Since he taught us in junior high and then followed us onward to the senior high, we received the distinction of having him guide us for four years instead of three. While serving as our adviser, Mr. Hoover has conducted us through our class duties with competent leadership and has done much to make our school lives more enjoyable and more worth- while. Mr. Hoover has always tried to inspire us toward a goal of high achievement through his teaching of World History and Problems of Democracy. He has been present at and has assisted with many extracurricular activ- ities. For these and many other reasons, he has exemplified our ideal not only as a school citizen but also as a friend. As our adviser, teacher and friend, we know of no finer man than Mr. Donald Hoover, so it- is with a deep sense of pride that we dedicate our CHIMROCK to him. Time Waits For N0 M311 v-Ai..-..,,,,,,..A, k 'Vilas ,H -like The sole purpose behind the publi- cation of the Chimrock is to link the past with the present. In years to come, this book will be the only bond in unit- ing you with the happiest days of your life. Time and progress make the school an institution in which a variety of life's situations, rather than a mere recitation of the three R's, are pre- sented. In the following pages you will again relive in word and picture, the class play, parties and prom, athletic events, publications, and, above all, the many unforgettable friends you have made at Hollidaysburg High School. Therefore, we, the staff, have en- deavored to preserve for your future enjoyment the principal happenings of the school year. Thus, time waits for no man, but at your leisure cherish this book. -+i'Q2 w Ti -. HIIPI fzdntewlenl The main goal of education should be to prepare boys and girls to be able to get along well with themselves and with others. The peace of the world and the future of the world is dependent upon education. The educa- tion that is imperative for peace is not only of the mind but of the heart as well. The real hope for permanent world harmony is greater understanding among the peoples of the world: boys and girls, women and me11, and the nations must know more about and under- stand each other. What we need, and what the world needs, is the simple, old fashioned, good-neighborly will to get along with other people. We need the fearlessness to lay aside our prejudices. We need the tolerance to let others live by their rights as we try to live by ours, regardless of race, nationality or creed. Our schools must produce leaders, followers and citizens who can arm our country with just and righteous policy, pre- judiced toward none, friendly and helpful to all. Much has been done during the past decade by education to achieve these objectives. Cooperation is the keynote. It is the very essence of democratic living. The school makes provisions for the development of cooperative attitudes through giving practice in living and working together in a cooperative environment. Putting oneself in the other fellow's place to see the problem from other viewpoints is encouraged. Understanding and appreciation of the attitudes of others are secured. A respect for the other fellow's welfare is promoted. Cooperation ls The Keynote To Peace And Harmony Teachers and students work together in social studies, classes, social lllld discussion groups, family living, playgrounds, athletics, and others, discovering ways of changing undesirable atti- tudes into attitudes that will enable them to live and play together untroubled by barriers of social class, religion, nationality and race. Only as we find ways to meet intergroup needs more effectively do we find ways to improve the total social order for no man or no group is an island, each is a part of the mainland, a piece of the community, the state and the continent. M iss Reese Fam Griff Jones Sr 1 rf-taz'y--Jiicly Miller Pride ln Accomplishments ls Gained Through Hard Work Schools are measured not by their size or beauty, but by what the people, students and faculty accomplish. Most schools do not need a reorganization as some would have us be- lieve. A student body and faculty that would he dedicated to do all within their capacity to learn and to teach would soon make any school outstanding. America was built on the philosophy of pride of workmanship. Every man was proud of the work he did. To produce such Work he gave many long hours and pains- taking care to the project oI1 which he was Working. Evidence of such work may be found in practically every state of the Union. If all the students in the Hollidaysburg Community Senior High School would resolve to do their best in all of the work they have from day to day, no school would be superior to it. We need to