half of the student body, is an organization of many committees and much activity. Its semi-annual Sign-up Day sees a very large number of girls enrolling in its Red Cross, Christmas Work and other committees devoted to lend- ing a helping hand. Each year hundreds of stockings are filled for the children who attend Hollywood's famous Christmas Party. Girls take an ac- tive interest in Children's Hospital where Hollywood maintains a bed from the pro- ceeds of the yearly apple sale. In short, wherever there is a need, you will find Girls' League ready to do the job. Girls' League GIRLS' LEAGUE OFFICERS, Fall Semester. Sports Nights, held every four weeks or so on Fridays, attract many Hollywood stu- dents. Sometimes the evening is given over to ping-pong, volleyball and a bit of danc- ing to records - punctuated, of course, by time out for a Coke or Pepsi. A de- parture from the usual Sports Night was the Valentine Twist, sponsored by the Senior Class and the Student Council. On the left Gary Rucker and jim Elliott watch an unidentified hero risk his neck to dec- orate the gym for the affair, while on the right Jeannette Zink and Tudor Williams demonstrate correct form in the modern ver- sion of the minuet. Assemblies Assemblies, held at frequent intervals, are an im- portant feature of Hollywood life. Some are tra- ditional in form and content, others a decided de- parture from the usual. A case in point was the H-Club-sponsored Tennis Demonstration held in the gym in February. The entire student body thrilled to an exciting doubles match played by internationally famous net champs, including the unforgettable Pancho Segura of the two-handed grip. First held more than forty years ago, our traditional children's Christmas Party has undergone many changes in form, but its original idea remains the same: to bring joy to others at the Holiday Season. Both the party and the bed which we maintain at Childrens' Hospital are financed by the Fall Apple Sale. During a six-week campaign, Leadership Class persuaded the Student Body to buy over 18,000 apples! The party began when Miss Fohl's Drill Team and Mr. Ward's Marching Band escorted 6. Save me a seatll' 9. The entire cast takes a bow. the children from their buses to the auditorium. There the exceptional talents of Miss Pointer's dancers were displayed against beautiful sets designed and built under Mr. Bauer's supervision. Orchestra and vocal groups, directed by Mr. Briedenthal and Mr. Hofrichter, contributed sparkling music, while backstage and unseen, Mr. Ashdon's Stage Crew manipulated lights and scenery. Everyone at Hollywood played a part in making this an event which our young guests will long remember. 7. When does the show start? u. an-. ..........-,. ..,..D- .. ...,,, . I J 10. Football Football Fflotball F otball THE CLEVELAND GAME,first of the season, started as a rout with Hollywood on top. A tough Cleveland de- fense soon ended hopes for a walk-over, but we kept our 6-0 lead until 33 seconds before the final shot when Cleveland scored and converted. Guard Lars Tilgman showed great promise in this game, filling in for the in- jured Steve Stuart. IN THE HAMILTON game we were held to 12 points during the first three quarters, but a Sheik explosion, led by fullback Roger Kerr, gave us 19 additional points in the final quarter for a 31-7 win. Bob Henricks was a standout both on offense and defense. WESTCHESTER WAS NEXT, and in this one Reardon picked off a pass on the opponent's 30-yard line, returned it to the 5 where, four plays later, Kerr smashed over for Hollywood's lone touchdown. After that, Westchester, racked up the remainder of its 19 point total. Tenth grader Bob Poland was an alert defensive halfback. WITH THE FAIRFAX game, Hollywood came back with a better brand of ball. Kerr and Kit Wilkins turned in stellar performances with outstanding assists from linesmen Norm Ziff, Mike Dendrinos and joel Gerst, while Joel Rosenbaum did an excellent job at guard. The result: 13-0, our favor. IN THE VENICE game a spectacular opening drive gave us an early score, but Venice struck back twice before half-time. In Act II, a bad Venice punt enabled Holly- wood to march 40 yards in five plays, with Kerr going the last 8 yards. Highlight of the drive was a 23-yard pass play from Bruce Tupper to Bob Newbery. And halfback John Berry made a game-saving tackle in the last seconds. THE BANNING POWERHOUSE, according to the EX- perts, was set to walk over us. But the game turned out to be a cliff-hanger all the way. An 80-yard drive follow- ing the initial kickoff gave us the first score. Banning responded with three TDs, but in the final 12 seconds of the first half, Newbery passed 35 yards to Foster for the second Sheik score. Banning made the score 25-24 in their favor, but we marched to their 20-yard line and appeared ready to score when Banning inter- cepted a pass in their end zone and pushed