Our Dutch swimmers finished the season with a perfect 16-0 dual meet record, captured the regional title, and placed Sth in the state meet. This improvement was seen in the indivi- dual runners as well as in the overall team record. The team had a G6 sea- son record, placed 7th in regionals, and was the Ottawa County champ. Frank Yarde, the team's number 1 runner, placed 15th in regionals and qualified for state competition. One of the highlights for this yearis team was being victorious over Holland Christian for the first time in 7 years. Co-chairman Kim Douma and Barb Feininger, assisted by sub-chairmen, organized the week of activities including the two powder puff games. First the Sophs. defeated the jrs. with a score of 8-6. Then the Soph. vs. Seniors game with the Seniors on top. Also a bonfire sponsored by Varsity Service Club, a pie-eating contest with the court members, and a reception for the court. Friday there was a pep rally along 8th Street featuring bands, floats, the court, and a cheering crowd. At half time coronation took place and after the game there was a dance in the fieldhouse. A. The week was planned and organized by committees with Nancy Dirkse serving as chairman. The com- mons were decorated. Throughout the week each ward collected food for a food basket to be donated to a needy family. There were out- door activities planned also. These included: a tug-of-war between the classes and a dog-sled race. A bakesale was held featuring Christmas goodies. The grand finale of the week was a dance marathon held on Saturday. Fourteen couples participated in the marathon and 15 of them finished 4 dancing 14 V2 hours. The couples were judged during the last half hour to determine the winners. The Senior class theme was Memories, the junior's theme was Wild Wild Vlfestj' and the Sophomore's theme was Space 2079 The Senior class members were the victors of the week's activities with the junior and Sophomore classes following, respec- tively. Student Council donated to the American Cancer Society, 3231.00 which was made from selling links for the Spirit chain. They are either in Symphonic or Concert Band, Symphonic Band being the highest. Students wishing to be in Symphonic Band must audi- tion. Both bands combine in making the Marching Band. They march at all the home football games, Tulip Time, and various other parades. The bands present three concerts each year and also participate in the competition at festival. A. The Holland High School Vocal Music Department has four different groups. They are Concert Choir, Madrigal Ensemble, Men's Glee Club, and Woman's Glee Club. Concert Choir is a select mixed group. Athletic Sisters Malte the Games Sweeter Every fall six girls are chosen from each class to serve as athletic sisters. They sell candy, popcorn, and pop at all the home football and basketball games. The girls also sell at some gymnastic and wrestling meets on Sat- urdays. Fun and Adventure Expedition Club is open to all stu- JJ' dents interested in experiencing the outdoors. The group schedules several activites every month. In Sept. there 1 was an initiation picnic at Ottawa 'Ng Beach and also a Saturday spent at the Battle Creek Outdoor Center. The month of October featured a Drown- proofing and Canoe Safety course at the Community Pool, a bike ride and hiking at St. Augustine, cleaning up litter in the Allegan Forest, and a weekend canoe trip along the Pere Marquette at the Forks. In November, the club sponsored a dance and a com- pass hike in the Allegan Forest. There was a cross-country ski clinic at the Outpost in December, and in january the club went cross-country skiing at Riley Street trails. These dancers, along with several other groups, participated in a parade for President Ford in Grand Rapids. They've also appeared at various shopping centers for art and ethnic dance shows.
