IT IS IN JUST THE SAME MANNER THAT WE HOPE THE MEMORIES OF FOUR HAPPY YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL WILL BOOMER- ANG BACK TO YOU IN FUTURE YEARS AND IT IS WITH THIS THOUGHT IN MIND THAT WE PUBLISH THE HOLLAND HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL FOR 1941. DEDICATICN To Hanna Hoekje, who through her long period of leadership, her helpful understanding, and her influence on the religious life of the school and the community, has won the respect and admiration of all who have come under her guidance, the class of 1941 appreciatively dedicates this Boomerang. 1 Faculty - MR. This comedy is in three acts by Florence Ryerson and Colin Clements. The story concerns Penny Wood and Chuck Harris as they go about the frequently difficult task of growing up. Penny forgets to be a manhater and succumbs to an attack of puppy love when she meets Roger Van Vleck. She finally discovers that Roger is double- crossing her Uncle Mervyn by trying to steal his girl. This brings her back to normal and, incidentally, to Chuck. The cast is as follows: Penny Wood Chuck Harris - Mrs. Wood - Elmer Tuttle - Mr. Wood - Eaae--- - Milly Lou - G. Mervyn Roberts Roger Van Vleck Mr. Harris - - - Shirley Wentworth Ralph Wentworth Julie Harris - - Irene Lundie Albertus Van Dyke Betty -lane Hurlbut Thomas Van Dahm Wilbur De Witt Mildred Scholten Arlyn Voorhorst - Robert Helrigel Chester Dangremond - Leonard Dick - Lucille Dams Marvin Van Eyck - Cleone Topp The class of 1941 had lots of fun and experience producing the Senior Play and it will always be remembered as one of our most outstanding achievements of the year ul. . 225, .QGW : 15 1 X Jef? ?E'3'if 9 'A' -' Qu p H A wx: '4- Vg, riff A 7 52 .M f . 5 4 Wx 5 QQ? If the cause is a worthy one we cannot afford to turn it down. It is to our advantage to respond with all our capable facilities, for, in doing so we are not only performing a duty for those about us but we are also advanc- ing ourselves. Each year when the Boomerang Board is chosen the students look forward to a bigger and better annual and each year it has proved so. From the time they are chosen, it is the business of the Board to begin collecting material for the annual. Those who are not directly connected with the stall' little realize how much effort and time has been spent on the production. Most of the group pictures and all the snap pages were taken by our own Camera Club. To Beuna Nykamp and Mary Peterson go our thanks for the clever clay dolls in the pictures on the divisional pages. We wish to acknowledge Mr. Veltman and Mr. Chapman as faculty advisors, and we thank the entire board for their cooperation and willingness to serve. It is our hope that the Boomerang of '41 will bring you as much pleasure the hun- dredth time as the first time you leaf through its pages. Third Row-L. Trmmer, M. Kleis, R. Nieusma, M. Prince, A. Athletic Sisters As in previous seasons the Athletic Sisters have been on duty selling confections at the Football and Basketball games and through their efforts the athletic fund has been considerably boosted. Beside their selling, the girls have also found time for several enjoyable parties and pot luck suppers. Camera Club The Camera Club, although having fewer members this year, has nevertheless been very active throughout the season. The club has had picture exchanges with other schools and it is also through their efforts that many pic- tures were taken for the Boomerang. Cheer Leaders Having been selected by the student body, the cheer- leaders proved themselves a worthy group by leading yells and songs at all the school games and programs. 50 Girls' League Gir1's League is an organi- zation consisting of all the high school girls. Through- out the year the members en- joyed interesting programs at which many of the speakers stressed personal problems and vocational opportunities. HI-Y This year the Hi-Y has played an active part in the school activities of many boys. A number of interest- ing meetings were held and many enjoyable evenings were spent in the gymnasium. The local Hi-Y served as host at the district meeting of Hi-Y boys and also enjoyed several interesting outings and Hnan- cial projects. G. A. A. Parties, bowling, tennis, basketball and volley-ball are just a part of the active G. A. A. schedule. Teams for competition have been organized by the girls thus providing an interesting all sport athletic program in junior and Senior High School. 5 1 Second Row- Eleanor Nevenzel, Alberta Van De Vusse, Martha Van Dyke First Row - Myra Kleis, Merry Hadden, Cleo Rutgers. Coaches Taking an active part in all the Southwestern Conference athletic events, Holland High School's athletic department is headed by eight coaches and leaders, active in directing at least two intramural or interscholastic sports. This spring two new sports, track and baseball, were added to the school athletic program and two new coaches, Malcolm Mackay and Austin Buchanan joined the coach- ing faculty. The members of the athletic staff and the sports which they direct are as follows: Mr. Leon Moody- Director of Physical Education and Athletics Mr. Malcolm Mackay- Head football, basketball and track coach Mr. Gerald Breen- Football, Intramural basketball and golf coach Mr. Edward Damson - Reserve football and soft ball coach Mr. Fred Weiss - Reserve basketball and baseball coach Mr. Carl Van Lente-Varsity baseball and Reserve basketball coach Mr. Austin Buchanan - Varsity track and Junior High basketball coach Mr. joseph Moran-Varsity tennis Beside directing the various athletics these men together with members of the faculty engage in an annual basketball game against the intramural basketball champions of the High School. 55 Basketball Third Row- Mr. Mackay, R. Thomas The 1940-41 basketball season of Holland High School will long be remembered as being unusual. Despite the fact that our conference record was disappointing the season could still be called a success because of our fine showing in the tournament. After playing mediocre basketball all season the team suddenly found itself in the last two games of the season and defeated Muskegon and Muskegon Heights. In the tournament, Holland continued its fine play and defeated Muske- gon and Grand Rapids Union to win the regional crown. In the first game of the state tournament the team was defeated by the strong Benton Harbor team which went on to win the state championship. Much of the credit for this year's fine showing must go to Coach Mackay and to the fine spirit the team and students showed throughout the season. 56 K 3 2 Q: 5 yf 25 2 5 Third Row Milewski Scheerhorn Maatman De Witt, Heneveld, Cook, Barry, Mackay. Football Presenting a not too brilliant football season for 1940 the Holland high squad was success- ful in overcoming but one opponent during the year. However, with each succeeding game the team showed marked progress, until in the final event with the ancient rival, Grand Haven, the Dutch squad came through with a thrilling 19 to 6 victory. Two formidable weaknesses of the Holland team were a lack of veterans and a lack of reserves. To remedy this situation for the coming year Coach Mackay played a number of freshmen and sophomores, thus presenting a brighter outlook for 1941. 58 X S E 1 5 L4 Q, 5 52 be 26 2 5 33 z!
