Holly's basketball team emerged from the 1952-53 season with a record of six victories and nine losses. Although this record doesn't look outstanding, it is the best record posted by a Holly team in several years and includes two triumphs that were especially important. The first came when Keego Harbor, always a good basketball team, invaded Holly in the second game of the season. The Bronchos were at a disadvantage in height as in many of their games and Keego held the lead during most of the game. Coach Chet Aubuchon's cagers never gave up though, and in the fourth quarter Bob Kelly's rebound with Earl Garner's three last minute insurance free throws gave Holly the 59-55 win. The Bronchos' other big victory came after Christmas vacation in another home game. The Holly five met Fenton and led all the way but after three Bronchos fouled out in the fourth period, Fenton almost overcame them. The Bronchos pulled the game out of the fire with a two minute game winning stall. Holly met Fenton again in the semi-finals ofthe district tournament at Grand Blanc after drawing a bye in the opening round. The Bronchos led all the first half, lost the lead during the third period, and then came from behind to tie the game up with 8 seconds left. Fenton got a last second free throw to win the game 42-41 and end Holly's basketball season. The Holly quintet proved its ability to play good basketball several times during the season but the team never really caught fire. This inability to win was partially due to a lack of height. Aubuchon loses five seniors this year. Jack Gmelich's slot will be a tough one to fill. Gmelich's 207 points easily topped team scoring and his 6 foot 'I inch frame was very useful on the backboards. Bill Wagoner gained a reputation for accuracy on two-hand long shots. Wagoner was also known as a fierce competitor. Bob Kelly was one of the coolest yet hardest working men on the court. Kelly held the Holly attack together under pressure and was fine at rebounding. Bill Kramer saw only limited ac- tion, but did well when called upon. Don Dumas missed several weeks of the season but was a hard worker. Holly should put a good team on the court next year. Returning will be Jerry Hunter and Earl Garner from this year's starting five along with Dick Smith, Quentin Rundell, .lack Felch, Ralph Wells, and Bob Van Auken, all of whom saw action this season.
