fzdntewlenl The main goal of education should be to prepare boys and girls to be able to get along well with themselves and with others. The peace of the world and the future of the world is dependent upon education. The educa- tion that is imperative for peace is not only of the mind but of the heart as well. The real hope for permanent world harmony is greater understanding among the peoples of the world: boys and girls, women and me11, and the nations must know more about and under- stand each other. What we need, and what the world needs, is the simple, old fashioned, good-neighborly will to get along with other people. We need the fearlessness to lay aside our prejudices. We need the tolerance to let others live by their rights as we try to live by ours, regardless of race, nationality or creed. Our schools must produce leaders, followers and citizens who can arm our country with just and righteous policy, pre- judiced toward none, friendly and helpful to all. Much has been done during the past decade by education to achieve these objectives. Cooperation is the keynote. It is the very essence of democratic living. The school makes provisions for the development of cooperative attitudes through giving practice in living and working together in a cooperative environment. Putting oneself in the other fellow's place to see the problem from other viewpoints is encouraged. Understanding and appreciation of the attitudes of others are secured. A respect for the other fellow's welfare is promoted. Cooperation ls The Keynote To Peace And Harmony Teachers and students work together in social studies, classes, social lllld discussion groups, family living, playgrounds, athletics, and others, discovering ways of changing undesirable atti- tudes into attitudes that will enable them to live and play together untroubled by barriers of social class, religion, nationality and race. Only as we find ways to meet intergroup needs more effectively do we find ways to improve the total social order for no man or no group is an island, each is a part of the mainland, a piece of the community, the state and the continent.
