STUDENT COUNCIL 1947-48 'l'his june of 19-18 brings to an end the thirty-fourth student council of Holland High School. The council endeavors to create more friendly relations among the stu- dents. Under the leadership of the council, the students sponsored a variety of projects with enthusiasm and success. ln November it was American liducation Week. During the Christmas holidays, the council sponsored the best Christmas program ever, Money was given to the City Mission and to the Salvation Army. In january, the council sponsored the March of Dimes. Career and College Day was also council sponsored. HOLLAND HIGH HERALD BOARD The l'lnl!izml Ililqlw Hemlif is distributed to approximately 750 students, faculty members and adver- tisers. Subscriptions for the paper are taken early in the semester before the publication of the First issue. ln addition to these subscriptions all servicemen in this country or overseas who wish to receive the paper are sent each issue. Students talking journalism edit and publish this bi-monthly publication of four pages. The paper includes sports, news, features, editorials and advertising which would be of interest to high school students. Eight issues are put out each semester including special Christmas and Tulip Time editions of six pages each. All copies are printed in the junior High print shop. The publication is supported by the money collected through subscriptions and advertising. HORIZON CLUB Every high school girl is given the opportunity to join the Hor- izon club. Horizon is an organi- zation which combines service and social functions. Rolling bandages at the hos- pital is the important service work done. The club sponsors sweater dances after football and basketball games. Meetings are held bi-monthly in the homes of members. Of all the activities the highlights of the year are the formal dances. Through these many service and social activities Horizon strives to develop each girl's personality and character. PERSONNEL BOARD The Personnel Board is com- posed of eleven members under the direction of Miss Clara Ree- verts and Miss Ruth Blekkink. A personal record is kept for every student in the high school. On this are recorded all of the ac- tivities in which the student has participated, the offices which he has held, and any honor which he has earned. When a student graduates this card is transferred to a permanent record file and any employer, or other person, requesting information about a former student is referred to this file in the oliice. Under the efficient leadership of Ivan Huyser, im- proved bicycle racks, badges and a standing list of penalties were brought into effect. Along with directing traffic, supervising fire drills and en- forcing school ordinances, the squad added to its schedule ush- ering at basketball games. WELFARE BOARD Remember that card you re- ceived from the students and faculty when you were sick? Maybe you wondered who the thoughtful person was. The per- son behind that thoughtful ges- ture was Lucille Schutmaat, head of the Welfare Board, or one of the board members. The duty of the Welfare Board is to send sympathy and get-well cards, flowers, and fruit to the students and faculty of Holland High. The plot centered around Minick fEdward Avisonj an old man. He came to live with his son, Fred fCharles Zwemerj and his daughter-in-law, Nettie fLucille Schutmaatj, in their very fashionable Chicago apartment. Minick didn't mix well with their friends: Lil fMarjorie Mulderj, jim Corey QTed Stickelsj, Marge QDorothy Ten Brinkj and Al Diamond QCharles Van Durenj, although he tried. Annie flietty D. Cookj, a maid who wouldn't put up with Minick, was replaced by Lula fMargie Frenchj. His old cronies, Price Qjack Essenburgj and Dietenhofer QRandall Vande Wa- terj, help Minick upset Nettie's Club meeting in their friendly but blundering way. Minick solves the tragi-comic situation by joining his friends in an old men's home. Ninth graders through twelfth graders compete in contests and tournaments in various sports. An all-star basketball team com- petes with an all-star team from Grand Haven. This year the girls were invited to Grand Haven. Mrs. joseph Borgman, assisted by Miss Margaret Waltz, is the advisor of the organ- ization. The organization works on a point basis with numerals, letters, chevrons, and medals being awarded. These are given at an honor breakfast in February. VARSITY FOOTBALL Having the best season in many years, the Holland High football team finished the season in second place in the Southwestern conference standings. The team had a total record of five wins and four losses. Under a new coach, Robert W. Stupka, the team succeeded in defeating the Muskegon Big Reds for the first time in the school's history. The score of the contest was 13 to 7. Holland defeated Grand Haven, Benton Harbor and Muskegon in conference play