HAM1LL The most important single unit in my school system is the Hoard of ldducation. ln Hollidays burg, this is eertainly true. The IIlCII1l'JLI'S of the Board, being business and professionil men, ire well aware of the changing demands of our modern day civilization. They spend at hast ten hours each month seriously considering means of enabling Hollidaysburg schools to Hlltf these demands. For example, they have author ized a Driver's Education Course in the Senior High School. A new classroom and fi garage for the teaching of this course have been added to the High School. the future with confidence. The school tries to provide the experiences which will promote the growth of the individual. One might get the impression that teach- ing in the classroom is the only important place for pupils to gain experience. Subjects, textbooks, units and activities tend to call to mind classroom ex- periences. Recently, there was developed a general recognition that learning experiences other than class- room experiences havc educational value. The out-of-class activities of the school are well known. Athletics, musical events, clubs and publica- tions have interested both youth and adult. Assembly programs, safety patrols and Junior Red Cross have captured tl1e fancy of our younger groups. Where are the pupils getting their experience? In schools, of course. But what about the bus load of pupils leaving the county court house or the local factory? What about those pupils visiting the zoo or those boys working in the auto factory? Are they getting their experiences in school or out of school? VVe may say then, educational experiences are gained through classroom activities, out of class activities and scl1ool activities in the community. School walls are no longer lines of demarcation be- tween school and community activities. The modern school provides experiences for youth in many places, mostly in the school, but frequently away from school. The following pages of this book should give our readers an idea of the scope of contributing factors to education in 'l'oday's Schools. Supedntendent Straw and Shaw work diligently P r I n c i p a I 'Attention Please! GRIFF J ONES Principal The 1952-53 school year has been an outstand- ing one for Hollidaysburg. We have experienced some new situations which have been of great value in helping to develop us as individuals and as a school. The great records of the athletic teams have given the school an opportunity to show its ability to bc gracious winners. The new course in drivers education has proved to us that there is more to driving than just steering the car and shifting gears. The challenge given to the student body by Howard Davenport of the Bell System opened new horizons for which all may strive. John Dewey, the noted educator from Columbia University, once said, We learn to do by doing. Hollidaysburg High School endeavors to present a wide variety of experi- ences for you so that you may learn. The scholastic, social, and athletic programs are arranged so that each may become a well- rounded person. This went over with a bang, indicating that everyone thoroughly enjoyed himself. The Juniors gave their class play in March. Come Rain or Shine was a rollicking comedy, full of fun, with insight and warm affection beneath the merri- ment. The play was directed by Miss Williams and was very successful. They started practicing quite early in February, and were rewarded by the praise of their acting. I+lven before practice for the play began the Juniors were working on a theme for the Prom. When the theme was chosen, they went to work on decorations, favors, and all the small details to make the Prom in May a. big event for Juniors and Seniors alike. mlillwr' 4l lfwi ww. They were very active in all sports and were well represented in the band. They all entered into the swing of things from the start. The girls were not to be out done by the boys, so they, too, entered into intramural sports, chorus, :ind the noisy congestion of the halls. Along with spring came the class party for the Sophomores. Vonnty Uhorus was held in our school. Singers, representing schools from all of Blair Founty, assembled here on Friday, May l to practice for the concert which was given on Saturday, May 2. Susan Truhy, Alice Waite, Ciretchen Truby, Bonnie Meadows, lid Soyster, Max Uearhart, Wayne lflsh, Paul Meyers, l'Iric lilepser, and .lim Rhodes were chosen to he sent to District Chorus held in Clearfield. One student was elected to go to State Chorus at liittanning. All in all, our mixed chorus, under the excellent direction of Miss Dorothy McGregor, had a very successful year. The 1952-53 Blue Band could not have gotten along without the high-stepping feet of six majorettes: Jean Smith, Bonnie Hayes, Mary