Zin Hlvmnriam LUCILLE PETERSON RANDALL STROOP Member of Senior Class, died in Hol- Member of junior Class, killed in auto land Hospital December 2, 1937. accident November 4, 1937. CROSSING THE BAR Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar When I put out to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound or foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell When I embarkg For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. -Alfred Temzyroiz '

MISS EMMA HOEKJE Zin imlemnriam CHARACTER What is character? It is what I am, have been and shall beg what I am not, but hope to be. It is what I might have been and chose not to beg what I can never hope to become, and yet aspire to be. It is the will to say No , the boldness to say Yes . It is the courage to refuse, the wisdom to accept. It is the mind to shun evil, the purpose to choose the good. It is the scorn of self-pity, the corn- passion for another's pain. It is the strength to bear burdens, thc passion to serve. It is the meekness to grace the lowest place, the humbleness to do one's best in the highest. It is the patience to endure hardship, the hope to alleviate it. It is the will- ingness to acknowledge weakness, the eagerness to gain strength. It is the faith to endure defeat, the humility to accept success. It is the outward reach against the inward urge. It is the forward step against the backward trend. It is the upward surge against the downhill pull. It is the heaven- ward aspiration against the earthly suggestion. It is God in man the hope of glory. MJ'