while the team suifered losses to Kalamazoo and Muskegon Heights. Four boys were placed on the all-conference team. They were Fuzz Bauman, endg Don Van Hekken, halfbackg junior Bussies, guard, and Spence Van Alsburg, a tackle. Bauman was also honored by being selected on an all-state team while Van Alsburg was chosen most valuable player by his teammates. Bill Bocks and Bussies were named co-captains of the football team. VARSITY BASKETBALL Having a mediocre season, the Holland High school basketball team won only five games while losing 13. With a record of two wins and eight defeats, the Dutch finished in a tie with Grand Haven for the cellar. One of the most serious handicaps the Dutch had to overcome was the height problem. With only two boys over six feet, the Hollanders were always at a disadvantage. They had to rely on speed and accurate shooting. RESERVE FOOTBALL Alter having two outstanding seasons, the Little Dutch slumped a little and managed to win only three games while coming out on the short end of six contests. Coach Carroll Norlin developed some line material from what he had to work with, and as the season progressed the reserves got better every game. Defeating Zeeland, South Haven, and Benton Harbor and losing twice to Grand Haven and once each to Muskegon, Muskegon Heights, Kalamazoo, and Grand Rapids Central, the reserves completed their schedule. Coach Norlin presented each member of the squad with a reserve letter. Coaching a reserve team is very dillicult because very few of the players have had any experience at all, but Coach Norlin has done a very fine job. RESERVE BASKETBALL Finishing the season just below the .500 mark, the Holland High reserves won seven games while losing eight. Coach Fred A. Weiss had some outstanding cage talent this year, and this material should prove very valuable on the varsity next year. Dale Van Dorple led the reserves in scoring with 142 points, while Tim Beerthuis was runnerup with 95. Tim played in only eight games. In the conference standings the Little Dutch won three games and lost seven, but the won and lost record does not indicate the closeness of the games. The reserves averaged 37 points per game while their opponents averaged 36 per game. TENNIS Compiling a record of 10 victories in 13 encounters and annexing the regional crown for the sixth time in a row the Holland High tennis team completed another highly suc- cessful season. Second place honors in the Southwestern conference also went to the locals by virtue of their seven wins against one defeat. Holland's racketeers opened the season with an easy vic- tory over the Benton Harbor netters and then continued on to rack u seven straight vic- tories be ore being defeated by the strong Western State squad. The other two losses were also at the hands of Western State and Kalamazoo Central. Season's play ended with the regional tourney, played on the local courts, in which Holland took top honors fol- lowed by Lansing Sexton and Muskegon Heights, respec- tively, with Ken Van Wieren and Rog Brunsell copping the regional doubles title. l74l TRACK With bad weather hamper- ing the Holland High track- sters most of the season, they still managed to gain fourth place in the regional track meet held in Kalamazoo. Each of Holland's meets was held in either very chilly or rainy weather. The thinclads defeated Zee- land in a dual meet, and came in sixth in the large Albion College meet. They also showed up well in triangular and quadrangular meets with Kalamazoo, Muskegon Heights, Allegan, and Benton Harbor. Coach Austin Buch- anan had 12 lettermen return- ing to bolster the 1948 track team. Last year Holland qual- ined two men for the state meet held in Lansing. Prospects are good this year with many boys being in- terested in track, and Holland will be especially strong in the running events. Although weak in the field events, the Dutch should receive many valuable points in all the events and should be a strong contender for the regional crown. BASEBALL Coach Carroll Norlin and his baseball team completed one of the most successful seasons in the school's history. Although the over-all total was five wins, five defeats and one tie, Holland High fin- ished second behind Kalama- zoo Central in the Southwes- tern conference. Hampered by the bad weather, the season got off to a slow start. Many games were played on sloppy dia- monds and others were called because of rain. The baseball nine was also hampered in practice by the many rainy days. Playing three games on the last three days of the season, the team was victorious in two and consequently took second place. In every con- test the linksmen were close to victory, but they could not capitalize on their chances. Much experience was gained during the season, and many veterans are returning this year to make the Dutchmen a sure conference threat.
