The class hisTory hasn'T ended' y-e-T Tor we'll srill be mak- ing hisTory TiTTy years Trom now. Junior Class On SepTember 7, I948 we reTurned To school To begin our Third year. Our class is The IargesT in The school, num- bering TwenTy lasT Tall. EvereTT Jones IeTT our class in January, so we now have nineTeen. We were well represenTed in sporTs wiTh RoberT SouThwick, Reginald Gro- der, Mel Bradbury, Jocky Jones, Bruce Young, and Donald Dodge in boTh gcbforiaf On Consolidation As lhe lopic ol consolidalion has been on lhe lips ol lhe cilizens ol Hollis lor some lime, il seems only lilling lhal an edilorial should deal wilh lhal subiecl, consolidalion, Perhaps il would help lo- menlion some ol lhe advanlages and disadvan- lages ol consolidalion. When lwo or more lowns combine lo have one cenlral high school, lhe cosl ol operaling would be divided accord- ing lo lhe enrollmenl ol each lown, lhus lhe school having lhe largesl number ol pupils would, ol course, pay more. ll our schools were consolidaled, we would be able lo hire leachers who were beller lrained lor each subiecl laughl, lhus giving lhe sludenls a much beller loundalion in each subiecl. As il is now we cannol have lyping and shorlhand in our high school, and sludenls who wanl lo have a business lraining, have lo go lo a college lo oblain lhe necessary lraining lo work in lhe business world. A larger, beller equipped school would eliminale lhis. ll we had more leachers lhe exlra aclivilies could be divided among lhem so lhal one leacher would nol be laking lime lrom regular sub- iecls lo coach various aclivilies lhrough lhe year, such as public speak- ing, dramas, and coaching alhlelics. The grammar schools 'ol Hollis would benelil lrom lhis plan because lhe pre- senl high school could easily be remod- eled lo accommodale lhe presenl en- rollmenl ol lhe elemenlary schools. This would make il much easier lor our mu- sic inslruclor because he would nol have lo spend a lhird ol his lime on lhe rough roads going lrom one school lo anolher. Now lel us lurn lo lhe disadvanlages. ln a large school each sludenl does nol have lhe individual allenlion as received in a smaller school, because ollen lhe ones who are nol so lorcelul are lhe ones who receive very lillle nolice and lhere is less chance lor lhe sludenl who is nol so well known lo gel inlo lhe aclivilies. ln a large school lhere is also addi- lional accidenl and lire hazard. ll is much easier lo aid a small group ol children lo salely, lhan il would be lo help a large group. A disadvanlage which should be men- lioned in regard lo consolidalion ol ele- menlary schools is lhe lacl lhal small boys and girls ol lirsl grade age would be away lrom lheir molhers loo long il lhey had lo be lransporled lo a cen- lral school. Ollen limes lhe disadvanlages oul- weigh lhe advanlages, so il is a subjecl which should be very carelully consid- ered belore any draslic sleps are laken. Allhough my days al l-lollis l-ligh School are nearing lheir end, l slill would like lo see l-lollis l-Iigh prosper, and lhus enable lhe sludenls lo enioy lhe advanlages lhal l have nol had. Virginia W. lllingworlh '49 Choosing A Career Choosing a career is one ol lhe mosl imporlanl sleps in a person's lile. Every boy and girl when in school should have al leasl an idea as lo whal he wanls lo do when he linishes high school. Many young people know even belore lhey enler, and lhey plan ahead wilh eager- ness. Today in high schools lhere are many boys and girls who haven'l even a vague idea as lo whal lheir career will be. Many have nof even explored fhe pos- sible fields, while ofhers have, buf can'f seem fo .decide which one fo enler. There are sfill ofhers who do nof realize fhe imporfance of if. Many fields offer opporfunifies in which a person may enfer and have a very promising career. Buf, in choosing, a person should consider