The crest comes from the coat of arms of Lord Holland who was granted a patent of land from the English crown known as the Holland Patent. The lamp of knowledge is at the top ofthe crest, symbolizing the quest for knowledge. This crest also symbolizes some of Holland Patent,s past. The maple tree represents one of our early industries of sugar and syrup making. The crown repre- sents our English heritage. On the rural roads ofthe surrounding Holland Patent area, there are still a few old school houses that stand today as a reminder of our past. Some of them, such as the Floyd Cen- tral and Marcy District Number Four Schools, were bought and remodeled into homes when in June 1934, Holland pat- ent School centralized, uniting twenty-four districts into one central system? There were times of hardship in these little schools. There were times when school was only open a few weeks out ofthe winter because of lack of money. Some schools required each student to supply a certain amount of wood each winter. Teachers, as well as pupils, were scarce. But despite these hardships, school was taught, and children learned. i E I i www ,J--- A' 4 J' ,f f .Wg .3 , W 5 5 Qbur resent . . . Our present group of students have emerged from this his- tory of one-room school houses into modern, centrally heated schools. Likewise, our spirits have emerged and grown. What started out as a small seed has grown into a young plant. But our spirits are still not fully grown. It takes a lifetime for our spirits to grow to maturity. But Holland Patent has given us the tiny seed of spirit and helped us to develop it into the frail plantg we have a good beginning. 2 . f O O O Qbur illuture JR s A N .. ,:, ,MW W With the close of the first century of graduates from Hol- land Patent, the hundredth graduating class would like to wish the new century of graduates a good beginning. The class of 1979 hopes that the new century of graduates will continue to uphold the ideals and standards of pride, integ- rity, scholarship, and spirit that have made Holland Patent great for the past one hundred years. f X ga 4 54 'Z 45 ,, , Q W ,ag Q3 i ,N Q5 ,gi .. 0 'Z' , .WU Q- Wg, M A,:,., V Z Q? In Appreciation i Of. Miss Pawlick attended Sauguoit Valley High School before going on to Mohawk Valley Community College. She graduated from Oneonta State College with a degree in Secondary French Education and Spanish. In her Senior year of college. she spent a sem- ester in France attending school and traveling. Miss Pawlick came to Holland Patent in the fall of 1977 and has since acquired two grey hairs and a desire for an early retirement at age 35. However, these setbacks have not discouraged her from being active in school affairs. She presently coaches Boys, Junior High Swimming and has coached cheerlead- ing, the A.A.U. swim program, and co- directed the Junior and Senior Plays.. In recognition of her contributions, the Class of 1979 expresses its appre- ciation to Miss Judy Pawlick. me ,M on XX 'iw SX 4: 4 4 X s STITTVILLE, THIRD GRADE, 1968-69. Row 1: J. LeClair, R. Yet days go by and weeks rush on, And before I know it a year has gone And I never see my old friends face For life is a swift and terrible race. . Aaron K. Rotach March 8, 1961-March 1, 1976 Autumn Autumn is not just a word. Autumn is the southbound bird. It's not a phrase that people say But is the smell of fresh cut hay. Itis the dancing of leaves to the ground Leaves of crimson, gold and brown That make a carpet for the ground It's the time of crisp cool air The time for all the sleeping bear. Autumn is the type of thing That makes me want to sing Of the blessings that God does bring. Autumn is the time to say That winter's near and on the way. Aaron Rotach Tomorrow I say Illl call on him To show him our friendship has not grown dim. But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes And the distance between us grows and grows. Around the corner, yet miles away And now I mourn-a friend died today Thatls what we get when comes the end Around the corner, a vanished friend. -Charles H. Towne 4,6 3 n WK M ,ent 1 Jeffery S. A.F.S. Works toward this goal by sending students from the U.S. to many foreign countries and hosting thousands of foreign students each year. A.F.S. sponsors three different programs for American high school students-the Domestic Program which sends students for one semester to a different state, the Summer Program which sends students to a foreign country for two months, and the Win- ter Program, whose participants spend one year in a foreign country. Holland Patent is fortunate to have an active high school chapter that con- tributes time and money toward mak- ing our program a success. AFS Club. Row 1: C. Pape, C. Wells, D. Titus, C. Cedar- burg is the name of this quaint town in which I have lived for the past five years. The town has many things to offer stemming from the Olden', days. Many of the restaurants and shops express the sweet-smelling at- mosphere of Old Cedarburg. In fact, the government of Cedarburg puts stress on the restoration and utiliza- tion of most of Cedarburg's past re- sources. Although Cedarburg is nos- talgia minded, it is growing more to- wards a now attitude which I feel it needs. I'm very glad that I have been able to share in this area of New York and feel a bursting of growth inside as a re sult of this experience. Sue Sellers Walk,Together, Talk Together and There Shall Be Peace there. I canlt. Dear Friends, I was fortunate enough to receive an A.F.S. Scholarship which allowed me to spend a year in such a warm, homey community like Holland Patent. I am from the island of Barbados, which is situated in the Caribbean. This wonder- ful year began for inc on August 8th, 1978, when I left Barbados and flew by jet to J.F.K. airport. Along with other students from all parts ofthe world, I spent a few days at C.W. Post College on Long Island before traveling by bus to Syracuse where I was greeted by my family for the year. Trying to sit down and describe my stay in Ellsworth, Maine is more diffi- cult than it would seem. Ellsworth is so similar to yet different from Hol- land Patent that a comparison would be impossible. Still that is what most people ask me to do: compare here to My understanding of A.F.S. is so clear now. It isn't only an exchange of culture or values but a learning how to be open to any new experience. It isn't only how to live with different life styles but how to reflect these life styles in your own. -Sarah Barnes- itwv 2. There were many things that I encountered at Holland Patent that were different. The school was much larger than what I was used to and the courses and system of teaching were a bit different. In sports there were many new games that I was introduced to but I thoroughly en- joyed them all. In Barbados there is no snow so I saw snow for the first time in my life. It was beautiful! I learned to ski and experienced Thanksgiving. I visited several other parts of the United States and enjoyed the experience of camping, There were also many A.F.S. weekends which I enjoyed very much and several other functions put on by A.F.S. During the year I also visited many scenic areas and learned a great deal about the history of the United States. There is so much I could say and so many people I could thank for making my year a success that there is not enough room in this book. In closing I would like to thank a few of those people. I would like to thank the staff of Holland Patent who have been patient with me and very helpful to me. I would like to thank all of the pupils of Holland Pa- tent who have been me to enjoy my year and I would like to thank my host family for the year, the Kowalskis. for making me part of their family and my sister Amy for all she contributed to make me feel more like a sister and a part of the family. Thank you all. Sincerely, Ricardina 141 PEP CLUB. Row li A. Kraeger, B. Edick, C. Johnson, T. Ernst, C. Durant. Row 2: B. Putnam, J. Coe, R. Come, S. Davis, C. Ernst, L. Ueltschi. Row 3: K.
