From the times of witches and sorcerers of ages ago until the present day's modern magicians, thoughts of magic have been scaring, exciting, and amusing people. Perhaps no one Egure has been more closely associated with the field of magic than the genie. Romantic stories of Aladdin and his genie ofthe lamp have been read and enjoyed by many people for many years. High school students do not find genies about their studies, nor do they employ any magic to succeed in their school life. Nevertheless, when school days have become a part of the past, the graduates of Hollidaysburg High will certainly find use for the genie and his magic. Upon the rubbing of the lamp, we find the genie will appear and unfold a story in words and pictures that will review days happily spent at Hollidaysburg High. That story is the 1949 Chimroclc and is reviewed by the genie on the follow' ing pages. Atlee C. llawn 'Z 1-. rv 'Y I' . . , ag .. T241 f ki A is - fuv vw 1 - . 3 W if 'Rig C if! When is the paper coming out? This question was asked of the HfBurger staff every month during the past year. The students who never fail to ask this question probably don't realize what all goes on before the school paper makes its appearance. Almost immediately after the paper is out, work begins on the next issue. New ideas and stories are thought up by the staff to make the paper more interesting. Long hours of hard work are put in by the editors and staff members. During the past year many new columns were added to the HfBurger. News about graduates in a column called Grad Tidings was added. Another column, called Klub Kapers, concerned the activities of the various school organizations. A new and interesting feature, Dear Diary, made its appearance at the beginning of the year. Editorials and HfBurgerettes added variety and interest to the paper. The Christmas issue made the season brighter when it was printed in the gay colors of the Yuletide season. Cartoons and comic strips drawn by Elizabeth Nale, staff artist, added originality and color to the various issues of the paper. The staff was very busy during the year adding to the finances of the paper. Members of the staff sold programs at the home football games. Pep buttons were also sold by the staff at the beginning of the football season. Several dances, held in the school gymnasium after the games, were sponsored by the HfBurger staff. The Press Conference held at Tyrone on November fourth found the school paper well represented. james Gromiller, sports editor was the leader of a discussion about the sports page. Mary Louise Reiser, editor, participated in another roundftable discussion. The fourth annual Valentine Ball, again sponsored by the H-Burger, without a doubt, was the highlight of the staff's social activities. The dance was held in the school gymnasium on February twelfth. The gym was beautifully decorated in the traditional colors of Valentines Day. Music was furnished by the Hollidaysburg High School Dance Band. joanne Keith and Floyd Hoenstine were the royal attendants from the junior Class. The Sophomore Class was represented by Donna Lindsey and joe King. Dorothy Godfrey and Ronald Fleck were chosen king and queen by the student body. Crownbearers, Barbara Boland and Robert Amis, preceded the king and queen as they knelt before their thrones. The coronation took place to the accompaniment of music by the Dance Band. Following the coronation ceremony, entertain' ment was given by staff members. Refreshments were served after the program was completed. On Wednesday afternoon April twentyfseventh the Hollidaysburg High School was host to the Blair County Scholastic Press Associations spring press conference. Each school chose a topic for discussion which was led by a student representative from that school. The speaker for the conference was Mr. Boyer of the Altoona Tribune. A program of enter' tainment was given by the staff of the HfBurger. During the year the HfBurger received two awards. The National Scholastic Press Association of the University of Minnesota awarded the paper its AllfAmerican Award. The paper also received a second place award given by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. . 51 F1rst roxx letto nght MISS K1racofe Fox HlIChlngS Ross All1son Donovan j Reifner Burk Zeth Thomas Dunn Second rovn Chmgos Hoover Harker Walter Cannarsa Cass1dy Godfrey Graham Calvert Bankert Thnrd rovx Hockcnherry Llndsey W1lt borsuch Elhott Smxth XVr1ght Benton M1eln1k jones Fourth rovt Fox Harman Re1ser Kelth Pr1ce L Reffner Bxce Llngenfelter Kucharek Dunkle F1fth row Gxhhon y XXJCISS Fyock hates Fletcher Maurer Mart Bender L Drass Kephart S1xth rovt Conroy M Drass breaser Deloz1er Croyle Ye kley Cummmgs Altmanshofer Counsman Scxtnth row Carberry Evans Saupp Fleck W1lt M1tchell Stormer A Drass Zeak Club Sponsors ance The members of the Tr1H1Y Club of 1948 49 spent lll 1ct1ve ye 1r pdI't1C1p'1C1l1g 111 m 1ny 1nterest1ng 1nd useful 11ct1x1t1es The club f-UITCIIOIIBJ under the le 1dersh1p of pres1dent Helen Chnwos XICC pres1dent M1rg1ret Elhot recordmg secret1ry Sue Fox correspondmg secret1ry CDTISIIITC l'TlI'IUlIl tre1surer Dorothy Godfrey llld 11dx1ser MISS Betty K1r1cofe Meetmgs were held exery Tuesd1y exenmg A NIll1Ll1l'lU Provram COIHIDICICE pl1nned 1ll the progr 1ms for the meetmgs The cha1rn1 111 of th1s COIUIUIUICC wx IS M1rd1ret Elhot Another COHTIHICIICC WIS elected to dr1w up the Club s c1lend1r for the ye 1r Its ch 11r1n Ill xx 15 Delores CUIUlH1l'lg5 The lllllklll b1d1e HlWkll1S Hoe Down Wlb held IH the h1 h school gym Bert Cr1ste llld PlUllI16 Ellenbcrger were chosen IN L1l Abner llld DIISY M 11. Week held at State College. jay Guyer and Fred Fornwalt were entered in the Poultry judging Contest, while james Diehl, Earl Cochran, Kenneth Wertz, and Clair Flaugh entered the Farm Mechanics Contest. Samuel Stoltz repre' sented the Hollidaysburg Chapter as otiicial delegate to this F. F. A. Convention. John Bice and james Diehl displayed their Berkshire gilts at the Bedford Fair, and placed high in the vocational class. Kenneth Young displayed his baby beef. Sixteen Greenhands were initiated into the Chapter. Also twelve members were advanced to Chapter Farmers. In the area Project Contest Donald Klein placed first in the small fruits, Kenneth Young, first in beef, Kenneth Wertz, first in corn, William Brumbaugh, third in dairy heifersg and Frank Snowberger, third in sweet corn. During the Area Banquet at Bedford, Kenneth Feathers gave a talk on the Area Project Contest. james Diehl was awarded the Keystone or State Farmers Degree. The award was made at the State F. F. A. They organized a basketball team which played a total of ten games with other chapters and with local teams. The Chapter presented an assembly program featuring correct parliamentary procedure. A baby chick group project was carried on at school. The Chapter attended an area leadership training conference in May. The conference was intended for the newly elected ofhcers of each chapter of the FultonfBedfordfBlair Area.
