Due to the fact several quit and some moved to other districts, only thirty of the original f number remained at the end of our first high school year. Some f disliked the work that was necessary to make passing grades. l In spite of the handicap of being 'green', I think we all had I fun during our freshman year. Although we couldn't have a class party, we took the bus and went to the skating rink at Blythe- ' ville. All of those who went had a swell time including the ones who were rather sore the next morning, but that was expected. 3 To add to the fun the freshmen presented two short skits for-our assembly. One was about the sailor who, with all his promising Q luncheons coming up, had to leave. The other was a humorous G negro wedding with Parson Byassee officiating. The class of- Q fioers elected for l9LL and'b5 were as follows: 3 President-- ----------- Billy Joe Howell ,I Vice President ----- Mary Alice Pritchard Secretary ------------- Maggie Nell Davis 1 Treasurer ------------ Billy Joe Gatewood I Reporter ---- ------------ Bobble Tompkins 1 Our ki and ueen were Bill Joe Howell and Bett Jane Edl ton if D8 Q Y Y D8 - We were proud to have the basket ball queen, Betty Jane Edlngton, in our class. We thought it was quite an accomplishment to have a 'freshman' chosen. Neither were we left behind at the end of the year when the awards were presented to the honor students. Mary Alice Pritchard was awarded the dramatics metal for her out- standing part in the senior play. Bill Avis was given the agri- culture award. Ranking high in the Southeast Missouri Scholastic meet ln mathematics, Ralph McCrary was given the award as the outstanding mathematics student ln high school. The outstanding student of our freshman year was Maggie Nell Davie, whom we lost at the beginning of our sophomore year when she moved to Michigan. Of our original class we now have only twenty-five students left to try to complete the task and become graduates in 19b9. Those of us remaining are quite glad we stuck it out during our first tough year. Just think what fun it is to be able to laugh at another class of 'green freshmen'. We can see that the en- tire class has improved since last year. Mr. Higdon, our sponsor, has changed us for the better. We thought it was tough to give up the long established habit of having those loud conversations in home room. But think of the result. We have a rating of se- cond place since they started checking us during home room period. Naturally we don't expect to get first place because there must always be a class of 'dignified seniors' in school. We have ten members of the basketball squads in our class. Our interests don't stop with sports. Some of our students are interested in other activities such as band, dramatics, pep squad, glee club, etc. We also have among us the secretary-treasurer of the Stu- dent Council and Captain of the Ball Monitors, Billy Joe Gate- wood. we want to graduate together, but if some of our students don't become more interested in history, or history doesn't be- come easier, we might leave some of our classmates behind next year. We hope that this doesn't happen. I .,. ..s,-,... fp.. -s. ,- .'? .... '-jfs? f5.....u W -'.-.1-.V vs ,FTM f -.X 2 t ,A , 7251x- ' aiu, ,,, .-A.. ,, usb: .ff H W ,. .,.T15o I p ss. ...,.1..-..
