With what emotion recollected in tranquillity shall we not conjure up the visions our minds have stored of the Library portico, as night has fallen upon day, and autumn and winter yielded place to spring? How often have we glanced at the columns gleaming white beneath the translucent blue of an October sky, or shimmering in the soft haze of a late April twilight, or towering loftily toward a windy moon sailing through magic clouds? Is it too vain a fancy, one wonders, to find in these colonnades and columns, in the spirit of the very brick and mortar of our physical Hollins, a symbol of our kinship with the Greeks? Perhaps we are vain, and in this very effort deny our kinship with that most clear-seeing race who gazed fearlessly at truth and recorded frankly what they saw. But they, least of all, who took-perfec- tion for their aim, would condemn us for our high endeavor, and in the ideal that Hollins holds before us, however far we may fall short, we can assert our spiritual descent from them. In the external world, beauties of mountain and meadow, Woodland and stream, so familiar, so loved that-they became incarnate in fair, sentient forms, in the world of men, individual worth and mutual dependence so recognized that harmony, musical living, became the goal, in the world of a man's own life, the same harmony, balance of development in mind and body, so appreciated that perfect symmetry became the ideal not only of Phidias but of Aristotle as well-this was the Greek life at its highest. Dare We not say that we strive to follow with fair footing these highroads? Are not the beauties of our mountains and our streams, of our upland meadows, our Forest of Arden and our willows, in their infinite variety, so endeared to us that sometimes, in a fleeting moment, we, too, have caught a vision of a nymph's hair flying in the breeze, or heard the distant tinkle of a naiad's laugh? VVhat fair thoughts and forms have not come into our minds as we have swung our feet, sitting on the wall of the little cemetery, or as we have lain, tranquil, disembodied spirits, in the sun on an overhanging cliff of Tinker? In our community, our little world of men, whatever means we use, to whatever obligations we may bow, has not our goal been musical living -mutual dependence and mutual responsibility making their appeal to our innate desire for rhythm and harmony? Balance in labor and leisure, in mental, and physical, and spiritual activity-this, though we may falter, is our ideal for our small world. And for our individual lives the same symmetry, attained more perfectly in some than in others, but most fully by those who interpret best the spirit of Hollins. These have discovered not only the gods of woodland and meadow, but have gazed far into the clear eyes of Athena, these have seen the pure loveliness of intellectual attainment, and have come in some measure to understand and experience, be it from afar, the beauty of wisdom. 'l heir prayer has been the prayer of Socrates as he stood under a plane tree on the slopes of the soft flowing Ilissus: f'Dear Pan and other gods who may be here, grant that I may grow beautiful within, May what I have with what I am be friendly. May I count the wise man rich, and let my store of gold be such as only a sober man coulcl take as his spoil. This is the spirit of Hollins, this the beauty that its columns symbolize. We would wish that it might become a part of the heritage which generations of Hollins girls have helped to create, and that, though intangible, it may be more than an evanescent contribution to the inheritance that has been ours. VVe would ask of the long line of Hollins girls stretching into the far future, that they cherish a tradition and an atmosphere that we have known and loved. But we, who have seen Tinker in shadow and in sun, who have felt the charm of moonlight on white columns, who have heard the whispering of willow trees at dusk-we too have a priceless heritage to cherish, a heritage that has become a part of our very being. For Hollins has seen the birth of our keenest intellectual ex- perience, our deepest friendships, our most stimulating contacts. It has given us a glimpse of values hitherto undreamed of, the vision of realities heretofore unknown. The creativity of its atmosphere has given us new values and new ideals. Inextricably woven with the memories dearest to us are the four years we have spent at Hollins. lVIemories, values, visions-these are the jewels we carry with us, this our heritage. And though, for us, it's whither away, the gems we possess are indestructible. Time can never mar them, nor can Fortune touch the permanency of their influence. A part of us there shall always be that is dedicated to a quiet valley in Virginia, a part of our hearts that shall always belong to Hollins. UT ON a twig at the edge of the world sat a jay bird. This jay bird had been everywhere and seen everything