Student Euunlzil Many of the lasting memories of the 1955-56 school year were provided for us by the Student Council. Under the leadership of Mayor john Stryker and their advisor, Mr. Buchanan. the Council carried out a successful year filled with many worthwhile and enjoyable activities. XY'e will all remember such Council sponsored activities as the coronation with the theme Autumn Leavesng the Blues in the Night, the semi-formal danceg Dutch Treat XY'eek and its appropriate theme, Seventh Heaven. The Council was also engaged in such activities as the selling of football programs, the collection of money for the Salvation Army and the City Mission, helping Mr, Rie- mersma with the curriculum study, and revising the Constitution of Holland High School. Co-Fditor Ruth Walters Announcer Roy Kramer and Herald of the Air Advisor, Mr. Bill Gargano Ilerald The Herald Staff is a very industrious group which brings our news about school to us in an edition published every three weeks. Under the able assistance of their advisor, Mr, Robert Chard, the 1955-1956 Herald Stal? published the most professional paper ever. The reporters not only covered so completely each news item, sport story, and feature but also supported two of the biggest senior projectsg namely the Magazine Campaign and the Senior Play. It's wonderful to look back and see how the fine work of the whole staff kept us informed on our Student Council, Police Court and Library. Our thanks go to the co-editors Ruth Walters and joan Tellman and also to the whole staff for a great paper. Enaizhas and Captains Our Big Dutch football team's campaign this year, was a successful one. Headed by our three coaches, Dale Shearer, Mr. William Hinga, and Mr. Ernest Post, and our co-captains Ron Van Dyke and Bill Buis, our team finished the season with a very respectable 5-5-1 recorded. To this year's coaching staff, two new members were added. Witlu these additions, our coaching staff was well rounded. Mr. Hinga attended this high school, playing football and basketball. He continued his education at Hope College. After attending Hope College. Mr. Hinga coached at Belding for one year before going into the Army. After serving two years Mr. Hinga came back to Holland and was coach of our reserve team for one year before taking over his present position as backheld coach in the varsity. Our line coach Ernest Post also attended Holland High School and played football here. Mr. Post then went into the Navy under whose plan he attended Alma, U. of M. and Hope Colleges. He then coached for a short time at Constantine before taking his present position in Holland as our varsity line coach, This years coaching staff was again headed by our head coach Dale Shearer. Coach Shearer has been with our school for four years and has done a wonderful job with our school football teams. He came to our school from Quincy High School in Quincy, Michigan where he was head football coach. There were two more bright factors on this years varsity football team. They were the outstanding leadership of our two co-captains Ron Van Dyke and Bill Buis. Both Ron and Bill were full of fight, and team spirit both on and off the held. Ron Van Dyke was brought up from the reserves to the varsity in his sophomore year and played lirst string halfback all his three years in high school. In his junior year Ron received honorable mention on the All-State team and this year was voted to the All-State second string. He was also placed on the allearea team. Ron was hon- ored by his teammates by being chosen as the most valuable player on this years team. Bill Buis was also brought up from reserves in his sophomore year and saw a lot of action on the line dur- ing his three years in high school. Bill was very much liked by all his teammates which made him a good sparkplug for our team, Bill also received honors on many of our state newspaper sports polls. Although our team was up against a very rough schedule, they entered each game with a going to win attitude. These three factors made our team outstanding this season. Our season consisted of wins over Grand Haven, Dowagi- ac, St. joseph, Benton Harbor, and Ottawa Hills. Our three losses to Muskegon Heights, Grand Rapids South and Grand Rapids Creston were by a total of only twelve points, and our 1-l-14 tie with Niles was the only black spot on their schedule this season. This year's roster included 25 seniors 14 juniors. Our starting lineup consisted of nine seniors and two juniors, with a very promising group of juniors entering the lineup very frequently. Our team boasted a very good second string at most of the positions, which helped many times in the late stages. as well as throughout the entire game. Line Men Our line this year averaged about 190 pounds. Although many of the linemen tipped the scales at nearly 200 pounds. most of them could move at a very good speed. lt was this speed and weight that made our forward wall strong, Baclsfield Experience was a big factor in our backfield this year. Except for our quarterbacks, our backfield was made up of seniors who saw varsity action in their sophomore year and played first string last year. Experience, speed, and weight made this years backheld outstanding. Our team started the season playing very well, defeating Ottawa Hills. With eight of the nine returning lettermen being seniors this year, the lineup was well balanced and experienced. Head Coach Ned Stuits was helped tremendously this year with the addition of Mr. Post to the baseball coaching stuif. This addition gave Coach Stuits more time with his starting line-up, while Coach Post worked with the new recruits. With the return of a number of jun- iors and seniors from the last two years' re- building program, coaches Dale Shearer and Bill Hinga helded a fairly strong team. This year's team had three or four stand- outs in the mile, broad jump, and the shot- put, which gave the Dutch a lot of points in their meets. The organization. under the sponsorship of Miss jane MacDonald, serves the student body of Holland High and visiting schools at football and basketball games. During the football season, they are assigned to different jobs, such as selling candy, popcorn, hot-dogs, and pop. Some girls work underneath the bleachers selling, as the girls outside, and also sell coffee and hot chocolate. For basketball games there are two different groups, which alternate at the home games. At these games candy and popcorn are sold by the Athletic Sisters. For Tulip Time the girls work on Saturday during the Band Festival and the night performances.
