O STIMULATE in youth a striving for the true and beautiful in life is perhaps the paramount purpose of education. The National Honor Society of Holland High School through which the abstract ideals are rewarded in a tangible manner, is an invaluable aid in the realization of that aim. To raise the standard of scholarship, to promote talent for leadership, to stimulate a desire to render service, and to foster the development of character in the students of Holland High School is the purpose of the National Honor Society as set forth in the constitution. Scholarship, service, leadership, and good character are the requisites on which elections to the organization are based. Membership in the National Honor Society is the highest distinction that may be paid to any student. The glory, however, is incidental, as its real intent is to inspire members in their quest for the lofty and the noble and to challenge undergraduates to attain to the high ideals. The flaming torch, the Society's emblem, symbolizes the steady blaze of unsullied character, the illuminating light of wisdom and understanding, the radiant glow of friendship and service, and the challenging beacon of leadership. Only Seniors who rank in the upper third of the class are eligible to membership. Of the upper third, a limited number, not exceeding fifteen per cent of the class, are chosen by the faculty. This year's group is one of the largest since the Society was organ- ized in Holland High School in the spring of 1923. The influence of the National Honor Society is being felt in colleges and universi- ties and in the world at large where members are already distinguishing themselves. The honor bestowed upon its members is not an end in itself but an incentive to further service and usefulness. E241
