As a genial host to gov- ernment and economics classes in Room 103, he has won a place in our hearts. As the energetic overseer of the Senior Magazine Campaign, he has inspired class after class to go over the top. This year's Senior class showed the impact of his spirit by selling over eight thousand dollars worth of maga- zines! Our friend, teacher, and leader, we thank you .... se... M. L, . MISS CALVERT An astonished comment heard after this year's senior play was, That was a profes- sional performancel How do these high school people do it? The players them- selves know the answerg their success is due to one person, Miss Ruby Calvert, Dynamic, magnetic, and extremely enthused about her work and young people, Miss Calvert has made an outstanding record as a Speech teacher and Dramatics coach year after year. For helping us produce an outstanding Senior play and for being such a line class sponsor, we wish to thank you ..., MR. DAMSON Being a family man, Mr. Damson has an understanding of young people. As a coach, he has worked with many boys, help- ing them develop into better citizens. Active in the Magazine Campaign, he handled many of the money problems and was in- strumental in helping us smash all previous records. This, together with his supervision of the ticket sales for the Senior play, proved his worth as a Senior Class sponsor. For all your time, patience, and help, we thank you .... e Iii: l Miz. 'ELUID EL DY 55 Melody of '53-a nocturne of dreams and desires, a medley of happy times and busy hours. We laughed and lived to the lilting strains of music - the beating rhythm of our band marching across a football field, the ballads we waltzed to at sweater dances or formals, the hymns we sang in chapel. We cheered to the jazz of the pep band, thrilled to the overture of our play, sang to our Alma Mater with open hearts. Yes, our school life begins and ends to the serenade of music. September comes and with it the shouts of recog- nition and trills of laughter as old friends meetg the cadence of feet treading unfamiliar halls. The year flows by in a symphony of work and fun, until, unbelievably soon, seniors march down the aisle. Pomp and Circum- stance flows through the chapel into hearts reluctant yet glad. The year is gone-a fantasia of fun and fancyg four years of joy and sorrow step aside-the prelude to a new life has begun. 01 CODNDDUCTODRS Page Ten JOAN BRIEVE -A Latin, English, Girls' Counselor, A.B., M.A. DORIS BRQWER H HENRIETTA ALTHUIS Art, Geography, A.B RUTH ATHEY- English, Speech, A.B JAM ES A. Witli Mayor Bos as maestro this year, our line student council members performed their best, as we, the music lovers, will testify. The tirst number was football pro- grams and was followed by the exciting Football liesti- val, appropriately called The Worlcl in Her Arms . They thrilled us with the Special to Benton Harboru. an experience we'll never forget, and continued their medley by introducing the all-school Christmas Party. They completely sold us on book covers and season tickets, and concluded by inspiring us with the need to give to The Infantile Paralysis Drive . For their encores they really put across Dutch Treat Week Qremember, girls?j and for the enjoyment of everyone, Career and College Day. Besides all of this they have been active participants of the Region Four Student Council. We could never completely cover the program but we do wish to give our congratulations and thanks to the 1955 student council for a job well done and wish to tell them what a hit they made with us. Broadway? Chicago? No, the scene was the Holland High School auditorium. Under the truly brilliant direction of Miss Ruby Cfalvert a cast of twelve presented Double Doorn by Elizabeth Mclfadden on the nights of February 16, 17, 18, and 19. The players and director put in many long and grueling hours ot' rehearsal, but the unsung heroes of the theater world must not be lor' gotten. Those were the people who constituted the ten committees that made it possible for the play to be presented: the business, publicity, program, ticket, progress, music, auditorium and balcony ushers, corridor supervision, and production statls. To those who witnessed it, and to those who participated in it, the senior class production of Double Door was one of the most out- standing events of years past, and of years to come. Magazine Campaign Prof looking the matter over with managers Al Meyer and Geri Skorske. The Greatest Show on Earthf' theme for the annual magazine campaign, proved to be a very appropriate slogan for the class of '53. The whole-hearted ettorts of each senior contributed to the tremendous success of this project. These ambitious salesmen topped any previous class by selling 358,146.74 worth of magazines. Due credit should be given to the class patrons, Prof Hansen, Miss Calvert, and Mr. Damson under whose expert lead- ership the senior class of '53 has profited so greatly. The spirited competition which arose from this campaign did a great deal to stimulate and, in the end, to achieve such line results. Witli the north side pitted against the south side, the traditional battle for top sales hon- ors was closely fought. Finally, however, the powerful south side won, claiming the winning prize, Blinkie, the clown, while the north side received Intoxication, the little skunk. Page S!'l't'I1fj'-l:il'l Y? Varsity Football Holland High rebounded from a poor season last