and found that people do 'not change with time. Coming suddenly and with a start on the jay bird as I came suddenly and with a start on the edge of the wo1'ld, the only thing I could think to ask the bird was, How old are you ? As old as your questions, replied the cock-eyed bird. So with a leap of ancient affection, I asked the bird to tell me of a class that left Hollins one thousand and twenty-eight years ago. Yesterday, began the jay bird, as I flew over a puddle in Paradise I saw Victoria FitzGerald sitting there catching long strings of Worms, while Julia, in the form of a fat che1'ub, rolled, squealing, in the grass beside her uttering happy and absurd noises such as 'Boo and Baronf This was too much even for a jay bird., so I flew in sea1'ch of a saner region only to find that there was very little sanity in Paradise, for in the middle of the next field Fooshe was standing on her head and with wildly gesticulating heels directing a revolt of the angels. Among them was Kay flying through the clouds above on a winged horse, blowing wind from her puffed cheeks, while Nancy Long in cap and gown with a rake in one hand and a fly on the end of her nose, rode around her in circles. A black streak suddenly hit me, and I found myself on the mud guard of Kay jordan's Packard. She had just left a. comet twelve miles behind. In the rumble seat was Ruth johnson all tumbled around with a pile of white Persian kittens. The first bump Kay hit, however, sent me flying into the lap of a lady in a rocking chair. On my first bounce I recognized Burwell. There she was sipping cool beverages as she chuckled to herself and con- jured up her friends to chuckle with her. Suddenly this sane and peaceful region was rent by a horrible yell as Norma Foy rushed across the Fields of the Blessed, hurling huge red firecrackers at the fleeing form of one, Jay Oflutt. Jay was wildly sputtering with rage, but she was withal a noble sight. Behind them ran Freda rnurmuring Greek citations on Peace and hurling buckets of Water helpfully at the little beast, Norma. On fervent wing I flew to another and quieter region of Paradise where I found lVIartha Huguley. She had so many children she did not know what to do, because they all walked just as she did and insisted on walking in single file behind her wherever she went. Helen was seated on a stump in this region trying to put their walk to music. The result sounded for all the world like 'The Beautiful 1359 E4- iSi THQ SPENSTG we M or Nmereem THEBTY-TWO gpg?-1Fx-'Si.-1wi-inf-2ry-'afaiwiwhf-is-ferarfsffssww-Hsgwtsiwrear Q E gm m.s1.s.-fi.-Aww-JiPFzf-1rf-1fQJ--1sfapf-1i'fwtFff?imfeai:-affn,-1E-esaiffra Blue Darzubef lldargo was with them, vegetating in beautiful clothes and feasting on sunlight and cream. Two miles and a half further on I found Frances lVIears cultivating her garden with a serene smile on her face, while Esther Shoup in the next field contentedly played Little Boy Blue with four sheep, a hay stack and a silver horn. A smile spread over my beak as I observed the ends for which people studied Greek and Chemistry in their earlier days. But neither time nor my Wings would let me reflect long enough to discover the whys and wherefores of after-lives, and with a start I found myself in a part of Heaven called Zion where I ran into Leah Jones taking a week-end. Betsy Rice had not yet arrived, but Leah said she was still marching. Zion being in the left-hand corner of Paradise, I did not wish to go back, so flying through a field of lilies and over the edge of I-Ieaven, I started downward. As I passed the earth, I noticed an idol seated on its most comfortable hill. The familiar blink of its eyes told me that it was Dorothy, who had found peace at last. Around this hill in a more active peace, danced Lulu, bouncing a red rubber ball. The next minute, however, I had plunged into I-Iell's profoundest deep. There, to my utter astonishment, I flew square into Kit Witschen. Asking her what in the name of Consistency she was doing there, I fell suddenly silent to learn that while at college she had embezzled class funds to buy a pink kimono. But the shock of finding Kit was mild compared with the shock I received on recognizing Janet in the form of a little black bug. With a peal of buggish laughter, she took me into a lofty torture chamber where, on a carnal slab, lay Mary Creech, who had been, Janet said, an eminent physician during nine of her lives. But now her former patients were sticking things in her. Camille Dawson was dancing around her with an egg beater, because Creech had pulled out her teeth one season in life. On the next slab lay poor lVIary Watkixis, while little imps with big screw drivers tightened up her joints. Jane Sutherland sat on a three-legged stool beside her, psychology beaming in her eyes, ,and rzuig a bell every time Mary made the proper response. My visit to this chamber, however, was short-lived