Brumbaugh, Betsy Swope, Sandra Kratzer, Sue Fox, and three Flag twirlers: Charlotte Mcliendree, Virginia Berkheimer, and June Iireiser. The definite signals given to the Blue Band at the exact second by head majorette Fonnie C'alvin were an important asset. In front of the band with twirling batons and fancy steps, these girls could be seen at parades and games at half-time throughout the year. To create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian Character. These words may be heard in the Y during the meeting of the Chimney Rocks Hi-Y Club. The newly formed Hi-Y Club, the first in Hollidaysburg for several years, is composed of high school boys who follow the four principles of the Hi-Y, which are: Clean Speech, Clean Sports, Clean Scholarship, Clean Living. The Hi-Y, under the guidance of John Woodcock Jr., has participated in several com- munity projects during the year. The members assisted the Salvation Army in their annual fund-raising campaign, and participated in the Hollidaysburg Mr-rchant's Christmas parade. The Hi-Y has enjoyed varied programs at the regular meetings. Business and professional men in many fields have spoken to the club. They have entertained the club by lectures on baseball, law, the armed forces, basketball, golf, and foot- ball. The members of the club have also enjoyed many social events among themselves. lt is hoped that the Chimney Rocks Hi-Y Club may continue to grow in H-Burg High in the future as it has in the past, I I - OFFICE RS President Ai.1.r:N Gmrrrrii Vice-President Hmmm' LEACH Treasurer Mmcei' flItIS'l'E Sefretary RON CHAMBEIQLAIN First row, left lo right: Kabella, Harpster, McClain, Cannarsa, Stultz, Jefferies, Hamill, Second You-.' Under the direction of Beverly Williams, the seniors produced a 'fsmash hit entitled And Came the Spring. The play was presented in the Junior High School Auditorium on December 11 and 12. And Came the Spring is the brightly humorous and straightforward story of the Hartmans, a pleasantly typical American family, who enjoy a reasonable amount of quiet and peace until Spring enters the scene-to stir the blood and lift the heart. On the first day of Spring Vacation, Midge, the youngest, finds herself surprisingly in the throes of first love. A charming and lovable hoydcn is Midgef complex, alive, and warmly human. She thinks nothing of starting whirlwinds or even tornadoes to impress casual, witty Buzz Lindsay, the young gentleman of her choice-'who is unluckily in love with older sister Virginia. Midge disrupts brilliant brother lClliott's carefully planned life as a writer of tragic novelsg she plays havoc with the hearts of several other young people, including a visiting New York glamour girl and a bashful boy who really cares for Midge herselffin short, the sanity and well- being of everyone concerned. However, by the end of the week the three Hartman children have taken important steps toward maturity, and their parents have learned a few things too. In each of the issues one could find an account of the various activities. lndividual sport events and also season records were given in each issue. Social functions were not neglected. The H-Burger carried full accounts of all parties, assemblies, noon-time activities, and the various school club programs. The paper was well represented by the Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors at the press conferences held at Claysburg and Altoona High Schools. The journalists sponsored the annual Valentine Ball, which was the highlight of the staff's social activities. The dance was held in the school gym- nasium on February sixth. The traditional Valentine's Day colors adorned the gym. Bill Heilmier's band furnished the music. The highlight of the ball was the crowning of the king and queen selected in an election supervised by H-Burger representatives. Queen Fonnie Calvin and King Edward Soyster reigned. Their Senior attendants were Bonnie Hayes and Bruce Fox. The Junior representatives were Bonnie liensinger and Marcy Criste. Representing the Sophomores were Ann Marie Denning and Scott Stultz. I hear we're having a speaker and a discussion on teen-age problems tonight. This is just one of the many things done by the Tri-Hi-Y Cadets, which is made up of girls in the sophomore class of school. The purpose of this club is to train the girls to have better Christian characters. For their social affairs, they have had a hay- ride, swimming party, popcorn parties, etc. Besides the social side of the club, there is the project side in which the girls made up baskets for gifts around Thanksgiving, visited many homes with their carols around the Christmas season, and repaired toys for needy children. liven these, when working with fellow club members, can be turned into fun. The