A- THIS IS OUR WORK, OUR PLAY AND OUR RESULT Here you will see some of our work and our play, and even some of the results. None of these results could have been achieved without the co-operation of the faculty and student body. The final results, of course, will not show until much later. By dispensing with the theme idea this year, we were able to use more pictures and new ideas. Yve tried to select realistic settings for our pictures so that the incidents and events shown would remind you of the wonderful times you spent at Hollidayshurg High. YVe hope that you will enjoy reading this Chimrock as much as the staff has enjoyed putting it together. YVho's kidding who'f'f? 'Don't do that. THE PEDPLE bn . ,Y li . Q' - .zyxvf n .-' . --6 , . One of the changes brought about by this jointure is the creation ofa mammoth Board of Education. This new board is composed ofthe entire Hollidaysburg Board of Education as well as the entire boards of the other districts included in the jointure. The thirty-nine members of the Board represent the boroughs of Duncansville, Hollidaysburg, and Newry, and Allegheny, Blair, Frankstown, and Iuniata Townships. These Board members are responsible for the management and improvement of both the Hollidaysburg Iunior and Senior High Schools. Although this is the first year for the functioning of the large board, much fine work has already been accomplished. Plans 'are underway for a new Iunior High School, and an addition to the Senior High School will include a much-needed auditorium. We are certain that the Board will continue its excellent work in the years to come. Sealed, lqfl la righi: Snoberger, Treese, Perry, Hamill, Heverly, Delozier, Conrad, E. Magill. HARRY HENSHAW Superiniendenf of Sclzoolf There are days in the lives of each of us that stand out like landmarks on the highway of life. It is doubtful if any event in our lives stands out more clearly in memory than the day we were graduated from the high school. You may go on and be graduated from the college and the university and enter professional life, but each of those events will lack that freshness and thrill which can he experienced only in the early morning of life. Someone has said, Carry the pleasant delusions of youth through to old agef' So in after years, it will be a pleasure for you to remember the pleasant anticipation with which you looked upon the future as you stepped out of school life and into lite's school. Xve all wish that the fondest hopes you have today will he realized in the days to come, Mrs. Gallagher and Nliss Shaw Filing Reports 44' :Q I 4 ws - , , . 5' . YVhat has it meant to you'f The answer to this question is answered in as many ditlerent ways as there are graduates in the Class of 195-l. The various curricular and extra-curricular activities of the school have provided mantv ditlierent avenues ot' interest, work, and play tor each ol, lvou. Xvhile the academic students struggled with mathematics and languages, the commercial students were learning the intricacies of shorthand and typing, and the ag lmoys were learning contour farming and other approved farm practices. The home economics girls cooked and sewed as the ho-vs in the industrial arts shop fashioned cedar chests and gun racks. Iones Miss Langham takes over. faculty The opening of school for the 1955-54 term brought many new faces to the classrooms of H-Burg, but it didn't take the eager hard- working, sophomores long to get into the swing. Many changes have occurred in the faculty this year. Miss Davis, American llistory teacher, was replaced by Miss Heppe. Chemistry teacher, Mr. Miller, was replaced by Mr. Lindsey. Mrs. Saylor, English teacher, replaced Nliss Hess. Mrs. Saylor is the sophomore adviser. Miss McGregor, music teacher, was replaced by Miss Ross. Nliss Langham replaced Mrs. Gallagher, Mr. Iones' secretary. Two other members were added to the faculty this year. Mr. Christian, a former graduate of H-Burg, teaches mathematics and acts as sopho- more adviser. llc is also lunior Iligli assistant basketball coach and Senior lligh baseball coach, due to the resignation of Nlr. llarden, who formerly held that position. Nliss Klingel- hoeffer, who teaches English, is the other new member. The faculty has taken active part in noontime activities. Special credit goes to the faculty basketball team. Participating in the games were: Mr. Harden, Mr. Durbin, Mr. Dively, Nlr. Hill, Mr. Christian, and two student teachers, Dflr. Cummings and Wir. Melnieck. The students downed the faculty by a score of 15-10 in the first game, but the faculty came through with a 22-14 victory in the second game. The faculty picnic was held at Riggles Gap. They attended a Christmas dinner which was held in the high school gymnasium. The annual banquet will be held in the spring. .S'l.mdlu11.' 