It is what I am, have been and shall beg what I am not, but hope to be. It is what I might have been and chose not to beg what I can never hope to become, and yet aspire to be. It is the will to say No , the boldness to say Yes . It is the courage to refuse, the wisdom to accept. It is the mind to shun evil, the purpose to choose the good. It is the scorn of self-pity, the corn- passion for another's pain. It is the strength to bear burdens, thc passion to serve. It is the meekness to grace the lowest place, the humbleness to do one's best in the highest. It is the patience to endure hardship, the hope to alleviate it. It is the will- ingness to acknowledge weakness, the eagerness to gain strength. It is the faith to endure defeat, the humility to accept success. It is the outward reach against the inward urge. It is the forward step against the backward trend. It is the upward surge against the downhill pull. It is the heaven- ward aspiration against the earthly suggestion. It is God in man the hope of glory. CROSSING THE BAR Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar When I put out to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound or foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell When I embarkg For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. -Alfred Temzyroiz ' DEDICATION TO MISS MYRA TEN CATE -ONE WHO HAS PROVED HERSELF A LOYAL FRIEND TO ALL THE STUDENTS, WHO HAS INSPIRED US AND TAUGHT US AN APPRECIATION FOR THE EINER THINGS IN LIFE- WE DEDICATE THIS ISSUE OF THE BOOMERANGH. v-.4 o , H 4- A w. we ws X Snag, ,f Xu A. 1521-., ' IW 1 1,4 vu. 4- ab, nw, 1- 4g:'g-.',1:.:::g1t'g ', q,f'j,.,1...4, 5 ' har,'Flai'f'.11,1-iiitf. G. HWIZ PAGE 2 7 C PAGE 28 I C HIiS I O I PROPHECY War had been declared at last. Battles were raging the world over. I had hoped when I was graduated in 1938 that there would be no war, but it was here in all of its grim ugliness. 1948 was a year to be remembered by people the world over. I had joined the navy in the hope of seeing the world, but instead all I saw was disaster, death, and some of my graduating class. The commander of my ship was LeRoy Alder and a tougher com- mander I never did see. The only thing that could soften him up was Mary Anne Anderson who ran a cafe in Singapore. It had a chorus composed of Vearle Baldus, Sirena Becksfort, Sylvia Carrier, Edna Mae Helmink, and Eleanor Dalman, and boy! could they swing it. The waiters included Jack Cobb and Dorman Conklin. And guess who the bouncer was-Yes, sirlw-nobody but Bob Luidens. One night who should I meet there but Dale Brondyke who had just arrived from the front. He said Company D, 126th Infantry, Holland, Michigan, was doing itself right noble. The company was in command of James Grissen, who, he said, was rough and tough-if only he didn't get wounded so often! The hospital corps was in charge of Alma Geerds. Chief machine gunners were George fYutzJ Buursma, Ervin Cook, and Robert Emmick. Harold Hewitt held the rank of captain. The troops were being constantly pestered by Harold Ingram, a news correspondent of no meager ability. If anybody got the news-Ingram was the man! He also told of the news from each home. Herbert Clemens was a big munitions maker and was making money hand over fist. It was also said that he had a case on his hands with the National Labor Relations Board, of which the chairman was Paul Rozeboom assisted by Paul Kooiker. Gertrude Jalving was married and had eight children. Raymond Kamerling was heavyweight champion of the world. Not much had been heard of Irving Lemmen and Harold Peerbolt because they had joined the runt squadron. Bernice Jacobs was Editor of the New York Times until it had gone out of business. After I had been told all this news, I told him what and who I had seen. Gordon Michmershuizen was playing Romeo and Juliet for the soldiers' benefit. His Juliet was Peggy Hadden part of the time, and Dorothy Shramek the other part. Oh, me! times have changed so little. When I had been in Africa, I ran into Charles Stopples holding revival meetings for the natives. Loretta Van Ort was a missionary also and was seriously considering living in Africa for the remainder of her life. Time was getting short for I had to report back to my ship in fifteen minutes. As I was leaving, Brondyke asked me about Nels Dyke and Charlie Wojohn. My body heaved with sorrow as I told him that Woljohn went over the top with Dyke as an escort to try to get a candid shot of the enemy general. Alas! poor Dyke and Wojohn were dead. Wojohn died with his camera in his hand and Dyke died with his hand filled with a picture of his wifegthe former Ruth Mitchell. With these words I hurried back to the ship only to get shot on the way by a sniper. I died the next morning. F1795 .Pali 'lg- fL-xg -?a5J-- ' r- W, f55,0lQ'i,?if,:?!:1a-4-.-L . . . REX CHAPMAN The Boomerang Board wishes to take this opportunity to acknowledge and extend its appreciation to all those who helped in making the annual a reality and success. The students who were zealous in putting across the magazine subscription campaign last fall are in no small measure responsible for the editing of the annual. A great deal of commendation goes to the boys of the Camera Club for their excel- lent assistance in their work with the junior pictures and in furnishing the pictures for the snap sections of the book. The art editors have worked faithfully and have striven to make the book unique and outstanding. The business managers have shown their zest by procuring sponsors for our annual and also taking care of the subscription sales. We are grateful to our sponsors-friends who have faith and interest in our Holland High School. The typists have given their time freely and willingly in order to do their part in making our project a success. The printing