Co- captains Ken Hill and Verne Teske were brought up to the Varsity, while nine boys were sidelined more than half the season by injuries. They finished the season with a 1 - 7 record, having lost games to Muskegon Catholic, Muskegon Heights, Fennville, Grand Haven, St. joe, Grand Rapids South and Benton Harbor. Loy Lovitt, coaching his Hrst season at Holland High, kindled a great deal of enthusiasm in the boys. Mr. Lovitt came to Holland from Tampico, Illinois where he coached football. Mr. Lovitt was assisted by Bill Noyd who is spending his 2nd year at Holland.

BASKETBALL Although having only four returning letter men this year, the Dutch cagers displayed some fine basketball throughout the season. The season began with a nip and tuck game with Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills in the Civic Center with the Indians winning 48-44 in the closing minutes of the game. Oddly enough, one of the highlights of the season was a defeat by Kalamazoo in the second game of the year, which might have resulted in the biggest upset this year in state high school competition had the Dutch won. Holland completely outrplayed and out-maneuvered Kalamazoo for the first three periods of the game and most of the fourth, only to have the Maroons make a terrific come-back in the late stages of the game to win. The team this year was composed of six seniors and six juniors, which should provide some good material next year for Coach Robert Connell, who is replacing Coach Fred Weiss, following the latter's resignation this year.