nof only fhe advanfages buf fhe disadvanfages as well. They should fhink nol' only of financial refurns buf also wh-efher or nof fhe work will really hold fheir inferesfg and whefher or nof fhey are capable of doing if successfully. A good facfor fo consider in choos- ing, is fhe choice of a field which is nof over-crowded, buf rafher encour- ages new employmenf insfead. This should be clone for one's own benefif and for fhe benefif of ofhers. Two ex- amples of fhese fypes of fields are feaching and nursing. Bofh are in greaf demand and fhe schools are easier fo gef info because fhey are nof over- crowded. Music is anofher enjoyable field in which fo enfer: buf if is nof of much service as feaching and nursing, alfhough one may gel' a lof of personal enioy- menf from music. There is a saying aloouf music which is very frufhful and full of meaning, Music cannof hurf. Sunshine can burn you, food can poison you, words can condemn you, picfures can insull' you: music cannof punish- Only bless. lf a person is in doubf abouf +his field and would like fo know a loif more of whaf if is like, fhere are a few Summer music camps which hold ses- sions of Two weeks or a monfh. l'lere one is able fo learn whaf if's like fo plan concerfs wifh ofher young people and find fheir opinions abouf music. lf is very educafional as well as a lol' of fun. Dr. Francis Bailey, presidenf of Gor- ham Sfafe Teachers College in a recenl message fo us, poinfed ouf fhaf, The besf years are going fo be fhe years ahead and we should all be prepared: work well foday and fomorrow will fake care of ifself. Joan l-laskell '50 Is Hollis Progressive? Ladies and Genflemen: America is a greaf counfry. The greafesf in fhe world. We, fhe people of l-lollis, Maine, make up parf of fhis counfry and yef we don'f realize if enough. Alfogefher, l-lollis is a good all-around average fown or af leasf if was, buf ifs cifizens have begun fo slacken up. You don'f'fake your righf fo vofe and use if.. l wonder whaf you would say if some day some ofher nafion fakes fhaf righf away which is quife possible. One of fhe greafesf fhings neglecfed in l-lollis is fhe schools. Times have changed since you, our parenfs and friends, were in school. Whaf you had when you were young is now inade- quafe. Things have become more mod- ernized. l-lollis schools are nof up fo clafe. l-lere, in fhis fown, are sfill found fhe one and fwo room school houses. These small schools would nof be as bad if fhey had modern equipmenf. The schools we affended before high school had no lighfs, running wafer, or screens. In order fo gef fhese fhings we had fo gef ouf and earn fhe money ourselves, The fown couldn'l' gef These fhings for us because fhe people did nof feel fhaf fhey could afford fo have fheir faxes raised. We are now in high school. Even Though we have a new building we Tind ThaT we do noT have adequaTe equip- menT To have a modern school. l3IrsT among The Things we need are some new courses such as home econo- mics, a course in agriculTure or mech- anics and a beTTer business course Than is available aT The presenT Time. This would beTTer TiT The ones who can'T aT- Tord To go To college, and have To earn a living righT away. This would help Them To obTain a much beTTer iob. l-lollis has been Taking an acTive parT in sporTs Tor a good many years. Up unTil lasT year all we had in The way oT sporTs equipmenT were horseshoe piTs and ping-pong Tables. We didn'T even have These unTil The new high school was builT. l.asT year we Tinally succeed- ed in geTTing a baseball diamond, and earned money Tor girls baskeTball suiTs and boys baseball uniTorms. We sTill have no place To pracTice baskeTball and would noT be able To Take parT in This sporT iT iT were noT Tor The kindness oT anoTher Town. NexT is The urgenT need Tor a music Teacher. WiThouT one iT cuTs oTT a large amounT oT our income