Some we remember better than others, such as that important game we wanted so much to win, our first school dance, the class parties and picnics, the thrill of being a senior, and at last the wonderful feeling of accomplishment when that coveted diploma is placed in our hand. To help remember these special moments, we present to you, the student body of Holliday High School, the 1962 Eagle. Mrs. Thornton, you have helped us many times with library assignments, and your art work has been a source of pleasure to us on many occasions. The scrapbook of our activities which you have kept through the years indicates a sincere interest in the students of Hol- liday, and our first Future Teachers Association with you as sponsor has been a complete success. They have spent many ex- tra hours doing this because they hoped to please other students and the people of the community with the re- sults. Their work has shown that they were capable of accepting responsibility and that they were willing to give more than is required of the usual student. Any teacher who has lost faith in the modern teenager has only to sponsor a yearbook to regain it. l have truly ap- preciated the work of each staff member. Staff Sponsor, Ethel R. Fisher Rickey Welch, an outstanding sophomore, was our best salesman for 1962. We do not know the secret of his suc- cess, but each staff member has a different guess. Carolyn: Hasn't it though? l'm trying to get all of our old class- mates together for a reunion. You haven't heard from any of them have you? Nancy: Yes, a few. R'Dean has opened a cigar factory in Holliday. She seems to be doing very well. l suppose you know about Sue Stone. She took over Jerry 's place in the FBI. Right now she's tracking down a gang of smug- glers. Carolyn: Yes, I got a letter from her last week, She told me that Jerry Schoonover moved to Greenwich Village. He's giving Burf and Bongo lessons to the Beatniks. Also, I saw Dwain Dicker- son 's picture in a movie magazine last week. He has taken Chubby Checker 's place making jerk records. He's called Dobie, King of the Jer. Nancy: Not Dwainll He 's as successful as Sammye Askins. Sammye now has his own traveling medicine show. He sells Dr. Askins Cure-All Tonic. Oh, you remember how bright Gary McDaniel was don't you? Well, he has devised a new way to shoot pool - with a slide rule. Carolyn: He always said he'd master that game. We have a few other celebrities among our class of '62, Jane Crow has recently opened in London at the Paladium. She 's portraying Ceelie in the hit Hillbilly Weddin'. Frances Renner is now touring with the Metropolitan Ballet Com- pany as the star performer. She is known as crazy legs Renner, in the USA. Nancy: Linda Wallace phoned me last month. She wanted me to be sure to watch for her performance on the Ted Mac Origi- nal Amateur Hour. She is going to play Some-body's Everybody's Fool on a banjo and call hogs at the same time. Oh, yes, Kay Riddles is now the assistant manager of the Ft. Clark Guest Ranch. I can't understand why she went back. You remember good ole' Wayne Roberts don 't you? Carolyn: Of course. He was taking a course in mechanics. Nancy: Well, he finished it and opened up a wonderful garage. He was doing splendid until he was asked to overhaul a Stutz Bearcat. He owns a junk yard now. Carolyn: Isn 't that strange? I suppose you heard about poor Guy Cowden didn't you? Nancy: No, what happened? Carolyn: He became a chemical scientist and created a substance that eats through anything! But he 's going out of his mind trying to find something to keep it in. Linda Campbell has really risen in the education world. She 's now the librarian at Holliday High School. Nancy: She al- ways was such a quiet, reserved person. Andy Dick has a daily article in the newspaper. It's called Andy's Advice to the Heartbroken Lovers. Carolyn: Guess what Chris White is doing? She finally learned how to play something besides Chop Sticks on the piano. She got a letter from Liberace asking her to sign a partnership contract. l heard that Mike Morgan is now a missionary in Darkest Africa. Such a dedicated person. Nancy: You remember how musical Billy Craddock was don't you? Well, he is now playing the flute with the Philharmonic Orchestra. Jackie Robertson is famous, too. He 's now the star performer of the Harlem Globe Trotters. Carolyn: You know, Carolyn Harmon must have really learned a good deal in Mrs. Hook's English Class. She gave up everything to become an English major. She now teaches at Yale University. Nancy: Necie Liggett is getting ready for the big race at Indian- apolis on Memorial Day. Necie leaves her job as Professor of archeology at Princeton every year to take the grand trophy at this great race. Glynda Tammen is the new athletic coach at the Ft. Worth Zoo. She 's teaching the chimps how to play football. Carolyn: I saw Wanda Davis and Phyllis Ford last Thursday night on T. V. They are now the World 's Champion Lady Wrestlers. Nancy: I'm really proud of Lynn Moss. He's now a psychiatrist. Carolyn: He always was such an alert and wide-awake person. Where's Roy Don Hoing now? Nancy: I heard that Roy Don gave up his job as forest Ranger when the manager of Kiddy Land offered him a steady job playing an Indian at special parties. Well, I suppose that 's all. Oh, by the way, Carolyn, what are you doing now. Carolyn: Well, I found IBM calculators to be very dull, so I switched to bird watching in Central Park. How about you. Nancy: Because of my quiet nature, I decided that the only thing I could do was be a social counselor at the White House. It 's very interesting work. Well, Carolyn, I'm certainly glad you dropped by. It 's been so nice finding out about all of our classmates. Carolyn: Well, I really must rush. I've got a lot of planning before the reunion. W. This is the last will and testament of the seniors of 1962. We give to our dear teachers, who have been our instructors in all wisdom of the ages, a sweet and unbroken succession of restful nights and peaceful dreams. Mrs. Maggie Simpson Solomon Perkins and Family PEOPLE, PLACES, AND THINGS With H. M. fPapj Simpson This page is offered as a tribute to my mother and to women teachers in general. Before 1902 Holliday had never had women teachers, although many patrons favored using them. In 1902 two trustees who believed in women teachers were elected and soon afterwards my mother, Mrs. Maggie Simpson, was given a contract to teach five months at 345. O0 per month. When she learned of heated arguments and hard feelings the move had incurred, she offered to hand the contract back unsigned. However, John Solomon Perkins, who is pictured with his family was one of the newly elected trustees and he refused to let her return the contract. He held to his firm belief that women were often better qualified to teach than men. The two older boys pictured attended school with Maggie Simpson as their teacher, but the family later moved to Channing, Texas. Many changes have taken place in the sixty years since this incident. There are probably two women teachers to each man and educational requirements for both men and women are much higher. Maggie Simpson's education was limited, but she did attend Marionville Collegiate Institute in Missouri and minutes from that institution show that she was once a member of the literary society called Beta Zeta. Older people in Holliday will remember that after retiring she ran the old Holliday Hotel and those who knew her best will testify to her indomitable spirit. JOE E.