ahead 80 yards to score, with 16 seconds left in the game. NEWLY ORGANIZED PALISADES High School, still minus a 12th grade, suffered a crushing defeat when we played our entire 44-man traveling squad against them and ran wild to a 47-6 score. THE UNIVERSITY GAME saw Hollywood nail down second place in the Western League with a 27-6 win. High spots of the game were a 66-yard march in 15 plays, with Newbery scoring from the 2-yard line, and an interception by Kerr who sped untouched to paydirt. In this game, tackle Richard Folmer helped contain a rough Uni line, while Brian Brophy led Ho1Iywood's halfbacks with a 4.8 average. Although Hami was a heavy favorite, we led all the way before the Yanks tied the score and forced the game into overtime. As the season progressed, the Redshirts played outstanding ball against Fairfax, Westchester and League champ Univer- sity. In the Uni fracas we took an early lead that was soon erased, but we stayed right with them until the final moments of the fourth quarter when Uni broke the game wide open. It was some con- solation to hear Uni coach Jerry Marvin say that we played a better game against his powerhouse than any other team in the Western League. The Westchester game was played on a gloomy, rainy day, with results to match as the Comets piled up an early lead which our Redshirts were unable to over- come. Our five cagers, meeting Banning before a large Alumni Day crowd, played one of the most exciting games of the season as the shooting of Vic Katch and Gary Ruc- ker kept the score close until near the end of the last quarter when the Pilots spurted into the lead and kept it. Art Patterson, who broke an ankle in the San Pedro game, was sorely missed in the Banning scrap. The Redshirts were led by All-Leaguer and top scorer Vic Katch, forward Bill Baltz, jump-shot artist Gary Rucker, top rebounder Doug Martin and guard Aff Patterson. At the opening meet of the track season, it was evident that there had been considerable improvement in the Western League and that competition would be keener than ever. All League teams suffered a handicap, how- ever, by having to forego practice meets. Hollywood's Varsity Team, with most of last year's let- termen having graduated, stands small and relatively inexperienced, and a few Bees had to be moved up to complete the squad. As we go to press, the Varsity lost to a strong Hamilton aggregation and won out over an average Fairfax squad. The outlook for our Bee and Cee teams is more cheerful. The Cees are expected to take League and, unless all the prognostications are wrong, the Bees should likewise make a strong showing. As a result, our final standing in the League was somewhere in the sub-basement. Even so, we can derive some consolation from the fact that our loss to Westchester, the League champs, did not come until the final inning, and that, thanks to Bob Smith's tremendous pitching performance, we forced Fairfax into thirteen innings. Other stand- outs beside Bob were Dennis Flynn, hard-hitting second baseman, Terry Gerard at first base, and Steve Friedman in the outfield. Shown above in Row 1: B. Tupper, D. Murray, A. Erikson, B. A school is a world in miniature, and like the larger world of which it is a part, it can per- haps be sure of only one thing-change. On other pages we have recorded the changes in the student population of our world-two graduating classes. Here we pause to bid farewell to the teachers who have left us or will soon do so. Starting at nine O'clock and reading clockwise, we have Mr. Keaveney, of the Business Education department who, early in the Fall semester was recalled into the service. Next Mr. Hansen, long time advisor to the lead- ership Class, who accepted a position with the Youth Services division of the City Schools. Mr. Breidenthal, former head of the Music Department, resigned at the end of January to devote himself to writing. Mr. DeLand, public speaking teacher, is in New York. Mrs. Him- bert and Miss McGarry, both of the English Department, retired at the end of the Fall Semester. Mr. Ashdon, printing instructor and grand panjandrum of the stage, is retiring in June, as is Mr. Bailey to whom this book is dedicated. To all of them we say thank you for their efforts on our behalf, and to all we wish Godspeed and long life. . . . and a Warm welcome Not all the freshmen are students. Here we pause to welcome to our ranks the capable new teachers who have come to us with the Spring Semester. Starting in the lower right- hand corner and reading clockwise, let,s say hello,' to Mrs. Lerner who has joined the Busi- ness Education Department. Miss Hironaka comes to us from Hawaii, our newest state, to add an Island touch to the English Department. Mrs. Gutwillig began her teaching at Bell High School and now joins the English Department, as does Mrs. Gant, formerly of Santa Monica, who is in charge of our speech activities.
