FACULTY ADDS N W MEMBER Unlike the postwar year of 1919 when veterans returned from only one theater of war to serve on the Hollidaysburg faculty, the postwar years of 194647 brought veterans from the several theaters of warfare scattered all over the world. Three new faculty members and three former members composed the veteran hand at Hollidaysburg Senior High School. Emil Graf, a former member of the AntifAircraft Division of the Army, joined the staff as a teacher of problems of democracy. Mr. Graf served in Ireland, England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. Astor Ritter, the new physical education instructor for boys, served four years in the United States Navy. Most of his time in the service was spent in the Pacific Theater of war. Michael Beley, acting as inf dustrial arts instructor during the past year, also saw action in the Pacific Theater while in the Army Air Corps. The three former members who were in the service are Ralph Harden, Elliott Treese, and Miss Marian Helsel. the school nurse. With the Army Nurse Corps Miss Helsel saw active duty in England. Scotland, and France, and on leaves she visited Switzerland and Belgium. Mr. Harden hit Hawaii, Kwajalein. Eniwetok, Saipan, and Tokyo on his voyages with the Navy. Mr. Treese gave up his Army uniform for civilian clothes too soon to be sent out of the l'nited States. He was stationed in Texas and Qhio. Many stories were brought to the ears of the student body by these exservice people. These tales 14 helped the students to envisage the political and social conditions of the various other countries of the world. Postwar shifting brought four other new teachers here besides those already mentioned. joseph Gallagf her filled the vacancy createdas Howard Blake accepted a post at the University of Chicago early last fall. Mr. Gallagher teaches health and is the wrestling coach. Austin Bittle, a graduate of Dickinson College, teaches sophomore English and history in the place of Miss Helen Davis who now teaches world history. Miss Bonalyn Silknetter is the new adviser of the HfBurger and instructor of English, journalism, and public speaking. Miss Ruth jean Heasley of 'Zelienople entered the Riculty as teacher of Latin and French. This past year set the faculty off as sports enthusi' asts as they engaged in intramural volleyball and bowling. Norman Hoover was high scorer on the bowling team composed of Cecil Fox, Miss Charlotte W4ilkei', Astor Ritter, joseph Gallagher, and Emil Graf. ln the fall volleyball contests the men's faculty team outshone the boys' squads in two games by their skill and perseverence. The faculty participants were Mr. Chimente, Mr. Ritter, Mr. Bittle, Mr. Harden. Mr. Graff, and Mr. Treese. The first four members are school athletic supervisors. Due to inclement weather the annual fall getftof gether picnic was held in the school gymnasium on September 19. The faculty also held a banquet in the spring. Mr. Farley, center, demonstrates visual aids to Miss Mcllroy and Mr. jones. Mr. Graf, left, and Mr. Harden receive history lesson from Miss Davis. Miss Reed, center, explains pupil record chart to Miss Leamer, left, and Miss Silknetter. Faculty quartet accompanied by Miss Pickles prepares for assembly program Left to right: Fox, Treese, Hoover, Wensel. Mrs. Mclierihan, insert, smiles from Florif da as Mr. Beley, Miss Sullivan, center, and Mrs. Lantz discuss Pennsylvania weather. Mr. Chimente, standing, diagrams a new play for Mr. Bittle. Miss Walker, Mr. Ritter, center, and Mr. Gallagher discuss Phys. Ed. program. Dr. Bailor discusses health reports with Miss Casselherry, left, and Miss Helsel. Hollidaysburg High resumed baseball last year, after a three years lapse. The team was coached by Vincent Chimente. Although not too successful, it was a traditional fighting club. In the opening game the team was given a shellackf ing by a strong Altoona Nine by a 12f2 score. Then the local outfit edged out undefeated Alexandria' Petersburg 9f8 under the excellent pitching of Allen Smith. Through the combined efforts of moundsmen Tiernan and Smith, and a timely triple by Thompson, the team forced Philipsburg to bow to a 5f4 score. Poor fielding caused HfBurg to lose the second game to Altoona 13f5. Long distance hitting with men on base enabled Hollidaysburg High to overwhelm Alexandria by a 15f6 score. Due to a flock of errors, Catholic High won over the Burg Nine 13f4. Although George Walker batted a neat threefforffour, Hollidaysburg lost the final game to Philipsburg, 13f5. Girls Attend Clinic Last year the Hollidaysburg Senior High School aided in organizing the Girls' Basketball Clinic which was composed of four high schools in this areas! Bellefonte, State College, Philipsburg, and Hollidaysf burg. This Clinic has a twoffold purpose. First, to teach the girls the fundamentals of basketball, fair play, and good sportsmanship. Secondly, to enable the girls to participate in a series of interscholastic games so that they might put into practice the theories which they learn. The Clinic also provides a better opportunity for more girls to take part in sports. The games were held on Saturday and, since lunch and entertainment were provided by the host school, the day was appropriately called a play day. The entertainment consisted of educational exhibitions, dancing, singing, and relay races. The values of the Clinic and the reasons for desiring many more are various. Gatherings of this sort give each school a chance to compare the skills of its girls with those of other schools. Another important factor is the friendly relations fostered between the schools, and the broadening of personal acquaintances. The Hollidaysburg team was called the Girls' Honorary Varsity because its members were elected by girls on the school's intramural teams. Evangeline McNight was unanimously chosen as Captain of the s uad. q The first game was held March 9 with State College High School acting as the host. Here, the Hollidaysf burg girls won an easy contest over Bellefonte by a lopfsided 44f12 score. The second game took place at Hollidaysburg with the home team taking another victory over the Philipsburg lassies 30 to 7. On March 23 the team journeyed to Bellefonte to play the championship game with State College. The HfBurg team lost this game when State College pushed in the winning basket in the last seventeen seconds of play to win by a score of 16f14. Two teams called the Army and the Navy were made up of two guards and two forwards from each school. These teams played on the last day of the Clinic and the game ended in a 24f24 deadlock. The Girls' Honorary Varsity Basketball Team was organized