A Light of Days to Come for us Thou art, O School, for aye, And all whose shining path is marked Up Learning's golden way. All honor be to him who came, The stalwart pioneer In love of freedom, love of truth, With vision of the seer! A gleam of days to come! It shone O'er sunset water broad And home and school, with purpose firm He reared as unto God. All honor to his children, too, Who still that vision bore And home and learning ever held Above all earthly store. O Glow of Days to Come make warm Anew each heart of youth To carry on through all of life The fathers' zeal for truth! A thousand thousand voices join From schools o'er all the land. From vaulted city, sunny plain They sound, a mighty band: O Fire of Days to come, of that America to be Where brotherhood shall rule, we burn For aye with llames for thee! i19l CWOf5GWW'DGWOYDGWOf5GWOfDGNUf5G'DGWOfDGWOfDGWOfDGWOf530fDCWOYD SENIORS 1931 - HOLLAND HIGH SCHOOL Senior Honor Roll 1 Sherwood Price 2 Margaret Dregman 3 Edgar Landwehr 4 Lloyd Coster 5 Leland Beach 6 Elizabeth Szekely 7 Lavina Borgman 8 James Quist 9 Pauline Potter 10 Cornie Westrate 11 Margaret Rottschaefer 12 Jerold Faasen 13 Peter Boter 14 Wesley De Witt 15 Isabelle Van Ark 16 Johanna Lenters 17 Anna Mersman 18 Mildred Albers 19 Donald Albers 20 Ruth Van Oss 21 Virginia Kooiker 22 Vivian Visscher 23 Erwin Hoffman 24 Esther Brink 25 Marjorie Matchinsky 26 Julia Ver Burg 27 Lucille Ver Schure 28 Crystal Van Anroy 29 Johanna Lugers 30 Howard Teusink 31 Josephine Kuite 32 Gordon Hamelink 33 Janet Dykhuis 34 Margaret Robinson 35 Kathryn Van Looyengoed 36 David Mowrer 37 La Mila Jean Brink 38 John Vander Meulen 39 Hazel Tellman 40 Ruth Ver Hey 41 Dora Ver Beek 42 Kenneth Karsten 43 Jake Rezelman i201 GWQIDGWOIDGWQIDGNWIDGWOYDGWOYDGWGWOVDGWWYDGNQYDGWOYDGWOYDGWOYD SENIORS 1951 - HOLLAND HIGH SCHOOL National Honor Society EARLY every high school student has the ambition to be presented with a torch pin, the emblem of the National Honor Society. Every year fifteen per cent of the members are chosen from the honor roll of the graduating class as members of this organization. The members are selected because of their character, scholarship, leadership and service. Holland High School organized as a branch of the National Honor Society of Sec- ondary Schools in 1925. Since that time many other schools have organized chapters, thereby making it a greater honor for students to become members of the society. The fact that a person is a member of this organization does not give him honor only in high school but after he graduates he is able to get a better position or it helps to give him a firmer footing at college. The society is created not merely to honor the members for past services but to en- courage them for future undertakings. So they light the torch as a pledge of increased devotion to the pursuit of knowledge and growth in wisdom g they bear the torch as a token of enthusiasm for the attainment of unsullied character g they lift the torch as a symbol of desire to render service to our God, our country and our fellowmenug and they fling the torch to hands outstretched as a challenge to other lives to 'keep the faith'. Holland High School is the only school to have an Alumni Association. Thus, the friendships are not forgotten but are renewed at the yearly meetings where the good old high school days are brought to mind. llll CNUVDGNUVDGNOWDGNUVDGNUVDGNOVDCUGNOYDGWQIDGWOVDGNUYDCWUYDCWWID SENIORS 1931 - HOLLAND HIGH SCHOOL Senior Play . , . . THE WHOLE TOWN'S TALKING HE SENIOR PLAY of '31 under the direction of Miss Lucille Lindsley proved to be a huge success. E During a financial depression, we thought it might be difficult to get crowds for our play, but the audiences of this year's senior play surpassed all previous attendances. People were heard to remark, Let's go to see it again! Miss Lindsley tried a novel experiment with this year's play cast. All major char- acters were honor students. The result of this idea was that she had little difficulty with the cast learning their lines. Ruth Ver Hey, the heroine, who played the part of Ethel Simmons, won the sym- pathy of her audience with her sweetness, while her ardent lower, Edgar Landwehr fChester Binneyj, expressed his dumb sincerity. Virginia Kooiker, as Mrs. Simmons, portrayed the part of Ethel's mother most creditably. Peter Boter, as Mr. Simmons, the jolly prevaricator, rocked the audience with laughter. Sherwood Price, as the villainous Roger Shields, almost upset Mr. Simmons' well-laid plans. Elizabeth Szekely, in the role of Letty Lythe, the movie queen, placed Mr. Binney in a most peculiar situation. john Good, the prize fighter-director, Donald Swift, almost killed Mr. Binney as well as him- self in the famous light in the dark. Lila Wilson, the lithper, and Sally Otis, her friend, respectively Ruth Van Oss and Estelline Tinholt, carried out their characters very well, Crystal Van Anroy, the maid, and Teed Van Zanden, a taxi driver, added color to the performance. Helen Raffenaud took the part of the dancing teacher and put Mr. Simmons and Mr. Binney in a most perplexing situation. Mrs. jackson and the girls, Charlotte Elton, Marion Klassen, Helen Boone, Lucile Ver Schure, Isabelle Van Ark, and Lillian Mulder, made the whole town talk. Miss Lindsley says this year's play cast has left an impression with her that will never die. She says they were among the most co-operative and pleasant people she has ever known, and she loves them all. Here's to the health and happiness of the cast of the Senior Play! l22l GWOIUCWUIDGWOVDGNOVDGWQIDGWOVDCDGNUVDGNMIDGNMIEGWUVDCWUYDGWOVD SENIORS 1951 - HOLLAND HIGH SCHOOL Tennis Van Kolkcn, Hinga. Of the many millions of people encountered ih his travels, he records only those who were former high school associates of his. 