Dogbiscuit Makes Sensational ' Finish at North Shore Track Dogbiscuit II, 12-year-old filly owned by Betty Kuiper, was ac- claimed king of the horse world after his sensational victory in the 100-year free style event at the North Shore Polo Grounds. Dogbiscuit appeared to be in good formg but her victory was due largely to the expert horse- manship of her rider, Jockey Riemersma. Roselyn Wolters, judge of the event, stated that although Dogbiscuit finished third, he was given the prize for trying. The purse of 852.25 was divided among her three train- ers, Gertrude Wagner, Alvda Weller, and Wilma Vander Bie. Never-win, the sensational wonder horse of 1909, attempted a comeback today, just 33 years, seven months, and two days aft- er his retirement. Esther Huyser, owner of the animal, took the horse down from his place in the local museum to race him once more in the R. E. Chapman handicap for one-armed horses. Former Holland High Stars Almost Break World Records America's two top track stars, Keith Nieboer and Tom Doc Walsh, came within 15 minutes of shattering the world's mile record on the ultra-modern cin- der track of Holland's new Civic Auditorium, Riemersma Hall. Two other former track stars of Holland High School, Swift Willy Postmus and Leonard Jur- ries, were forced to drop out of the gruelling 20-minute contest. Coach Lloyd Nyland was wait- ing at the finish line with a case of Wheaties for the triumphant pair as they staggered across the finish line. Walsh, who struck the tape a fraction of a second ahead of Nieboer, imme- diately collapsed and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance driven by Rodger Van Nuil. Upon examination, it was found that Continued on Page 2. 2 OAT BIN TIPS AND SPORTS REVIEW the little finger of his left hand was slightly cut, and he imme- diately submitted to an opera- tion by the notorious brain sur- geon, Glenn Weller. The music department of Holland High had a large number of juniors in it. This department is made up of the band, orchestra, and the a cappella choir. Then there were the athletic activities. The football team, basketball team, and the track team were made up of many junior boys. Not only did the boys take part in the athletic activities, but some junior girls, known as Athletic Sisters, sold candy and gum at the games. The Student Council was composed of more than half juniors. The patrons of the junior Class of 1945-46 were Miss Wiskamp and Mr. Mackay. COUNCIL June, 1946, brings to an end the thirty-second Student Council of Holland High. Holland High's form of Student government is known to be one of the finest in our state, and many schools have copied our plan of government. Under the leadership of the council, the students sponsored a variety of projects with enthusiasm and success. In November, American Education Week was observed with worthwhile Chapel pro- grams and an impressive Armistice Day assembly. Christmas, too, was of special significance, as the council led the school through a week of interesting programs. The spirit of Christmas was maintained as the students presented large baskets of food, and money to the Salvation Army and the City Rescue Mission. The many other activities of the council of 1945-46 met success only because of the Hne cooperation and spirit of the Holland High School students. k i' 'k i' 'k 'A' 'lc 'A' 'k 'k ir if 50 Back - Marcus, Chapman, Veltman, Zuidema, Robbert, Schepers, Hinga, Van Eenenaam. BOOMERANG BOARD After grueling hours of work, with strain on both mind and body, the Boomemfzg Board finally finished Work on the 1946 annual. Impressed upon their minds forever are visions of heaps of typewritten copy, cardboard and glue, and a mountain of pictures with countless leering faces. Finally, an end came to their suffering, and with it a glorious celebration in the form of weak shouts and weaker echoes. Think of these, people, when you review the joyful years recorded in your 1946 Boomemngg for the only aim of this faithful group was to capture and record the many pleasant memories which we all have of Holland High School. HOLLAND HIGH HERALD BOARD Subscriptions for the Hollarzd High Herald are taken by the journalism students a few days before the first issue of the paper is published. Approximately 750 copies are distributed to the faculty and students in Holland High School. The number of former graduates now in the armed services who are receiving the Herald totals about 450. journalism students edit and publish the Herald which is printed in the junior High print shop. News, sports, features, and editorials are included in the paper which con- sists of four pages. There is a special Christmas edition of four to six pages. An extra pictorial insert called the l'Roto is added each month. The Roto is edited and pub- lished by the National Scholastic Press Association and sponsored by the Western Electric and Manufacturing Company. The paper is self-supporting through the sale of subscriptions and advertising. A giftiof 55150 from the class of '45 finances the cost of mailing Heralds to those in the service. The first purpose is to provide an outlet for those students who enjoy music. Secondly, the music department provides service to the community through programs and concerts. We are proud of the three fine organizations-the a cappella choir, band, and orchestra- which we have in our school. This year Holland High also produced some able soloists and ensembles in the musical field. To all in this department go our congratulations for a good year and thanks for good service. ir i' it 'k ir 'lr 5 5 E 2 E a E e K E E 2 P r Q NA, . . , 4 f - - H -X 'wx z, ' , my www -f l f . . It was presented to the public on March 18, 19, 21, and 22, and was enthusiastically received. Netting a clear profit of 35840, Ring Around Elizabeth ranked tops in sale totals. Mr. E. D. Hanson and Mr. T. H. Carter did a fine job supervising the business angle of the play. While' taking pictures for the Boomerang and the Holland High Herald was the chief activity of the club, in- terested students gained experi- ence in the art of taking better pictures and in doing their own processing. In the course of the year the members were given opportunities to exhibit their work at club contests. With the money collected by their activi- ties, the group purchased con- siderable new equipment for the darkroom. 