BASKETBALL Although having only four returning letter men this year, the Dutch cagers displayed some fine basketball throughout the season. The season began with a nip and tuck game with Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills in the Civic Center with the Indians winning 48-44 in the closing minutes of the game. Oddly enough, one of the highlights of the season was a defeat by Kalamazoo in the second game of the year, which might have resulted in the biggest upset this year in state high school competition had the Dutch won. Holland completely outrplayed and out-maneuvered Kalamazoo for the first three periods of the game and most of the fourth, only to have the Maroons make a terrific come-back in the late stages of the game to win. The team this year was composed of six seniors and six juniors, which should provide some good material next year for Coach Robert Connell, who is replacing Coach Fred Weiss, following the latter's resignation this year. SENIORS There were six seniors on this year's team, of which, four were the only returning lettermen from last year. These four, Center Tom Aye, Forwards Dave Hilbink and Les Overway, and Guard Rog Plagenhoef, along with junior Guard Bill Tornovish, rounded out the starting berths this year. Forward Hilbink, leading scorer, was chosen Captain of the 1956-1957 season. FORWARDS AND CENTERS This part of the team this year consisted of four seniors and three juniors. The important height aspect was on our side, since the forward wall averaged well over six feet. All played the backboards well and displayed much determination during contests with opponents throughout the year. First Row: Clayton Rice, Gary Gibbons, Larry Alderink.