which we need To keep The school going. We can'T possibly mainTain our band and puT on opereTTas wiThouT some help. We spenT a greaT deal oT money Tor 'nusical in- sTrumenTs, 'Thinking iT a good invesTmenT. lT will be money wasTed wiThouT a band. l'm noT saying ThaT iT is impossible To geT along wiThouT These Things because we can and have, buT wiThouT These Things iT puTs us way behind oTher Towns oT The same size and does noT live up To The ideals oT The UniTed STaTes. IT says ThaT we are all born equal and have an equal chance. Do you, our parenTs and Triends, all good ciTizens. Think ThaT we have These equal chances? Anne lVlouTon '50 A Cafeteria l'lealTh is a mosT imporTanT parT oT our educaTional abiliTy, For iT we do noT enioy good healTh. Then we cannoT-re- member all The Things we sTudy-neiTh- er can we Teel The energy ThaT is need- ed To become a good scholar. Food is The mosT imporTanT oT all Things ThaT give us good healTh. In iT we receive The viTamins and minerals ThaT assure us oT good eyesighT, good sTrong bodies and a clear mind. IT we have proper Tood, and dieTiTians say ThaT The average pupil who carries a cold lunch To school does noT have The Tood he needs, many oT us know ourselves ThaT iT we were where we could enjoy' a balanced meal every day, we would be more resisTanT To disease, have more oT whaT we call PEP and in reTurn geT a beTTer mark Than we do now in school. For proper Tood is whaT snaps us ouT oT ThaT lazy Teeling ThaT never did geT us anywhere. To be sure, we would all enioy a gym- nasium. There is no quesTion abouT ThaT. We would enjoy many sp-orTs ThaT we do noT have in our school aT The pre- senT Time. BuT aT our age we should be able To look upon The quesTion oT gym- nasium or caTeTeria in a sensible way, Trying To see The good in boTh. ln a counTry school, The whole Thing is seT up quiTe diTTerenTly Trom The ciTy schools. CiTy pupils seldom have as Tar To go To school as counTry pupils. Many oT us walk long disTances in The Tresh crisp morning air, Maybe some oT us can hardly realize The beneTiTs oT iT Tor we iusT don'T care Tor The TrosTy air, buT underneaTh we know ThaT The Tresh morning air is one oT The besT conTrib- uTors To good healTh. We receive one oT The besT Torms oT exercise by walk- ing. l'lave we lacked exercise aTTer a brisk walk in The morning air? Who would say ThaT iT would be beTTer To ride To school in a bus and exercise in a heaTed gymnasium? BUT ThaT is one OT The reasons ThaT ciTy pupils need a gym. NexT we musT Think oT The whole Thing in view oT sporTsmai.ship. Games oT baseball, baskerball, and all oTher evenTs, such as The checker conTesT and speaking conTesTs are The very besT oT characTer building and comradeship re- quiremenTs. How many oT These do we have To geT along wiThouT? To be sure we are handicapped wiThouT a gym, buT These sporTs are noT enTirely ouT ol: The picTure, are They? Could we noT develop comradeship To some exTenT in a caTeTeria where we could enjoy each oTher's company while eaTing a good meal? And a good aTh- leTe musT have a good Tood supply iT he is To become a healThy player. We would noT have To sacriTice a Thing ThaT we have now if we did noT have a gym, buT leT me call To your aTTenTion The many beneTiTs a caTeTeria would bring To all oT us. Every pupil in The school would geT a balanced meal every day-and iT is noT a Talse sTaTemenT when l say ThaT many oT our parenTs are noT able. Tinan- cially or oTherwise, To guaranTee us such a meal when iT musT be puT inTo a lunch box To be eaTen cold, day aTTer day. Those pupils ThaT Travel a long dis- Tance would have Time To enioy a caTe- Teria when They would noT be able To . ,- spare The Time To use a gym. Many of us have Things To do aT home ThaT would keep us from enioying The gym as much as Those who are more TorTunaTe. And The cosT oT This would also have To