'liheir sophomore year was highlighted hy the class party. The party heing in April, they chose April Showers as their theme. During their junior year, they chose as the theme for the Iunior-Senior Prom Starlight Rendezvous. .Viany weeks of hard work were spent in making preparations for the Ubig night. Finally the time came to put the pieces together. Xvhen everything was properly in place, it wasnyt hard to see that the gymnasium was now a garden in a penthouse high atop a New York City hotel. Other highlights in the junior year were the class party, Some En- chanted Eveningf' and the play, Come Rain or Shinef, which was directed hy ixliss Beverly Vt'illiams. During their senior year, the class play, Ever Since Eve, resulted in a sellout. The seniors' last class party will never he forgotten. It' a stranger had walked into the gym on .xlareh Qo, he would have thought he were in .Xtlantic City, as the theme was Ut ln A Boardwalk ln Atlantic City. The seniors are very grateful to the iuniors for such a wonderful prom. The class of '54 has hrought many honors to II-Burg. YVitl1 a foothold firmly established in senior high, the junior class expanded its list of activities and, with lots of work and play, had a very successful year. Members contributed their time and talents to the sports, clubs, Band, and H-Burger work, and all of these groups found the 'Class of '55 to be able and willing workers. The first big social event of their year was the class party held on November 20. The appropriate theme, Indian Summer, was well carried out by the decora- tions which included a wigwam and many Indian blankets. The entertainment was in the form of an Arthur Godfrey show with various members of the class representing the Little Godfreysf' This program proved so enjoyable that it was later performed for the patients at Cresson Sanitorium. To show their appreciation to their class adviser, hir. Fox, who was hospitalized during a part of the school year, the class presented him with a Parker 5l pen and pencil set. The next project was the annual class play, Head in the Clouds, presented March 11 and 12. It was an amusing story of a high school girl with high hopes and numerous daydreams. Nlany weeks of rehearsal pro- duced an excellent play, which won much praise for both the directress, Bliss Yvilliams, and her hard-working cast. As a finale to the '53-5-1 school year, the juniors gave the lunior-Senior Prom on Nlay 29. They selected the theme and spent many hours working it out. It pro- vided a perfect evening with many memories for all who attended. 1 Ir.rI row, Aff! In rziahl: Yeckley, Neely, Smith, Benton, Donovan, Ashman, Berliey, Tomeo, Kunsman. Sa ylor The Sophomore Class, making their debut at the Hollidaysburg Senior High School, have proven throughout the year, that they can till the shoes of those who have preceeded them very capably. In future years we can expect to see this class bringing new honors to the school. The I-V squads in football, basketball, and wrestling have shown the great interest of the sophomore boys in athletics. It also brought out in the open many future stars of these sports. The various teams showed much improvement as the season progressed. Intramural sports showed that many girls were athletically inclined. The boys also were represented in the intramural sports of volley- ball, basketball, and softball. Nlr. Christian There were many sophomores in the band and many more waiting for a chance to replace the graduating seniors. It can be expected that the band will continue its good work in future years. Out of the eleven majorettes six were sophomores. The sophomores were well represented in the various clubs and organizations throughout the school. During the year they supported the many campaigns of the various organizations. They enjoyed the many dances and social affairs held at the Senior High School. Their most eagerly-awaited-for dance was the Sopho- more Party. This was their climax to their first year at the High School. It was held April ninth, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. 43 l'1r.1'f rw--', Isff In rmhis llurlwr, Suluvclcr, UH, HK-cglc, Ililcmun, Ilivhl, I-IL-lmrfl, Gfuvc, Burlw! .Ydurllll r'mu.'GilLlm-11, Ruff, Xvlli, Higgins, NVQ-sl, Rnllun, YYlll, uvx-xhlulmn, Slnmlz, Clnyunnll Thlnl rmu'fl1'v.', Shaw, llylv, lnlm nmlmuglx, Nzulm, Huxxwr, Filulxrgulx, fmnplwll, Slmu l'.mrl!1 mlm Lune, 5lrCurnnilk, llrluziur, llnlwr, Helm-l, KK-lly, Trim-lvl, .Xdamy IA-lwrlingl-l', Millnr. fwnrl nuv, Kuff In rujhff Ku-urnuy, Shan, llummuncl, Cumplwcll, Buusluuglx, Hart- man, Link, Aungwt. .S'rmm1'rmv: Gruvc, Flnvsgan, Xlnxlonlgal, Uulznnccy, Alf Cnmllcss, Clzmr, Tester, Corbin, Tlnnl rm. llirlll, Hurguun, Uv.