THE SENIOR PLAY The Class of nineteen hundred thirty-nine presented on March thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, the most successful of productions, namely Aurania Rouverol's Skid- ding . This comedy broke all records for attendance, financial returns, and general success. The Hardy family, with its youthful Andy Hardy as a lead, proved to be so typical of American life that the audience soon fell in love with each actor. Wayne Lemmen's portrayal of Andy Hardy will go down in senior play history as a highlight. judge and Mrs. Hardy won merited recognition as grand characters and were excellently played by john Pelon and Marion Geerds. The Hardy's youngest daughter, Marion Hardy, done by Dorothy Hamm, who held the love interest and her fiance, Wayne Trenton III inter- preted by Cecil Bacheller were outstanding young leads. The audiences did so much enjoy the married daughters, Estelle and Myra, who ucame home to Mother . These were done by Virginia Dykhuis and Julia Voss. Grandpa Hardy with his bald head and rheumatism will never be forgotten. Clinton Harrison as Grandpa gave everyone a chance to shed a few sweet tears. Then Aunt Milly, the school teacher aunt with her spelling papers, played by Betty Petersen, was a greatly admired person and last of all came Stubbins, the politician, with Clarence Harris and his rubber cigar in this role. Laughs throughout the entire play were produced by Andy and his attempts to grow up. The scene probably longest remembered will be his entrance made while trying his first shave. The lather on his face was surpassed only by the laughter on the faces of everyone else. The Judge and his political situation furnished the plot complications and Mrs. Hardy, who never could understand the difference between a nomination and an election, usually added to his complications. This clever comedy was picked, cast, and directed by Mrs. Edward Donivan of the Speech department and she was as happy as any member of the Class of nineteen hun- dred thirty-nine to see it so well received. The story deals with the efforts of the Kroggins family to sell Kroggins Kippered Kodlish via Radio. Mr. Kasper Kroggins, played by Harvey Koop, is the czar of the cod-fish industry, who always agrees with any decision made by his ambitious wife, Vir- ginia Dykhuis. Lawrence Moody, playing joe Brown, the operator of station WTNT. and Dale Fris as Jerry Kennedy, the Kroggin's advertising manager, devise a scheme for the test broadcast, whereby they can save joels station and keep Mrs. Kroggins off the air. The scheme failing, more complications arise, but all are straightened out before the final curtain. Others taking solo parts were: Claribel Dunnewin, Marjiorie Brouwer, Phyllis Pel- grim, Mildred Herman, Homer Barber, and jack Yeomans. The singing by the exceptionally large chorus and the playing by the orchestra was especially appreciated by the audience. VARSITY FOOTBALL After enjoying one of the best seasons in football history in 1937, Holland High School was forced during the season of 1958 to start rebuilding for the next few years Thus, a large number of new men were added to the few remaining from the preyious team. Two veterans, Koop and Westrate, formed the nucleus for the new team That they were dependable is shown by their selection on the second all-conference team and their being chosen by their teammates as co-captains. The team developed into a very light aggregation that needed experience As this was gained, the team play developed until a creditable showing was made. Several close games proved the fighting spirit of the squad. This was especially true of the game played with the veteran Muskegon team when Holland came the closest to defeating them in the history of the school. There are thirteen letter-men returning for the next season. The experience they have gained plus the added Weight and speed should result in a big improvement in their play. The high school was fortunate in having a very strong reserve team during the past season. Many of these players will join the varsity squad and they should prove a valu able addition. Holland High School can look forward to a vastly improved football team next season and should expect to see several exciting games on the gridiron at Riverview Stadium. BASKETBALL SEASON 1938-39 There were a great many pleasant things connected with the basketball season and some disap- pointing ones. There was a question in the minds of all loyal supporters about what kind of a team the school would have after two exceptionally good years. The nrst three games surely gave no great promises. Beginning with the Grand Rapids Central contest the team showed improve- ment, developed rapidly, and steadily grew better until the game with Muskegon Heights. The tension became too high and the team broke and it took a short time for them to realize that. This seems to be a situation to regret but it is one that comes to every team if it is up to its peak early in a season and several contests remain. Two games were lost before realization came and the way up again was hard and long. The tournament came a little too soon and although progress was indicated, it came too slowly and we could not get over the first step although the game was lost in an overtime. This season, however, was exceptionally good, for the team won nine games and lost tive and reached the top of the Southwestern Michigan High School Athletic Conference for the second time in the history of the school. Unfortunately, we must share that place with Grand Haven, but it is gratifying to reach the top.