and coached by Miss Charlotte Walker, Director of girls' Physical Education in the high school. Since the team has lost only two regulars through graduation, they have high hopes of winning the championship of the Clinic this year. Fvoclc, Hamill, Criswrll COUNCIL The group of representatives, which were elected at the beginning of the school year by the student body to serve on the Student Council, was very active during the past school year to solve the prob' lems which confront the students and to make their school life more than just striving work and study. The Council made the time pass more swiftly and pleasantly for the many students who spend their noon hours in the school building by present' ing to them the most extensive program of activities yet provided during the noonftime activities period. The football, volleyball, basketball, and pingfpong tournaments highlighted the program and gave many additional students an opportunity to engage in some form of athletic activity. Astor Ritter and Miss Charlotte Wzilker organized the boys' and girls' teams. During the one noon hour a week. set aside for dancing, most of the students hurried back to school so they could dance to the popular tunes provided. sometimes, by the dance band, under the direction cf Elliot Treese. and other times by records played over the school's public address system. The Student Council also sponsored many of the dances held in the gym during the football and basket' ball seasons. The school dance band played for these occasions. The Council sold candy and soft drinks 6-1 PLANS HA DBCCK during the basketball games and at the dances. The main project of the Student Council during the year was the planning and publishing of a school handbook designed to clear up many of the questions which arise in the minds of the students. It proved to be a help to most of the students in understanding the policies of the school. Before the Christmas holidays an ambitious com- mittee of Student Council members decorated the large Christmas tree in the main hall. The students gathered around it and sang carols. The point system, which has been developing for the past several years, was completed and will take effect at the beginning of the next school year. It will mean that a greater number of students will be able to hold offices both in the homerooms and in other school activities, A group of the Council members and the adviser attended the conference which was held at Hershey. Pennsylvania on October 26th and 27th. New ways of bettering student participation in school govern' ment were discussed. The officers for the group were as follows: Norman Clapper. President: Ted lllingsworth, VicefPres- ident1 Faye Hockenberry. Corresponding Secretaryt Betsy Elliott. Recording Secretaryg and -loy Kucharek. Treasurer. Clarence VJenscl was adviser of the group. Come and get your 1947 edition of the 'Chimrockf Comeferead your book and look at the pictures and remember one of the greatest times in your life e your high school days! Long hours of work had to be put into the book before it could be offered to you. The work really began in the spring of 1946. The selection of a theme was the primary concern of the entire staff. The qualifications were many. It had to be one which could be well adapted to school life, it had to be one which the art staff could work into bright and attractive drawings. The theme would have to Ht into the copy for the benefit of the associf ate editors and it had to be a theme which was practical. All these points had to be considered. The Circus, with its blaring bands, wild animals, and funny clowns struck a harmonious chord which resulted in the selection of The Circus as the theme. Splendid headway was made in the preparation of the dummy , The art staff spent many long hours working upon the division pages and the circus characters which appear throughout the book. The advertising staff put forth an extreme effort in soliciting ads from the business firms of Hollidaysburg and Altoona. It was through their effort and the cooperation of the advertisers that the staff has been able to edit the type of book presented. The writers were prodded to meet the deadline and they kept the typists busy transcribing copy. It was now up to the sales department to do their job. Novemf ber 15 had been set as the subscription deadline and the staff watched with a feeling of anxiety as the daily reports were turned into our Business Managers. The goal of 450 books was exceeded by a gratifying margin. The efforts of the staff, however, could not have developed our book into the finished product if it had not been for the leadership of Griff jones and Miss Goldie Kunkle. HBURGER MAI TAINS OFFICE Amid the confusion of typewriter noises, slammed drawers, and the hubfbub of many people talking at once, emerged the HfBurger at regular intervals during the past year. Under the direction of Miss Bonalyn Silknetter, advisor, and Donald Bice and Faye Hockenf berry, editors, the staff published eight editions. This year the HfBurger maintained an office where staff members could work after school and occasionally during school hours. In this office were kept copies of all previous editions, a file of work done and to be done, a large cabinet of writing supplies, and a com' plete record of each student. In the courtesy issue of the HfBurger many common discourtesies which were prevalent throughout the high school were discussed by both the paper staff and the student body. This edition was published in conjunction with the courtesy campaign conducted by the Student Council. Upftoftheminute classroom humor was shuttled into the Sneakin' Round column. All the classes from P. O. D. to Chemistry were polled for funny incidents. Short stories and original poems were received from the student body for publication. Comic strips were introduced into the HfBurger the past year. Eugene Hamill, staff artist, prepared the original comic strips used by the HfBurger. In November, 15 members of the staff attended the Blair County Scholastic Press Association Conference at Keith junior High School in Altoona. The dis' cussion of the editorial page was led by three staff members from Hollidaysburg, Faye Hockenberry, Donald Bice, and Evangeline McNight. Take one, it's free! If you like it, buy the rest. That was the thought behind the subscription cam- paign as subscription blanks were sent to members of the Class of 1946 and other Alumni. Many of the group subscribed. Well, that plan worked, now let's go all out for the Valentine Ball. This was the attitude of the business staff after their successful subscription cam- paign.