year to compile an impressive record of five wins, three losses, and one tie this season, one of the best in recent years. Coach Shearer, in his first year as Varsity coach, and Ned Stuits, his able assistant, sparked the Dutch to a Hne season. Thirteen of the thirty-seven boys who made the team in late August were veterans of last year's team. Jerry Victor and Carl Visscher were co-captains this season and both handed in stellar performances. Paul Mack and Blaine Timmer were elected co-captains at the end of the season for 1953. Some of the highlights of the season were the receiving of all-state honorable mention by Carl Visscher and the naming of jerry Victor to an all-state second team. Also, our defeat of a scrappy Cadillac team after an upset last season, should be considered a highlight. Varsity Basketball The most impressive season in the history of Holland High was registered by this year's varsity -a season marked by victory after victory and by record making statistics. This terrific team racked up seventeen wins with only two losses 4 each lost by one point! Our only defeat dur- ing the regular season was to Grand Rapids Central, but we later romped over them two games in a row. Until we bowed out to Grand Rapids South in the quarter-finals, we sailed along on a 13-game winning streak- the long- est in our history. We are very proud of this 13-man squad. Due to their fine teamwork, one of them was able to bring home special honors. Dean Vander Wal, our high scorer, set a new record by making 33 points against Creston in the Re- gional linals at Kalamazoo. By the end of the season, he had made an average of 19.7 points per game, His play- ing was tops and he made thetop, being singled out for All-State honors! The boys that made up this year's team had played to- gether since grade school. They shared the Southwest Conference championship with Muskegon when playing on the reserves in their sophomore year. By winning the regional trophy this spring, they brought to a fitting climax their many years of excellent ball handling and teamwork. Our varsity averaged 60.3 points per game while hold- ing our opponents to 48.9 per contest. As Coach Weiss would say, That's good scoring in any man's league. A wonderful team, a wonderful coach, and a hne sea- son. Again we knocked at the door to the State Champion- ship Throne Room, only to lose by one point. This brings back to mind the heart breaking game with High- land Park last year. However, in the minds of every Holland supporter is the knowledge that our team was second to none. The boys lacked height this year but made up for it by being the hardest light- ing team coach Bob ever led. Little Bill Sandahl, who played guard with Dwayne QTigerj Teu- sink and Bob Saunders, paced the team by putting in 132 points for the season, Bill also was elected honorary captain by his team-mates. Closely following Bill for top hon- ors were forwards -lim Van De Wege with 118 and Hank Visscher with 95. Tiger Teusink led with his free throw percentage ot 6i.7C? and shot percentage was held by Jim Van De Wege' with a high of 39.11. Guards Phil Boersmn, Terry Gentry, Rog Doolittle, and jim Boeve also were very active. Other forwards who were high scorers as Coach Connell well as good rebounders were jerry Boeve, Elwood Plaggemars, and sharp shooter Dave Dykstra. Page Ixiilllvvl'-,l'lllt't Suited: juyce Kell er. Spring Sports BASEBALL i An outstanding group of lettermen returned to spark Coach Stuits' baseball team this spring. Although the season was fair, the veterans as well as the spirited newcomers gained valuable experience in sportsmanship. TRACK Our track team, coached by Mr. Shearer, while not having an outstanding season, deserves much credit for their Hne sportsmanship, their determined efiorts, and hard work. GOLF From a nucleus of last year's letter winners, a good, hard-working golf team took shape under their new coach, Mr. Hornbaker, and played a successful season. TENNIS This year's tennis team, coached by joe Moran, was made up of a host of returning veterans. This well-bal- anced group strongly advanced, and was able to hold their own in their 15-match schedule, and the regional and state meets which followed. CROSS-COUNTRY Last fall's cross-country team, coached by Mr. Bu- chanan, won three and lost two meets during the 1952 season. The hi-lite of the season was the brilliant run- ning of Ron Den Uyl. Ron won every dual meet he entered and took second place at the state meet held in Ypsilanti. It took hard work on the part of all the boys, however, to give the team its victories of the season. Page Niuely-Ifire Girls' Athletic Association Come dressed as a song was the word around school as G.A.A. put on its first big party ol' the yearg prizes going for the best costumes. Besides this, bowling was in- troduced this year as a regular sport, as well as the old timers, volleyball and baseball. Tourna- ments were held to determine which teams would hold the champion title. Of course, the ever-popular tennis can never be forgotten. Another big project was the sale of the red and white bal- loons at the football Festivalg profits going to the annual Hon- or Banquet held in the spring at which awards are presented to deserving girl athletes. Behind the scenes of all these activities was Miss joyce Keller who devoted so much time to supervising the games and parties of the only girls' sports organization in H. H. S.
