The Springs of Hollins By MARY PARMEN'rER Because certain small springs of water never ceased to flow out of the earth in a pleasant forest near a Great Road, along which passed pioneers who were to make a new world beyond certain mountains, there grew up about these sources a cluster ot friendly buildings. Here dwelt gentle people who lived good lives. Along the Great Road came sojourners who drank of the small springs which never ran dry, and after a time traveled on refreshed. These told others of these Welling waters. New pilgrims C?l11'1C, and old ones often retu1'ned to drink, and yet the springs sufliced. For the wells were old and yet the waters were new. Nor was this a new thing, hut a wonder long known to prophets and poets in their divers times and places. VVhere there were tiny springs of sweet water, there the children of the desert found life in abundance as if by the rivers of Paradise. Upon a steep hill called Helicon the winged horse Pegasus struck once with his ringing hoof and out flowed the clear water of Hippoerene, the well of the Nine Muses, not yet is it exhausted. The gods of the main sea deep know that the rivers flowing into their great demesnes come from the heart of the earth, from the small ever- sacred springs, and that the green-bearded river gods with their flowing urns, the sweet nyinpths of the fountains with their echoing voices, are of like deity with them. Their interpreters, the poets, have always so sung and said, whether on bright Parnassus, or in the dim forests of Logres and of Lyonnesse, or beside some VVcll at the VV'orld's End. Indeed those poets whom we call of the Renaissance were so well aware of this above-mentioned marvel of the new water from old wells, and likewise of another, that of old water out of new Wells, that they scrupled nothing to announce boldly the arrival of the aforesaid Nine Muses in the small isles of Britain, and even, by way of prophecy, that they would preside over new Pierian springs of art and learning in the western world called Virginia. This was a true prophecy. Fullilled in part, and still in process of unfolding, it shows us even now all that certain great explorers ot the realms of gold were able to find. out. For when, as we recall, the sapient Prince Pantagruel and his wise and merry company of gentlemen and scholars sailed about the world in quest of an answer which 'would quench their burning thirst for knowledge, the oracle nt the holy well gave them at last but the one word: i'Drinkl And they came to the waters. lVluch virtue, then, may be found in small springs if they are the everflowing ones frequented by those who truly thirst. But to drop our riddles, and speak in simple sooth of Hollins: it is true that many generations have here found sources of inspiration and strength for which the little springs of sulphur :uid limestone water, so far-renowned in the past, may serve as symbols, but which themselves have :1 higher reality, unique in each individual experience. The true springs of Hollins are the people who have taught, and learned, and lived their lives here, simple and earnest and daring, friendly, and quiet and true, Around them clusters what we call the college, to them return the travelers, and in each generation of students are to he found new springs of Hollins like unto the old, while yet the old remain.