'The first with whom I came in contact were Howard Teusink and Cornelius Driscol, grea detectives, working on a very strange case of trying to discover the people who were continually shop-lifting diamonds from Woolworth's. The next stop was at New York where I attended an opera and was delighted to see Elizabeth Szekely taking the leading role. We then crossed the Atlantic. While in London I attended the English Derby Races and be- came very excited as I noticed on the program that one of the jockies was Wallace Masselink riding the world renowned horse 'Highland Lady.' You can bet your life that all my jack was staked on AH orullylitnag 7 her. While hurrying through the crowd I bumped headlong into His Majesty Mr. Hinga, o had ra C1 just received the appointment as Ambassador to England. - Scotland was our next stop. While riding through the country a ve mansio pointed out to us. My curiosity was aroused and upon investigating I found that it belong y former patroness, Miss Lindsley, and her husband Mr. Ed Donivan. They entertain royal y and'Q gave me a big dinner party. Among my acquaintances and old friends we t ous Scotla detectives, Kenneth Karsten and Gorden Elferdink. The navy was then enly C l ussia o extinguish Ed Lanwehr's Bolshevistic movement. In Germany a noted scientist, jim Davis, working on gysilistic g tr the e mosquitoes, came to see me. I was just in time to bid Bud Slagh farewell as he wa arding the Zeppelin on an expedition to the moon. Whom do you suppose I found in Paris as the model for the great painter, Charles Loyer? None other than Isabelle Van Ark. Another well-known citizen of this city was Madame Ver Beck, who was setting the styles for the world. Being lured away to the romantic country of Spain I happened upon a bull fight, and to my utter amazement saw the matador, Donald Albers, rushing forward to meet a blood-thirsty bull. Among the lovely Senoritas present were Beatrice Tretheway, Thelma Vrieling and Estelline Tin- holt. Stopping off at Italy I went to hear the famous violinist, Bud Prins. Of course peanuts had to be purchased from the peanut vendor, james Quist. Having lost his monkey, Don Te Roller was playing the role. We travelled downward to Africa where I renewed my acquaintance with Harry Beekman, a great game hunter. To appease my hunger I stopped at a tavern in Cairo where I discovered Gerald Fassen chef of the cafe. After visiting with him a while I found out that he had married Ada Dyk- stra. The two had come here to seek their fortune. As we travelled into the country we saw in the Gerritson trying to win a large sum of money given to the first person who could climb to the top of the pyramid. In rabia Shiek Lievense highly entertained me. One of the features of the program was inspecting t arem, where the favorite wives of the shiek were arranged in descending power Marjorie Be d , Helen Shaw, Edna De Weerd, Sue Leland and 'Aunt Nelly' Perkoski. Sailing on and on I arr v in India and was greatly shocked to hear that Margaret jackson had married the Indian Prrnc In China 'ted a mission school and was surprised to see Bill Vander Ven and Marie Van distance a small object trying to scale a pyramid. To my dismay 1 discovered that it was A Wezel tea img the e. Bill was instructor of music and Marie instructor of domestic arts. Naturally, ere ,w ding romance between the two. he nd stop was in japan. Here was located a delightful tea room operated by Vivian Viss er and D vid Mowrer. The subject of his sermon for the day was 'Thou shalt not stealf n ly came to Australia and stopped off at the great ostrich farm operated by Mr. and Mrs Q ormer Helen Boonej Teed Van Zanden. In Hawaii Helen Raffenaud, dancing to the f P Boter's guitar, gave a clever entertainment. I then went northward for many days, finally cruising into Alaskan water where john Good, my rmer chief of police, was spearing whales. At least he could make them behave. Upon enter- ing lifornia all of us saw upon many billboards pictures of Ruth Ver Hey taking the place of Clar Bovi and Paul Hume, as second Gary Cooper advertised in their new picture 'The Sky is t e Lrmi Newspapers were full of accounts about Vernon Klomparens, a United States Army c m- man r, who had quieted a revolt in Mexico to overthrow the government. lt,w ajrewiva neeting led by the missionary from the Canary Islands, Cornie Westrate and his X- , X cj, fu ll ' ' Traveling around to the east through the Panama Canal, imagine my surprise at seeing R th Van Oss tanned like a native basking in the sunshine eating cocoanuts.