'Ir i' 'A' 'k GIRLS' LEAGUE A Holland High School Girls' League is an organization of which every girl in high school is a member. There are four officers: president, vice-presi- dent, secretary, and treasurer. At the beginning of each semester, the League has charge of the Book Exchange. Profit earned from this venture is placed in the treasury and is used for 'various causes through- out the year. A gym party was given in November to get the girls ac- quainted with each other. This party took the form of a planned potluck. The Christmas program was centered around a different theme from that of former years. Instead of bringing gifts and donating them to the needy of our city, the girls brought l'White gifts to be sent to the Netherlands. Some of the profit from the Book Exchange was used to mail these boxes. Back - Schaafsma, Klaasen. Front - Zuidema, Robbert. 'k i' t 'k i' 'A' 'k 'A' 60 Back - Hinga, Moody, Klaasen. They have, however, acutely felt the manpower shortage due to the fact that one of their male associates, Bob Northuis, has enrolled in the University of Great Lakesf, Bob writes that his school colors are now navy blue and white, and that he's having gobs and gobs of fun. This leaves Norman Bub- bles Bredeweg as the only masculine member of the group. Many fine discussion meetings were held, and outside speakers came in and helped the boys with their problems. This year the football pro- -grams at our games were pro- cured by the Hi-Y. This makes it possible to provide each student, who pays his class dues, vvith a year-book. The campaign is run on the basis of competition. This year sides consisted of the girls fCoedsj versus the boys fBoyedsj. This competition makes the campaign more interesting and provides a goal for each team. Every year the losing team must plan a party for the winning lteam. The Coeds were victorious this year. Captain of the winning team was Barbara Eilander, with Shirley Bedell as her assistantg and Eugene Marcus headed the Boyeds, with Bob Northuis as his assistant. This year the magazine campaign was highly successful. The proposed quota was reached and was finally exceeded by 4W. A profit of 31794.45 was cleared. VARSITY FOOTBALL This year's varsity football team ground through its nine-game schedule with a record of three Wins, five losses, and one tie, the tie being against Holland's traditional rival, Grand Haven. At the beginning of the season the squad displayed several fine perform- ances, and, using the T-formation, trampled three of its first four opponents. After being beaten in anjvery close game by Muskegon, however, something snapped. Two members of the team did receive special honor, being named on the All-Conference team. They were Captain Stan McClure, a senior guard, and Kenny Kuipers, halfback, a junior. Coach Paul Camburn and his boys should do better next season, though, as plenty of jun- iors saw action this year. VARSITY BASKETBALL After a 27-year lapse Holland High can again be proud to say- We're the State Champs! Yes, this year our varsity basketball team captured the Michigan High School Class A Basketball Championship. After regular season play, during which the team won nine games and lost six and placed second in the tough Southwestern Conference standings, the boys really showed some high calibre basketball. In the words of Coach Mackay, who, incidentally, deserves much more credit than has been accorded him, l'The two biggest contributing factors toward our winning the championship were the com- petitive spirit of the boys and their excellent team play. There was no individual star on the team. All members were high scorers and to stop them the opposing teams had to stop five stars. And they just couldn't do it. Three of the team members were given special honor by being placed on the All-Conference team. They were Leo Vander Kuy, Bud Vande Wege, and Jack Van Dorple. The first two players also were placed on the all-state squad. BASEBALL Holland High's baseball nine, under the tutoring of Coach Carroll Norlin, completed a none-too-successful season in 1945, winning only three games and losing seven. At the beginning of the season things looked very bright and the team registered two suc- cessive wins. But bad breaks and the loss at mid-season of Ernie Victor, star pitcher, combined to break up a winning combination. Many boys gained experience, however, and this spring's squad looks fairly strong in most departments. After going through an undefeated series of dual and three-Way matches, the team, composed largely of seniors, tied Kalamazoo Central for the Conference championship and went on to win the title. Thereby Holland qualified six men for the state tournament. Al Van Meeteren turned in an especially stellar performance by copping both the conference and regional singles titles. This spring, as the team returns to the courts, its ranks are greatly depleted by graduation, but another good season is in prospect. ir k uk if 'A' 'A' 'k i' 'A' 'k 'k ak E s 5 E ' e E E Q E Q 5 3 3 3 a 3 1 I E E f i E Q SEPTEMBER School opens, and Eva greets the new students with her usual cheery smile.