as I was blown on a gust of screams into a great hot oven where Leonora steamed and baked. Her European tours, which she had prolonged throughout her life, had become such orgies that the devil finally claimed her for his own. This reminded me that I had 11Ot seen the devil. So I peeked Betty Taylor on the ear as she lay in a miserable tangle of telephone wiresand she told me that Beverly Chalker had mysteriously grown a tail longer than the devil's and had taken his place. Speaking of the devil, Beverly came chortling in. Her chortles, however, developed into horrible faces when Mary Alice swooped down on her and began pulling her tail. Ma1'y Alice, all the while, 60 ,myyrue SPINSTGR LJ My OF NINEETEGN ll-llPsTY TWO uzll rg Qgnarr-Irrfflufriui-fn.-1idrwif-1i'i-er5cse.ufJ:mrFeff.1i1'fesserm5'?,sf2eir-eirsite e E un wear-iidf-IEP:Hiffufifiaiwaf-112:75-frafs-1uigsfgwswiwsf-'Vermeer .mal never changed her expression but in her quiet way murmured diabolic shrieks of joy. Following Beverly's rolling eye I saw it light on a red-hot rock where Joe Landes, Katherine King, Jeanette Bauer and lVIay Ruggles were all cheating themselves in a snarling game of bridge. Jeanette and Katherine were partners and had negatives in their pockets of all the hands. Mae and Joe just pecped but this so pleased the diabolic Beverly that green sparks flew from her hands as she rubbed them together. Wiggliiig her finger at lVIargaret Sockwell, there was a sudden burst of satanic- soprano-hymns-of-thanksgiving. But Beverly soonput a stop to this by sending her henchman, lVIarie lVIanley, to put a cork in IVIZl1'gEl1'Ct,S mouth until the devil wished for more. Strolling along with this entertaining Bend I came to the Flower Fields of I-Iell. There was Marga1'et Nabors standing on tiptoe smelling a rose while in another part of the garden Dilworth was frantically picking petals off daisies. Yvhile we watched them, the old devil smiled gently and ordered Jane Folk to be thrown into the middle of the field where she was henceforth doomed to Hit eternally from flower to Hower murmuring, 'Ah, how sweetl' By a little stream that ran through the fields sat Sylvia and Flora blowing soap bubbles while mystic moments passed. This seemed a strange torture until I noticed that, like all good New Yorkers, they were 'raring to go' somewhere. But even as I smelt the Howers, a sizzling clang of gongs called the devil to her judgment seat. There among the newly arrived victims dragged before her was Nfary Watsoii, who had been caught singing in the rain. 'Make her into a sandwich for my lunch,' rolled the devil, 'and bring me worse victims.' Tola was then brought up for having followed her own devil through life, and for punishment, locked in a room with a secret. Betty Cole was then dragged in. She was still being tortured for wicked actions with Campus Crumbs, and had just 'atoned for her sins by se1'ving one thousand four hundred and sixty-four years as a chicken under the devil's table. Beverly, saying that she couldn't have her in I-Iell, sent her back to earth. After her, Betty Robinson was summoned for giving misinformation to Industrial Girls. She was consigned to be boiled for dinner and served on the plate next to lVIary VVatkins. Feeling a desire to chew on her tasty victims, the devil was carried piggy-back to the Hall of Food by Ted Tidwell, where lVIarjorie Einstein had just installed a radio that did not work. In a corner of a room Matthai High was stirring foul compounds in a boiling caldron over which Betty VVaring mumbled poetic incantations. Beverly with a wild hal ha! leaped into her chair and, brandishing a red-hot spoon, turned fiercely to her breakfast. Her first mouthful was interrupted in mid-air by a familiar voice, 'Oh, last.night I had the strangest dream-.' But nobody listened while Tim's voice droned on-'I was creating the most wonderful atmosphere'. 61 R+ T H S DLSQELG R - x ,. lejigggpFFa:uf-'uf-1uP-frzwf-11:11Hn?-fxgaawfjwmrwaahwxdxax--miwman LF N e :ll 1. .m.i'.Ic-?l,r-4lr-'im-llr-'Xr-'l:f'lr-fir-'lr-'lfrf-llf-4Ts:'!r'f'ir-'ir-4fX14'T-'Er-ffi3I7:- iT-'ln- f:fi'l.54i?L 1. 1. w.. , . ,.-' 1 WZ 111. With the growing interest in sport, the Athletic Association desired to foster a program that would be broad enough in its interest to encourage every girl to participate in some type of activity. The emphasis was placed on individual games rather than on the highly organized team games which were already offered by the Association. Golf, Deck Tennis, Volley Ball, Horseshoe Pitching, Clock Golf, Nine Court Basket Ball and Swimming were the sports offered for Intramural participation. The dormitories were used as new units of competition in the Intramural program. In developing this new type of competition it is our desire to offer a broad and comprehensive p1'ogram that will give each girl an opportunity to participate in a sport of particular interest to her.