purpose of the club is the training of the members to operate and make minor repairs to the projectors and other audio-visual equipment. The members, with the aid of the projectionist's manual entitled ABC's of Visual Aids, and an experienced projectionist, were able to become capable pro- jcctionists. The program committee, consisting of Jim Luther, Carol Brady, Glenn Clapper, and Donna Piper, planned the programs for the regular meetings. The programs varied from speakers to demonstrations of visual education equipment. Dues were paid each semester. At the beginning of the year, decals of the H-burg Tigers were sold. Some of the members had entries in the State Farm Show in Harrisburg, and a few of the boys received honorable mention for their exhibits in this show. The members will also participate in the Chicken of Tomorrow C'ontest which is held at Altoona in the Spring. On February 6, the F. F. A. held its annual assem- bly. The program consisted of demonstrations of various phases of farm work. Shortly after the beginning of the first semester, students of French desiring membership in the French Club selected their officers. The club continued the policy, of welcoming as members, students, past and present, familiar with the French language. Having on the club roster only nine veterans, it was necessary to brief the newcomers on the constitution and its provisions. Meetings were held in room eleven after school on alternate Mondays. Most of the business meetings were of short duration in order that the members could get better acquainted and use the language. The selling of personalized stationery and name labels was greatly encouraged as a way to supplement the dues paid by all members. It is hoped that the policy, begun last year, of having part payment for members' club pins come from the treasury, can be continued. The social event for the year was a Christmas party held jointly with the Spanish Club in the Home Economics rooms. The cuisine committee, com- posed of two representatives from each club, arranged for contributions of food in order that the treasury need not be diminished by the carte du jour. Yes, the Tigers of '52, with their 9-1 record, gave us a lifetime of thrills, chills, and spills in just ten games. The credit can be given to no one player, but to all of them combined. Straw, Sec-ly, King, Reed, Pringle, Benson, tiearhart, and Soyster dial an outstamling job on the line. These unheralded linesmen made it possible to have a winning season. The backs were Fox, Nash, Xletlinnis, Brennen, Hammaker, and Shaw. Quarterback, Bruce Fox, probably the best signal caller in Burg.: history, ran the team niagnitieently from the 'l' formation. .laek Nash, halt'-baek and the lPZllll,S leading.: scorer, performeil in top fashion as clicl all the backs. N Baslcethal Hollidaysburg's 1952 - basketball team brought glory to the school as a result of being the only undefeated class A quintet in the state. Uoach Ralph Harden's boys won seventeen consecutive games and the Mountain High League Championship for the second time in two years. The season's opener gave an indication of what was to come as the Tigers laced lCve1'ett 96-43. Roaring Spring fell 54-48, in a close one, and Bedford was the vietim of another Tiger scoring parade, 96-49. Altoona Fatholic proved to be stiff colnpetition as they were dropped, 80-69, in a thrill packed contest. Roaring Spring fell to the Tigers, 56-15. In the initial Mountain High League contest the Burg topped a good Huntingdon five, 50-40. liasy victims over Lewistown, Pliilipshurg, Tyrone, Mt. l'nion and Huntingdon followed as the Tigers continued their torrid pace. The Tigers easily subdued Beearria-C'oalport- lrvona in a non-league game, 72-28. The undefeated skein ol' the Burg continued as the defending ehamps rolled past Lewistown, Philipsburg, Tyrone and Nlt. l'nion for the second time. A final vietory over Altoona , Mu. 1lAan1aN Catholic, 53-38, concluded the first perfect. season in Hollidaysburg basketball history. As champs of the Mountain High League, the Tigers entered District 6 competition against, Lock Haven at Juniata College. Led by Bruce Fox's 18 points, the Burg won their eighteenth, 49-38. The district finals went to a taller Johnstown squad, 59-48. The Tigers displayed brilliant floor work and shooting in going down to their only loss of the season. Allen Griffith, the county's scoring champ, led all scorers with 18 points. The entire team was magnificient in their heart-breaking defeat. The Burg was handed their second loss by Lewistown, 56-42, but came back to rout Philipsburg, 48-11. Tyrone was dropped easily, while Mt. Union edged the Tigers 49-45. After easy wins over Huntingdon and B. C. I., the G-olden Tigers lost their second game of the season