Qfl r c emoria 5 THli omo outnumber the living. The Hall of Death is boundless, its doors are where man is, and there is room for all. Truly, the world is not for aye. Only a little hour and the noblest, the most eager, too, are no more, they are dust, they are changed, they are gone! They are Like stars in lfll' dftfp of tlu' sky, llflfifh arise' on Ihr' glass of lllv sngr B111 arf' losl fwlzfn llzfir fwalrhfr is gone. Fortunately, for society, there, are watchers who wish to commemorate as well as remember. Inspired by the bright memory of one who is dead, of one who, in the welter of the world, managed to wrest from it some of those richer values which often make a life, with all of its disappointments and undimtned peaks, strife and endeavor, grief and glory, a worthwhile adventure, they sometimes seek to perpetuate that life by a beneiiccnt act. They say to a community, an organization, or an institution, it :Tix in my mrmory lorfdfl .'Iu.fly0urs1'lfu1's shall larrp Ihr kfy of il. During her long history certain personalities at Hollins have been, for some at least, beacons of hope, radiant with ardour divine. ln a few cases memorials have been created in the form of books, a memorial clock, prizes, portraits, a library building and money for general endowment. This year marks, too, the completion of a beautiful garden given by Mrs. Huffman as a memorial to her mother, herself a lover of flowers and young people and Hollins College. But perhaps no college so old as Hollins has fewer such memorials. ln but one case, moreover, has an individual given as much as Ii35,ooo. This, of course, is not surprising, Hollins being privately owned. Upon the completion of the endowment, however, this difficulty will disappear. Indeed, I like to think that shortly the College will be able to erect as a gift from some friend or alumna a memorial dormitory for Juniors and Seniors costing at least 1iIO0,000. Wvhat better way to commemorate a noble life? Then, too, such a memorial would make it possible for more upper classmen to enjoy, when they wished, a kind of quiet contemplation and rangy speculation not possible at present where no one possesses a room of her own. I like to think, also, that numerous others will follow the fine example of one father and mother who have recently promised to endow a memorial scholarship. Hollins, like all other American colleges, needs, not more students, but more students of the right sort. The competition' between colleges for brilliant, resource- ful and deserving students grows keener each year. Everybody is on the lookout for students with a higher voltage of intellectual power. Scholarships and fellowships are available everywhere. Hollins, at present, has not one, except the three or four given by the College itself. This serious situation, let us hope, will be met by gracious offers from those who, while paying homage to a dear friend, make it possible also for a worthy student to act as keeper of the key to a cherished memory. F. LAMAR JANNEY.