want to do only that kind of work to which We may point with pride and say that is my best effort. Joanne Langham 7 lt's Fine Teachers, Not Beautiful Buildings, That Blake a Good School We, the 1-lass of 1958, wouhl like to take this opportunity to thank the memhers of the faenlty for the guimlanee they have given us in our three years of high school. Among other activities, the orchestra pro- vided music for the class plays and assemblies. During January, the orchestra was priv- ileged to send eight representatives to the District Orchestra Festival at State College. Those who attended were Sharen Lightner, Bob Kerns, Frances Eboch, Carol Craft, Donna Cochran, Tom Bailey, Alice Harlin, and Jeanne Drass. Tom Bailey brought further honor to the Orchestra when he was chosen to represent our school at State Or- chestra at Erie. Inasmuch as the orchestra is in a period of growth, it looks forward to an even more successful year to come. DANCE BAND The high school Dance Band is a musical organization conducted by and for the stu- dents. Under the direction of Bob Kerns, this year's Dance Band was comprised of Bill Campbell, Ray Buhler, and Harold Marshall, trumpets, Judy Gildea, Mary Ann Moore, and Carol Knepp, saxaphones, Alan Klepser, Robert Halbritter, and Terry Grove, trom- bonesg Sylvia Claar, piano, and Bob Kerns, drums. These musicians entertained for the Student Council dances, the class parties, and various outside activities. Made up mostly of seniors, the Dance Band enjoyed one of its busiest years, Row I, left In r1'gl1l-lim-pp, Moore, Gildea. Row df- Grove, llalbritter, Klepser, Marshall, Buhler, Campbell. The members were very industrious and co-operative in participating in the numerous activities. The girls found great pleasure in enter- taining the children at the Williamsburg Home. At Halloween the club gave the children a party with refreshments and enter- tainment. On Christmas morning the children received gifts, especially purchased and attrac- tively wrapped for them. The members of the club worked zealously to raise money for the painting of the Y. M. C. A. gymnasium. This was accomplished by sponsoring bake sales, a spoon supper, the Sadie Hawkins Dance, and a Sock Hop. The girls added to their treasury by selling choco- late mints. Slumber parties, Teen Talks, and tal- ent shows were held in the interest of the members. Under the able advisoring of Mrs. David Torsell, the club, consisting of twenty-five senior girls, enjoyed a highly successful year. Mgr. fS cweJaZZ The Minor Sport With The Major Record Continuing our domination of the Blair County Baseball League, the 1957 team Won the 3rd straight League title and the 9th championship in 10 years. It was an uphill battle for the Tiger nine throughout the season. They were behind nearly every game, but always pulled out a win in the last two innings. Lacking great hitting power, Coach Ray Christian was forced to use hunting and chance play to pull the games out of the fire. This was true of the last game of the season. Tied for the championship with Tyrone, the Christian men beat the latter on our home field in an exciting extra-inning game. The diamond men finished with a 8 win 3 loss league record and split a pair of Satur- day afternoon exhibition games with Altoona. mv Al llJll'lll'll, liiw-ly, lll'lll1lll. lllll'kl', .xllfll'l'SHlI, HIlj'lll'I', Rr1111:1g11i111s, l7lll'lllI1. From the 'vefry old - To the 'very young The Gray Printing Company, approaching its eightieth birthday, extends congratulations to the young men and women of Hollidaysburg Hi h School, just now entering on careers of service, which will extend into the distant future. Throughout this better part of a century, we have contributed our part to the development of America. We have recorded history, through newspaper, book, and publication. Many men have served at type banks, machines and presses of Gray Printing Company, since it started o erations way back in the last century, on January 1, 1879. Millions of? impressions have rolled off the cylinders of our presses. We are proud of our age . . . proud, because it indicates that throughout the years we have served well those many firms and accounts for whom we have produced printing over the years. Age, however, is a relative thing . . . a business may be young after eighty years, or old after twenty. Chronological age is different with an individual or a business. We are just as young as any graduate of your class . . . young in the vigor and anticipation with which we look forward to the future. May each of you retain the youthful vision you have today . . . just as the Gray Printing Company has retained its youth after seventyfnine years. THE GRAY PRINTING COMPANY DuBois, PA.
