The edu- cation and experience of its staff, the sincere in- terest and efforts of its school board, the curricu- lar and extra-curricular programs, and the school plant are some of the valuable entities of the Hollidaysburg Community High School. However, all of these are important only to the extent they influence the educational develop- ment of you, the students. Above all, the stu- dents are the most important factor in every school. You, the members of the senior class, have been and are a valuable asset to Hollidaysburg Community High School. You have given pro- fusely of yourselves-inspiration, time, talent, in- dustry. Therefore, your returns have been great. I know of no way of judging the future but by the past , therefore, it is my conviction that you will be valuable assets as citizens through- out your life as you have been throughout your high school days. Congratulations on a highly successful high school career and best wishes for your continued success and happiness in your future life. Dr. Norman and Mr. Iones confer. SUPERINTENDENT Secretary-Miss Reese PRINCIPAL Secretary-Iocnne Langham Class Sets Own Requirements For some time you, the members of the class of '59, have had your standards or requirements set up for you. This will continue to be true for a small percentage of you who will continue a formal education by attending college, nursing schools and commercial schools. The remainder of you can set up you own requirements and then make yourself meet them. What will your stand- ards be? We believe that the Hollidaysburg Com- munity Senior High School has provided you with a strong foundation on which you can build a mighty future. That future will require the best from you as you toil day by day. Do not for one moment believe that life's chances for high achievement are closed to you. Secretary-Iudy Miller MR. LINDSEY Niles E. The end of our senior year is rapidly coming into view, and soon we shall iour- ney our separate ways in society to fulfill our ambitions and to turn our dreams into realities. But regardless of our future des- tinations we will never forget our high school years. The sophomore year was climaxed by the Big Top Hop, our class party, which was held in the Junior High gym. A more active and memorable year fol- lowed as we took the role of Juniors. The Christmas season was the time and the setting for the Junior Class Party held in the cafeteria. On May 23, l958, the date of the Junior-Senior Prom, we played host to our upper class- men. Springtime in Holland was chosen as the theme, and as a result we trans- formed the gym into a typical Dutch land- Bid Farewell to Three Fun-Packed Years S41 W ri x K S , + 1 .. .J . Silverman Juniors Under the leadership of their fine offi- cers and with the assistance of their ad- visors, Miss Treese and Mr. Cummings, the juniors have completed a very active year. They have participated in and supported all of the athletic and social events of the year. The class chose Christmas as the theme for the class party which proved to be a very enjoyable evening for all who at- tended. ln April the junior class success- fully presented a three-act comedy entitled Tattletale. The highlight of the year was, of course, the Junior-Senior Prom, which the junior class planned and presented for the enjoy- ment of the seniors. We seniors are grate- ful to the juniors for this and we wish them success next year as seniors. OFFICERS President ,,,.,,.,..., N . ,, ,,,,. ., ,, Sheldon Ott Vice-President . ,,.., .....,. The Class of '61 has now completed its oplwmores sophomore year and has proven to be a very fine group indeed and worthy of all the praise we can give. The sophomore class has made many con- tributions in the field of athletics. The Jun- ior Varsity football team was successful in chalking up an undefeated season. Most of the sophomores fitted into the pattern of senior high school life without difficulty and added their share of talent to the activities of our school. In particular, the sophomores were well represented in musical programs given by the band, orch- estra, and chorus. The Class of '61 showed talent in an- other way by putting on a successful class party for Themselves on April 3, 1959. This was attributed to the able leadership of Mr. Treese, popularly known as Chief, the Band officers and council, and the efforts of each individual member of the band. The new form of student government intro- duced in the band organization involving the Council, which consisted of two repre- sentatives of each class, kept all the mem- bers on their toes striving to do better. At football games, regardless of the weather, the band was always there to cheer the team on to victory. The success of the shows presented at half-time was the result of long hours of practice. At home basketball games also, encouragement was given to the team by the Pep Band, which is a representative group of the complete band. The band took part in many area parades and presented concerts for various local af- fairs. Some of the other activities in which the band participated were Band Days at Penn State and at Pitt University, the Music Festival at Kennywood Park, the Blair Coun- ty Band Festival, and the South Central Dis- trict Band Festival. A different type of talent, which con- sisted of intricate marching techniques and twirling, was displayed by the maiorettes of our band. The alternating head maiorettes were Carol Kopac and Debbie Miller. The other maiorettes were Darla Sill, Linda Duck, Jeanne Gill, Sandy Gluth, Bonnie Watters, Donna Hilling, Elaine Hoover, and Paula Shingler. The FIashettes, who formed on their own initiative, were Cynthia Hileman, Evelyn Himes, and Judy Lingenfelter. These girls performed with fire batons at football and basketball games. The entire corps of maiorettes performed for audiences at the Blair County Fair, football and basketball games, and a special program during Edu- cation Week. Row 1-L. Treese, Moore, D. Each year members attend the Dis- trict Orchestra Festival and one member is selected to participate in the Pennsylvania State Orchestra Festival. A string ensemble, composed of three violins and a viola, played for service clubs and local organi- zations. The interest of the orchestra mem- bers helped promote the instrumental music program of our school. DANCE BAND The Dance Band is a musical organization participated in and managed by the stu- dents. This year the Dance Band was com- posed ot Mary Ann Moore, Dixie Treese, and Jane Foor, saxophones, Dave Rhoads, Harold Marshall, and Francis Burk, trumpets, Bob Halbritter, Terry Grove, and Bill Ander- son, trornbones, Linda Treese, piano, Bill Ford ,drums. The Dance Band played tor class parties and various outside activities. The Dance Band enioyed a very busy and most successful year. 58 CHORUS Variety Is the Keynote of the Choral Program Popular music, secular music, old senti- mental favorites, and country square dances - the choruses sang all of these. Under the capable direction of Mrs. Alice Downing, both the mixed chorus and girls' chorus enioyed a very successful year. The choruses participated in the Christ- mas, Thanksgiving, and Easter assemblies. They also sang for various civic organiza- tions. A few students from the choruses met together to form quintets or trios and appeared in assemblies or other programs. This spring the choral concert was held on April 28. The concert, which was open to the public, combined both the acting and singing abilities of those participating. Certain members of the choruses were sent to County Chorus at Martinsburg, and ten members were selected to attend Dis- trict Chorus at Clearfield. One person was chosen to be a representative at State Chorus. The girls' chorus and the mixed chorus produced rhythm and harmony only be- cause of the patient guidance of Mrs. Down- ing. Under her instruction, many useful hours were spent rehearsing and planning programs which would be suitable and en- tertaining. , ,. ,Q ' l 'ja 1.1, l I L nrretc' -Cfftmi A our K' if, Jig I Q ,J,i.r,g 5 M' V hifi . .X N. f , ' 15 CJJLTCL4, 95, rnkf VCLQ rfelfn CCI 1 OL 1,40 Q LJu'5 fIAl'fJ rr. This was the cry of the editors when work began on the yearbook last fall. Under the capable direction of our advisor, Mr. Hoover, the staff reached its goal. Various difficulties were attacked and finally conquered by the staff. A cover had to be chosen, group pictures and informal shots had to be taken, and new original ideas had to be put to use. The advertising staff solicited ads, the business managers kept track of money and subscriptions, and the typists typed the articles which the edi- torial staff had written. But in spite of the hustle and bustle, everyone found time to enioy a laugh at a ridiculous picture or a humorous idea of- fered. Also it was a thrill to review some of the experiences which had occurred when we were sophomores or iuniors.