-cscy, llulmr, 'l'rrcxr, lullnstun, Rllmlcs, l'u11rlf11'.r,.'J Slwclmn, 5luy, Nvulhsrs, Nvcrlnlull. They sang in numerous assemblies, including the ones for Armistice Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Mixed chorus proudly sent eleven of its members to District Chorus at Huntingdon Ianuary 14, 15, and 165 twenty-one of the members were sent to County Chorus at Bell- wood March 5 and 6. All choruses at Hollidaysburg High School are under the direction of Miss Zoe Ross, Supervisor of Vocal Music in the Hollidaysburg Public Schools. At the end of the term mixed chorus could look back over an enjoyable and successful vear. MAIORETTES Seen strutting in front of the band this year were ten able high-stepping, fast whirling girls, our majorettes. The girls were led by the only senior and head majorette, Betsy Swope. Prac- ticing many hours, the girls perfected their intricate routines. At half-time, they performed little stunts, skits, and baton twirling to the band music for the football crowd's entertainment. Patty Weyant did a lighted fire-baton twirling act. The girls and their fancy steps were seen leading the band at parades throughout the year. Although lacking in members, the club entered into many Helds during the school year. Regular meetings were held every other lvednesday evening at 7:50 o'clock at the X'.M.-Y.W.C.A. The programs were very interesting and educational. Various men of the community gave talks on their particular occupations or hobbies. The club made a few field trips to the various armed forces buildings and reserve centers in the surrounding area. The club also sponsored a dance at the YU after one ofthe basketball HI-Y games. The dance was an enjoyable affair for those attending and a profitable evening for the Hi-Y club. The main purpose of the club is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the community high standards of Christian character. Their four main principles are: Clean Speech, Clean Sports, Clean Scholarship, and Clean Living. The club held a spring get together which was enjoyed by all those who attended it. An increased membership in the club next year will activate a greater interest in the community, and enrich the lives of those fellows who belong to the club. 51 1 3 m Cast of Ever Since Eve. The Council is composed of students who are elected by their respective homerooms. The Council meets to discuss the problems that arise throughout the high school. This allows the students to enter into the planning for the improvement of the high school. The students who enjoy the noontime dancing have the Student Council to thank for this. The Council also sponsored a dance after the Tyrone football game. The big dance sponsored by the Student Council this year was the Spring Frolic. Held in the month of April, it was a fitting climax to the many hours of hard work and planning which went into it. For the many absent-minded professors ofthe student body the Student Council ran the lost and found department. This depart- ment helps the students recover lost articles. Yet with all the improvements and enjoyments that the Student Council has brought to the school, they are still working hard to do some- thing special. ln the future years the school should certainly profit from the hard work of the Student Council. l fr.ri ruw, lijfl lu niuhlf Link, Harker Rightnour, Yventz, Troxell, Langham Shroyer, Kelley, Dodson, Kratzer Grove. These girls met the second and fourth Tuesday of every month during the 1955-54 term. Each meeting was conducted in a similar manner. It was opened with a devotional service, which was followed by a business discussion. The meeting was then turned over to the program chairman, who had many interesting speakers and several entertaining programs. The highlight of the year was the joint meeting of the Tri-Hi-Y and the Hi-Y. The program was a panel discussion of teen-age problems in which members of both groups participated. This year the club was faced with the age-old 60 problem of finding an adviser. Mrs. Lillian Kiesling, who started the year with us, was unable to finish. A tea was given in her honor. Her position was filled by two capable people, Bliss Nancy Graham and Mrs. Shirley lvhitfield. The various activities of the club were the entering of a Club Clippings Contest, a toy drive for under-privileged children, and a clothing drive for the needy people overseas. The club entered a float in the Halloween parade