to Lewistown, 49-38. The jayvecs won their last four games to wind up a fine year. Philipsburg, Tyrone, Mt. Union, and Altoona Catholic were defeated in close, well played games. For the fifth consecutive year, the Hollidays- burg Tigers, led by Coach Harden, fought their way to the Blair C'ounty Baseball Championship. The Tigers started the excitement by shutting out Williamsburg 15-0. The next thrill came on Wednesday, April 30, when Ron Harris turned in a sparkling 7-1 no hit victory for the Alma Mater against Roaring Spring. The fifth straight victory came against Roaring Spring again when the Tiger nine hammered out fifteen hits for a score of 17-4. Number six came when the Tigers beat Cllaysburg 8-3 on the home field. Hollidaysburg was assured a first place tie by beating Williams- burg 3-1 on the W -burg field. The 10-1 victory over Cove High in the all- important last game gave the Tigers their fifth straight championship. Hollidaysburg finished the season with a record of eight wins and no defeats. The Tigers had ninety-five runs, ninety-four hits and sixteen errors. The pitching staff struck out 91 opponents and gave up only 15 bases on balls. Hollidaysburg placed third in the next meet at Huntingdon, with 28M points, but because of the many individual honors, this meet was perhaps the best of the season. Ray Wilt and .lay Helsel captured respective first places in the shot-put and high jump. Other place winners were: Joe Iieuhn, second in discus, .Iohn Hess, tied for second in pole vaultingg Bob O'Brien and John McNelis tied for second place in the high jumping event. The season was topped off by the coaches relay, a meet composed of relay teams picked by the various track coaches, and by the annual district YI meet, a regular track meet in which all the class A schools in the District participated. By participating for one hour in such sports as bowling, basketball, tumbling or archery, any one can earn three points. An hour's time spent in lesser sports such as hiking, dancing, hunting or ping-pong entitles a member to two points. Fifteen points are received by the president for her election to office, and ten points to other officers. Students participating in intramural sports earn points, as do the cheerleaders and majorettes. Fifty such points are required before you may become a member. For 350 points, numerals are given, and a girl with 750 points receives a letter HH . The president receives a star, and if a letter is possessed for one year, a chevron is awarded. A member may not miss more than three meetings a semester nor more than four soeials a year. If a member does not meet these require- ments, her name will be dropped from the roll. There is one special activity a month. Some of these that should he given speeial attention are: Gym night September ll, Halloween party October 31, Swimming party November 25, and skating January 28. arsity Club Nlumbers in action! GREENSBURG TYRONE ALTOONA, PA- The friendlier store for all the people Complimentr of A FRIEND 106 Craftsniansliip- The finer material things of life are made by a fusion of the baser elements of nature with human aspiration- which fnds expression in superior- Craftsmanship, A high tribute to human intelligence is that man can take a piece of clay and make of it a thing of beauty. In all of the processes of this transformation there must be a guiding mind, that mind itself is guided by aspirationfin the simpler processes, such as the mixing of clay with other materials, that aspiration is in its lower form, but in each successive endeavor a higher form is evident until the completed vessel reaches the hands of the artist for decoration. Here we have man at his best, creating beauty, that which there is no greater earthly endeavor. The thought or sentiment that guides his hands are the result of aspirationg the skill with which his hands Work is craftsmanship. Either would be ineffective without the other, when combined a thing of both beauty and utility results. We have chosen a clay vessel to illustrate this point, but these things apply to all else that can have an element of beauty. Printing is no exception. Skilled hands alone cannot produce the highest grade of printing. There must also be aspiration to do better what thousands do well. There must be a combination of natural talent, knowledge gained from experience and, of course, the necessary tools. Every printer has these in some degree. The difference between printers is the degree in which they have them. When they are present in a high degree, they result in beauty and useful printing. The extent to which we have them, has gained for us a high appreciation among many patrons. Gray Printing Company, Inc. DuBois and Falls Creek, Pennsylvania Printers ofthe 1953 Cliimroclq