be considered. There are Taxpayers in This Town ThaT have a hard job To meeT Their Tax bills when Tax paying Time comes. Every- Thing cosTs so much more Than ever be- Tore, The common ciTizen of The Town would much raTher see addiTional money raised and Teel ThaT his Tamily was re- ceiving beneTiTs To Their healTh and so was his neighbor's Tamily, Than To pay Those addiTional Tunds, ThaT he has worked so hard To geT, To build a gym ThaT only a porTion ol: sTudenTs would have an opporTuniTy To enioy. A caTeTeria, when well carried on, would receive a large porTion oT The money expended Trom The sTaTe. ln TacT, The serving oT one hoT dish each day would warranT The help Trom The sTaTe. , Good healTh begins wiTh good Toocl and good air and good exercise. gfihe pupils oT l-lollis l-Iigh School have good Maine air To breaThe, They have The ex- ercise necessary Tor good healTh, They have The privileges oi sporTs, alThough somewhaT confined-we have all These -buT noT a hoT lunch: aTTer a Torenoon of sTudy in The classroom a caTeTeria would help us To eliminaTe Those boxes oT cold Tood ThaT we have Tired oT long ago and we would geT The real beneTiTs oT good Tood, properly cooked and served. and in Turn know ThaT we had beneTiTed in a way ThaT noThing buT a cafeTeria could give us. IT killed or seriously in- iurod abouT Three-TiTThs oT The enTire populaTion. ln This desTrucTion all ex- cepT one-TenTh oT The docTors and nurses were killed. Hiroshima was The TirsT To go, buT Three days laTer, as The war was being broughT To a close, Nagasaki TelT The desTrucTion OT The second greaT aTomic bomb in hisTory. WhaT was leTT oT These ciTies was IiTTle more Than ashes and a puTF oT smoke. We all were Thrilled aT The news oT how our new miracle weapon had ended The war. V-J Day was celebrared and Hiro- shima and Nagasaki were TorgoTTen. ATTer V-J Day our naTion began To consider This bomb. IT was new and hor- rible. We had made iT and we were going To have To keep iT wheTher we liked iT or noT, We had losT our iloy. Since we cannoT TorgeT This new dis- covery, all we can do is To Try To keep il' a secreT. l do noT believe ThaT This is possible. America, only by The grace oT God, discovered iT TirsT. IT was noT only our scienTisTs, buT scienTisTs Trom allied na- Tions ThaT helped us To geT iT TirsT. A conTerence was called in America aT a Time during The war. We knew ThaT our enemies were close To The se- creT. We had To geT There TirsT. The only way To do This was To combine Torces wiTh oTher counTries. For long, Tireless monThs and years They worked on and on wiTh many Tailures. Many were injured or burned by The Radio AcTiviTy, eiTher seriously or TaTally, buT They kepT -on working. They were rac- ing againsT Time. The Time ThaT mighT save us or desTrOy us. OTTen when They Tried ouT experi- menTs, They never knew whaT mighT happen. IT could have been ThaT some experimenTs in which an explosion was necessary mighT have seT oTT a chain oT explosions in The air, Thus wiping ouT The world in a Tew seconds. We are The only ones aT presenT ThaT have The aTomic bomb, buf wiThin Tive or six years or even sooner, oTher na- Tions will have iT. America has only a Tew oT The greaT scienTisTs on earTh. OTher counTries have as many or more. They, Too, will possess The secreT in Time. The aTomic bomb is noT iusT anoTher weapon. IT is a weapon suiTable Tor desrroying large ciTies. When and iT we do have anoTher war, we shall have bombs Twice as desTrucTive as The ones we have now and The ones ThaT de- sTroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. IT probably would noT Take more Than Tive bombs To desTroy any ciTy in The world. Our Three greaTesT worries are: Ill One pound oT uranium lwhich is used largely in The making oT aTomic bombsl can cause more damage Than one Thousand Tons oT T. N. T. IZI The TacT ThaT oTher counTries