and engraving companies-especially the printing company-have taken an active interest in promoting and making our annual a successful edition. The editor and assistant editor, with the advice of the faculty advisers, have been the negotiators with these various people and we hope that our efforts have been exem- plified in this Boomerang. A hearty thank you to all who have helped us! THE SENIOR PLAY The Senior Class of '38 reached the high point in its activities with the production of the Senior Play, Paddy , The play was presented on March 21, 22, 23, and 24 to a total audience approximating 2,600. The play, a comedy in four acts, depicted the escapades of the tomboy, Paddy, who, according to her father, General Adair, should have been a boy . The play opened with a scene in the Ghan house, when General Adair, skillfully characterized by George Vanderhill, and Jack O'Hara, interestingly played by Julius Karsten, returned from hunting and sought Paddy. Shortly afterwards the old Irish servant, Mickey, the guardian of the whole family, played by Morris Tardiff, entered to announce that Paddy had gone sailing, a state- ment which startled the Misses O'Hara, doting aunts of jack, played by Audrey Buter and Dorothy Dalman. Paddy fvery well partrayed by Dorothy Curtis the first three nights, and equally well by Mary Anne Anderson the lastj, entering just then, allayed their fears, and in an amusing scene told how her boat was swamped and she was rescued by a suave stranger. This stranger turned out to be Lawrence Blake, man-about-town, ably dramatized by Gordon Michmershuizen. He soon renewed his old acquaintance with Eileen, Paddy's charming sister, well impersonated by Dorothy Shramek, much to the anger of jack who is in love with Eileen. But Blake only succeeded in arguing with the quick-tempered Paddy. In the second act three new characters were introduced to the audience at a party at the Ghan house that evening: Blake's beautiful cousin, Gwendoline Carew, played by Dona Zwemer, Lord Sellaby, an English bore, played by Paul Harrison, and Dr. Davy Adair, brother to the General, by jay Nevenzel. The General was warned to be quieter, but even a slight attack couldn't deter him. Eileen, now in love with Blake, refused Jack when he proposed. jack, therefore, determined to do something worth-while in the Argentine. Meanwhile, Blake, as a favor to Gwen, allowed her to tell Sellaby that she and Blake were engaged. This ruse served its purpose by discouraging Sellaby from bothering Gwen. When Paddy heard of it, she became inconsolably angry at Blakeg she told Eileen of the engagement and Eileen was naturally heart-broken. But the death of the old General put aside all other interests at the end of the act. The third act showed Paddy a year later, working in Dr. Davy's dispensary in London, Eileen was staying with the O'Hara,sg the Ghan house had been sold after their father's death. It was here in the dispensary that one of the most comical scenes took place with Mrs. Bingle and Mrs. Putter, well played by Norma Becksfort and Lois Mae Knooihuizen, respectively. The maid to Dr. Davy, Webb, was played by Anita Cherven. jack had been writing to Eileen from Argentine PAGE 40 ' 1938 I and by the time he returned, a wealthy person, they were engaged. Blake came to London and was shocked to see Paddy working there. He tried to persuade her to leave, wanted her to marry him, but she was still very angry with him and would not think of it. The act ended with his vowing that some day he would marry her, and her declaring she would never, never give in. The fourth act showed Paddy and Blake still fighting. Blake, knowing that Paddy loved the Ghan house, bought it for her, and made her accept it contrary to her will. But when she sent him away to India by finally convincing him there was no hope, she realized that she loved him. Then a series of amusing events, in which she met him just before he left, she finally conquered her pride and admitted that she loved him. The final curtain rang down upon them in each other's arms. The class of ,38 wishes to express its gratitude to the castg to Miss Myra Ten Cate for her splendid directing, to Miss Eunice Sluyter, assistant to Miss Ten Categ to the business and produc- tion committees, the sponsors, Miss Evelyn Steketee and Mr. Ervin Hanson, for their assistance. Beaten only by Muskegon, Holland experienced one of its most successful seasons in the history of the school. After beating the two Grand Rapids schools, tying the two Kalamazoo schools, and win- ning from the next two conference opponents, Holland faced Muskegon in a game that meant the championship. Holland held Muskegon scoreless during the first three quarters, while advancing the ball deep into Muskegon's territory. During the final quarter the weight and power of the Muskegon team began to show itself and they ran up two touchdowns in quick succession. Thus Muskegon won the conference championship and Holland, tied by Grand Haven in the last game, was forced to take third place. However, the season remains one of the most brilliant in the history of Holland high school and much credit should go to Gerald Breen and Edward Damson for putting out such a fine team. After the season, the sportsmanship of the team was praised by Charles Forsythe, Michigan Ath- letic Director. PAGE 42 . 1938 O Top Row: Serier, P, Van Dort, Terpsma, Dalman, jalving, Rowan. We were the only team to beat Benton Harbor on its home floor. Grand Haven was beaten twice in the same season, a feat which has not been accom- plished before in over sixteen years. For the first time since the league was organized Holland took a conference championship. If we have to concede that Kalamazoo was better than we were, we will still maintain they were the only team in the state to rate that high.
