' 1' 'Q-' Heritage A OlX'Ilf'l'IlXfIliS a child has blue eyes like its mother's, a thumb like its grand- uncle's, and a piece of old lace which has come all the way through generations of packing from poverbial lavender to practical moth balls. But the eyes are the child's own eyes for the mother's had a different expression, the thumb plays the piano instead of holding a nail as did the thumb of its granduncle, who was a carpenter, and the lace is cut to the shoulders of a modern gown, the like of which it never decked before. Thus the thread of permanence and the thread of transieney are twisted together. For nearly a century now Hollins has bequeathed lea1'ning by law of honors and example of integrity. That fact is not changed because this year the curve of her curriculum will bend wider to enclose an existing intellectual demand. Little by little, as sessions pass, students have built up a citizenship based on student standards, a government of self control. Is this less fine because to-day they dare new freedom to suit a present way of life? Spring after spring, while daffodils blow on the hillside, the Bday Queen has walked through the trees in the Forest of Arden. VVhat matter if this spring she wears the green of a wood nymph instead of a stately white satin, or binds her hair with a wreath of Howers rather than a coronet of pearls? Hollins girl has passed down to Hollins girl keepsakes which she calls t1'aditions. hlemory is sweet, but it is not her memories of Tinker Day, of Christmas hiadonnas, of Red and Blue games, or of Senior Sings which make her unavoidably kin to the place where she was educated and the girls who go there in all of the years. These are symbols, but they are not her real inheritance. She cannot pack a suitcase to take home full of the facts accumulated' in college, she can only take with her a capacity for 'l'ruth. Nor Cilll she lay away in her jumbo unalterable patterns for the girl who will follow, she can only leave the privilege to change and fit according to the highest need. She has laid her fair hand on scholarship, activities, daily living and it has either left no mark or an indelible print. The reach of her thought, the 3.ClVCllfll1'C of her way, the grace of her heart are her legacy, whether she wills it or not. No man can give anything, save himself. Thus the most transient becomes the most permanent and the royal heritage which a college can bestow is as variable and i1'idescent as minds and personalities, as ehangeless and enduring as a sky of stars.
