V SENIOR PLAY The Senior Class of 1943 presented the three-act drama, Letters to Lucerne, by Fritz Rotter and Allen Vincent, on March 22, 23, 24, and 25. The play, which was timely and modern, takes place at the outbreak of the war in early fall of 1939 in an American girls' school in Lucerne, Switzerland. The effects of the war on individuals from different countries is shown in the letters received by the girls attending the school and by their reactions to the letters. The success of the play was due to the splendid cooperation of the cast, committees, senior class, and citizens of Holland. Miss Calvert, who chose and directed the play and cast, deserves special credit. Also Mr. Hanson and Mr. Damson for their excellent work on the business staff. The cast is as follows: Olga Kirinski Gustave - Erna Schmidt - Gretchen Linder Hans Schmidt Margarethe - Mrs. Hunter Bingo Hill Felice Renoir - Sally jackson Marion lCurwood Francois - - Koppler - V V V Rose Mary Ruch Ivan Borton Ruth jipping - - julia Smith Bob De Young Myra Bontekoe - Luella Pyle Elaine Hertz Mildred cook Anne Beatty Helen Van Dyk Paul Overbeek Bernard Kool V i 2 if R N 1 Zi CHOIR oomz, D1ru3cTo11 TRIXIE M SS MI l'1 F1 I C V U 'E 44 E E mt! 1-4' :fvwxw 1-E: fv OD..::::.4u,2uU r,,,,,'U .11 cuff, .QHCLQQE-1--Uv wuz: on3'U1.. CHEER LEADERS As in previous years, the cheer leaders have shouldered the responsibility of creating and upholding our school spirit. They well deserved the cooperation given them by the student body. V V V V V V V V 54 GIRLS' LEAGUE The Girls' League is an organization to which all high school girls belong. Throughout the year the members have enjoyed many interesting and instructive programs. Several parties were also sponsored, besides the usual collection of con- tributions for the needy at Christmas. G. A. A. G. A. A. is an organiza- tion to which any high school girl may belong. Basketball, volley-ball, bowling, tennis, and parties are part of the active schedule every year. Competition between organ- ized teams provides an inter- esting all-sports athletic pro- gram for both junior and Senior High School girls. ATHLETIC SISTERS As in previous years, the Athletic Sisters have been on duty selling candy and hot dogs at the football and bas- ketball games. The proceeds of these sales have gone into the Athletic Fund which helps buy equipment for the teams. The group has also enjoyed several parties and potluck suppers before the games. FOOTBALL g As in years before, the Holland High School football squad was too light for its heavier conference foes and, consequently, failed to gain fame or recognition except from its own school fans, who stood by with cheers and encouragement through every contest. Coach Malcolm Mackay built practically a new team, for he had lost seventeen of the past season's players. Although the team wasn't an exceptional squad, it had plenty of zip and fight, and any conference team will admit that they had to give their all in defeating the Dutch. There was no coasting for any opponent and the young men con- stituting the reserve squad are bound to keep up the old Dutch tradition of-fight! BASKETBALL The varsity basketball squad established a line record of eight wins in fourteen starts during the 1942-1943 season. There were many excellent teams in the Southwestern Conference, as was evidenced by a three-way tie for first place between Benton Harbor, Muskegon Heights, and Kalamazoo Central. A This year's varsity squad might be classed as a new team. Four of the five regular positions were taken by boys who were playing regular for the first time. Next season, fans will see another dianged varsity squad, because of the loss of some men to the armed forces and some through graduation. The coming squad will be inter- esting to watch as it will be composed of the members of the past season's reserve squad, who have lost but a few games. Holland lost two games to the Muskegon Heights Tigers and was beaten in the annual regional tournament by the Tigers after eliminating the Grand Haven squad. SPRING SPORTS For the first time in the history of Holland High School, the tennis team won the Southwestern Conference championship. The tennis matches were held in Holland this year and six conference schools entered: Benton Harbor, Kalamazoo, Muskgon, Muske- gon Heights, Grand Haven, and Holland. Many veterans returned this year but only a six-man traveling team could be main- tained. The highlight of the 1942-1943 track season was the conference track meet also held at Holland. All Southwestern Conference schools attended except Grand Haven. Only two H winners returned from last year's track team and numerous other boys turned out for their first year. From this year's team should come a good team for next year. Holland's baseball squad was strong this year and some outstanding rookies were produced from the sophomore class. Next year the Dutch will put an experienced squad on the field for competition. The golf team was hindered greatly by the loss of their Coach Gerald Breen to the Navy.
