Likewise, our spirits have emerged and grown. What started out as a small seed has grown into a young plant. But our spirits are still not fully grown. It takes a lifetime for our spirits to grow to maturity. But Holland Patent has given us the tiny seed of spirit and helped us to develop it into the frail plantg we have a good beginning. 2 . f

Qbur Hemi . . . On April 4, 1937, the Holland Crest was adopted by the Holland Patent Seniors. This crest has become the offical em- blem ofthe Holland Patent School. The crest comes from the coat of arms of Lord Holland who was granted a patent of land from the English crown known as the Holland Patent. The lamp of knowledge is at the top ofthe crest, symbolizing the quest for knowledge. This crest also symbolizes some of Holland Patent,s past. The maple tree represents one of our early industries of sugar and syrup making. The crown repre- sents our English heritage. On the rural roads ofthe surrounding Holland Patent area, there are still a few old school houses that stand today as a reminder of our past. Some of them, such as the Floyd Cen- tral and Marcy District Number Four Schools, were bought and remodeled into homes when in June 1934, Holland pat- ent School centralized, uniting twenty-four districts into one central system? There were times of hardship in these little schools. There were times when school was only open a few weeks out ofthe winter because of lack of money. Some schools required each student to supply a certain amount of wood each winter. Teachers, as well as pupils, were scarce. But despite these hardships, school was taught, and children learned. i E I i www ,J--- A' 4 J'