and sponsored the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance and a Yvinter Formal. For their own pleasure the girls went bowling, roller skating, and had a gym night. They closed the year with the annual weiner roast and banquet, both held in Nlay. lfinrl rmv, ld! The Cadets had many interesting programs at their meetings. One of their pro- grams featured Patty YVeyant and her baton twirling. Patty Shroyer also entertained them with a pantomine. For their social affairs, they had a hayride, and a swimming party. In February they sponsored a Valentine Dance, which required many hours of hard work to prepare. Besides these social projects the club bought books for the Veterans Hospital. During the year the members helped serve many banquets at the Y , YVhen working with fellow club members, anything could be turned into fun. Xve know the girls will keep up with the good work and attendance next year when they become members of the Tri-Hi-Y. This, the purpose of the 1955-54 Projection Club was successfully fulfilled by its members who met the first and third Thursday of each month. During the year, members learned to operate Bell Howle projectors, R. C. A. pro- jectors, strip film projectors, and wire recorders. These demonstrations were aided by the use of the projectionists manuals, ABC's of Visuals Aids , which were available to each member. However, all the club's activities were not in the field of learing. They sponsored dances 62 the December 18th and February 26th basket- ball games. These dances, which were enjoyed by the students, also aided the club in raising money. The club's other projects for the year included running the amplifier for school affairs, class parties, assemblies and dances. They also helped with the minstrel show at the Iunior High School. Allen Grifhth, the second batter in the last of the first, drove the ball out ofthe park to drive in the only run of the day. Yvith the 1-0 victory over Cove under their belts the Tigers finished off Tyrone 2-0. Then the Burg almost blew their changes. Com- mitting four errors, the Golden Tigers had to bang across three runs in the last inning to win 5--1. The final game of' the season showed H-Burg downing Vt'i11iamsburg 7-2 behind H. Mi11er's two-hit pitching. 1n the final analysis Bruce Fox and lim Hilling led Ho11idaysburg's batsmen with .-167 and .411 averages. lV1uch of the credit of the fine season must go to the pitchers, Snoberger and Nliller, who did excellent jobs. The Hollidayshurg High Thinclads, under Coach Bob Dively, were greatly handicapped hy lack of experience. Perhaps if home meets were scheduled, a greater interest would he shown for this sport. 'liheir first meet of the season was at State College in a triangular meet with State College and Tyrone. Hollidalvslmurg placed second hehind State College. Only two dual meets were held. The Thin- clads lost to Bellwood Antis 59M to 49M and lost to Huntingdon 68 to -ll. Against very stiff' competition at the annual District Six Track and Field Meet at Altoona, Hollidayshurg placed sixth. lay llelsel and Bill Benson hrought some honors buck to the school. lay Helsel tied for second place in the pole vault, and Bill Benson took fourth place in the shot put. To become a full pledged member of this organization one must earn fifty points by engaging in such athletic activities or sports as basketball, bowling, or tumbling. By devoting one hour to any major sport as basketball or bowling one is entitled to three points. Two points are earned for evertv hour spent in an-v minor sport as hiking, ping pong, or dancing. The president automatically receives lititeen points upon her election to otliee, while other otlicers gain ten points. The sports manager gets Hve points, and committee members, three. Students who participate in noontime intra- mural activities and those who are cheerleaders or majorettes are also entitled to points. Illegal absence from a G.A.A. meeting pena- lizes a student two points. The cost of tardiness is one point. Upon reaching a goal of 550 points a member receives a numeral, but it' she has earned 750 points, she is entitled to the letter II.,' The president receives a star, and if she has possessed a letter for one -vear, she is awarded a chevron. A member may not be absent from more than three meetings or more than four socials. Upon disregarding these rules a member's name is dropped from the roll. There is one social a month, and among those participated in this year are: September, Gym Night, October, Halloween Party, December, Bowling, Ianuary, Roller Skating, February, Swimming, Ixlarch, Bowling, April, Initiation and Nlay, a picnic.
