We are now in high school. Even Though we have a new building we Tind ThaT we do noT have adequaTe equip- menT To have a modern school. l3IrsT among The Things we need are some new courses such as home econo- mics, a course in agriculTure or mech- anics and a beTTer business course Than is available aT The presenT Time. This would beTTer TiT The ones who can'T aT- Tord To go To college, and have To earn a living righT away. This would help Them To obTain a much beTTer iob. l-lollis has been Taking an acTive parT in sporTs Tor a good many years. Up unTil lasT year all we had in The way oT sporTs equipmenT were horseshoe piTs and ping-pong Tables. We didn'T even have These unTil The new high school was builT. l.asT year we Tinally succeed- ed in geTTing a baseball diamond, and earned money Tor girls baskeTball suiTs and boys baseball uniTorms. We sTill have no place To pracTice baskeTball and would noT be able To Take parT in This sporT iT iT were noT Tor The kindness oT anoTher Town. NexT is The urgenT need Tor a music Teacher. WiThouT one iT cuTs oTT a large amounT oT our income which we need To keep The school going. We can'T possibly mainTain our band and puT on opereTTas wiThouT some help. We spenT a greaT deal oT money Tor 'nusical in- sTrumenTs, 'Thinking iT a good invesTmenT. lT will be money wasTed wiThouT a band. l'm noT saying ThaT iT is impossible To geT along wiThouT These Things because we can and have, buT wiThouT These Things iT puTs us way behind oTher Towns oT The same size and does noT live up To The ideals oT The UniTed STaTes. IT says ThaT we are all born equal and have an equal chance. Do you, our parenTs and Triends, all good ciTizens. Think ThaT we have These equal chances? In iT we receive The viTamins and minerals ThaT assure us oT good eyesighT, good sTrong bodies and a clear mind. IT we have proper Tood, and dieTiTians say ThaT The average pupil who carries a cold lunch To school does noT have The Tood he needs, many oT us know ourselves ThaT iT we were where we could enjoy' a balanced meal every day, we would be more resisTanT To disease, have more oT whaT we call PEP and in reTurn geT a beTTer mark Than we do now in school. For proper Tood is whaT snaps us ouT oT ThaT lazy Teeling ThaT never did geT us anywhere. To be sure, we would all enioy a gym- nasium. There is no quesTion abouT ThaT. We would enjoy many sp-orTs ThaT we do noT have in our school aT The pre- senT Time. Many have nof even explored fhe pos- sible fields, while ofhers have, buf can'f seem fo .decide which one fo enler. There are sfill ofhers who do nof realize fhe imporfance of if. Many fields offer opporfunifies in which a person may enfer and have a very promising career. Buf, in choosing, a person should consider nof only fhe advanfages buf fhe disadvanfages as well. They should fhink nol' only of financial refurns buf also wh-efher or nof fhe work will really hold fheir inferesfg and whefher or nof fhey are capable of doing if successfully. A good facfor fo consider in choos- ing, is fhe choice of a field which is nof over-crowded, buf rafher encour- ages new employmenf insfead. This should be clone for one's own benefif and for fhe benefif of ofhers. Two ex- amples of fhese fypes of fields are feaching and nursing. Bofh are in greaf demand and fhe schools are easier fo gef info because fhey are nof over- crowded. Music is anofher enjoyable field in which fo enfer: buf if is nof of much service as feaching and nursing, alfhough one may gel' a lof of personal enioy- menf from music. There is a saying aloouf music which is very frufhful and full of meaning, Music cannof hurf. Sunshine can burn you, food can poison you, words can condemn you, picfures can insull' you: music cannof punish- Only bless. lf a person is in doubf abouf +his field and would like fo know a loif more of whaf if is like, fhere are a few Summer music camps which hold ses- sions of Two weeks or a monfh. l'lere one is able fo learn whaf if's like fo plan concerfs wifh ofher young people and find fheir opinions abouf music. lf is very educafional as well as a lol' of fun. One of fhe greafesf fhings neglecfed in l-lollis is fhe schools. Times have changed since you, our parenfs and friends, were in school. Whaf you had when you were young is now inade- quafe. Things have become more mod- ernized. l-lollis schools are nof up fo clafe. l-lere, in fhis fown, are sfill found fhe one and fwo room school houses. These small schools would nof be as bad if fhey had modern equipmenf. The schools we affended before high school had no lighfs, running wafer, or screens. In order fo gef fhese fhings we had fo gef ouf and earn fhe money ourselves, The fown couldn'l' gef These fhings for us because fhe people did nof feel fhaf fhey could afford fo have fheir faxes raised.

Who would say ThaT iT would be beTTer To ride To school in a bus and exercise in a heaTed gymnasium? BUT ThaT is one OT The reasons ThaT ciTy pupils need a gym. NexT we musT Think oT The whole Thing in view oT sporTsmai.ship. Games oT baseball, baskerball, and all oTher evenTs, such as The checker conTesT and speaking conTesTs are The very besT oT characTer building and comradeship re- quiremenTs. How many oT These do we have To geT along wiThouT? To be sure we are handicapped wiThouT a gym, buT These sporTs are noT enTirely ouT ol: The picTure, are They? Could we noT develop comradeship To some exTenT in a caTeTeria where we could enjoy each oTher's company while eaTing a good meal? And a good aTh- leTe musT have a good Tood supply iT he is To become a healThy player. We would noT have To sacriTice a Thing ThaT we have now if we did noT have a gym, buT leT me call To your aTTenTion The many beneTiTs a caTeTeria would bring To all oT us. Every pupil in The school would geT a balanced meal every day-and iT is noT a Talse sTaTemenT when l say ThaT many oT our parenTs are noT able. Tinan- cially or oTherwise, To guaranTee us such a meal when iT musT be puT inTo a lunch box To be eaTen cold, day aTTer day. Those pupils ThaT Travel a long dis- Tance would have Time To enioy a caTe- Teria when They would noT be able To . ,- spare The Time To use a gym. Many of us have Things To do aT home ThaT would keep us from enioying The gym as much as Those who are more TorTunaTe. And The cosT oT This would also have To be considered. There are Taxpayers in This Town ThaT have a hard job To meeT Their Tax bills when Tax paying Time comes. Every- Thing cosTs so much more Than ever be- Tore, The common ciTizen of The Town would much raTher see addiTional money raised and Teel ThaT his Tamily was re- ceiving beneTiTs To Their healTh and so was his neighbor's Tamily, Than To pay Those addiTional Tunds, ThaT he has worked so hard To geT, To build a gym ThaT only a porTion ol: sTudenTs would have an opporTuniTy To enioy.