will soon have iT and mighT aTTack us. l3l The TacT ThaT There is no adeqwre defense. The bomb ThaT we have Today can desTroy aImosT anyThing aT Two miles, aT Three miles parT desTrucTion oT brick walls, aT Tive miles rooT desTrucTion, and aT Twelve miles compIeTe window de- sTrucTion. The Tire area OT damage is Three miles by six Thousand TeeT. IT we do have a World War lll, iT will be a horrible one, a Two way aTomic war. All ciTies oT any imporTance aT all would be devasTaTed3 bombed To noThing. The civilizaTion would be de- sTroyed, everyThing gone. The vicTor and The loser would be in The same boaT. IT would noT make a biT oT diTTer- ence who won This World War Ill, A news wriTer said a Tew monThs ago, There may be some doubT as To which weapons will be used in The nexT war, buT There is no doubT which ones will be used aTTer ThaT. They will be The spear and The slingshoT. We all know ThaT There musT be some means oT conTrol or There will be no earTh To conTrol. This may sound im- possible buT iT is True iusT The same. I Think ThaT The only possible way To have aTomic conTrol is To have iT conTrolled inTernaTionally. EvenTually when everyone has This secreT, The whole world will be in danger, and This does noT spare America as iT has in The pasT Two years. There should be a good ATomic Energy ConTroI Commission seT up, one ThaT knows and believes in The responsibiliTy oT Their problem. There should be a member Trom every naTion. They should give only scienTisTs legal policy leTTing Them make only a Tew war weapons, in case oT aTTack, buT spending as much Time as possible Tind- ing ways in which aTomic energy could loeneTiT us. Many Things have been ThoughT pos- sible Tor aTomic energy To do Today such as in scienTiTic experimenTs, in chemisTry and chemical engineering, iT is OT greaT use in power producTion. IIT has been said ThaT in a Tew years we will have a new Type oT sTove, one ThaT is cold. A radio acTive currenT is senT Through The Tood which cooks iT in a Tew seconds.l The lasT and greaTesT use is in medicine. Some oT These uses are Tracing and labeling red blood cells in shock cases, To check blood circulaTion Time in cases oT diabeTes and harden- ing oT The arTeries, as a Tracer Tor cal- cium To deTermine The healing oT bone TracTures, and Tor measuring The Tunc- Tioning oT paThoIogical Thyroid glands. IT has also been said ThaT in some way iT may be developed in The near TuTure To cure cancer. As yeT They have Tound no pracTicaI use Tor The explosion oT The bomb. The ATomic Energy ConTrol Com- mission should see To iT ThaT all aTomic energy pIanTs are equally disTribuTed so ThaT all naTions, in case oT necessiTy will have one. By no means should any na- Tion be able To veTo when anoTher na- Tion has To be punished Tor violaTing The laws oT The commission. ATomic Energy is l'lisTory's rnosT chal- lenging problem. IT depends on all oT us on The earTh wheTher we have an everlasTing peace or an explosion, a flash oT Tlame and a puTT OT smoke. He has run many a race and come in on fop, buf I would like fo menfion firsf a race' which consisfed of fwenfy horses, in which race he came in fhird. Anofher greaf evenf was when Brodie las he is called for shorfl won a SI I,OO0 pace af Springfield, lll. in Au- gusf of fhe same year. He had iusf won fhe race and was going back fo parade in fronf of fhe grandsfand when Jess was sfrick- en wifh a hearf affack and fell fronf- ward in his sulky. Buf as if was, fhe driver was faken from fhe sulky wifhouf even anyone going fo BrocIie's head fo hold him back. We are all very proud of his earnings for he has earned over 535,000 as well as his fro- phies. He has won fhe lasf six races fhaf he has compefed in and will confinue his greaf work, buf af presenf he is only working ouf every few days because of a lameness fhaf he gof from a hump in 'rhe frack af Bangor.
