THE SCHOOL BOARD About the only time most of us noticed the school board was when some controversial issue arose, or else when we happened to read the monthly announcement of their meet- ings in our church bulletins. However, even though the school board does go about its business largely unnoticed, it is still a very important organ of our school.. Representing our parents, these men carry much responsibility and the decisions they make will undoubtedly affect all of us. For these decisions they are answerable to the school society and to God. It is a tremendous work these men are doing and each is worthy of our humble thanks. 10 CONGRATULATIONS AND FAREWELL, CLASS OF '59 No doubt many of you often look back and remember vividly the day when you entered high school some four years ago, young, immature, scared. Now your graduation approaches and marks quite a milestone in the experience of each of you. You have made a measure of progress, else you would not be here today. You have grown in body, you have grown mentally, and, we trust, spiritually. What about four years hence? or ten? or twenty years? or the end of your days? What true progress will you have made then? The Holy Spirit often likens a Christian life to the games and contests of the ancient world. We do not enter this Christian life or race as a matter of our own' choosing or because of any natural ability or inclination. But rather because of a Divine, external choice and a corresponding heart response of faith in our crucified Lord Jesus Christ. Having professed our faith in Him, we are automatically entered in the race, but unlike our athletic games or contests, it is expected of Christians that they shall be Winners All. ls it fair to add that the expectation of a well-run race is increased in the case of those who have had the blessings of a Christian education and are Christian High graduates? u Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto jesus the author and perfecter of our faith ..... Wax not weary, fainting in your souls ..... All chast- ening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous, yet afterward it yieldeth peacable fruit of right- eousness. Wherefore lift up the hands that hang down, and the palsied knees, and make straight paths for your feet ..... Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctincation without which no man shall see the Lord .... fHebrews 12j Read this entire chapter of Hebrews. Be determined not to be entangled with unbelief or encumbering weights. Look unto jesus and find in Him sulhciency for everything and every need. Subject yourselves to the disciplining of God, ready with reverence and awe to offer service well-pleasing to Him. Direct yourself after holiness, righteous- ness, and sanctification - knowing that it is a lifetime pursuit. Be desirous of attaining unto the goal where will be God the judge and jesus our Lord with myriads of angels and the full gathering of the saints. A As a Faculty we are happy to have had a part in your training and a place in your fellowship. It is not easy to see you leave, but as you do, it is our earnest prayer that God will bless and endow you with resolute determination, rig- orous discipline, right direction and fervent desire in order that you the members of the Class of '59 may be Winners All in this race of life. Re- gardless of their usefulness, however, they will eventually have a profound affect upon the outcome of the game. Our first moves at Holland Christian may not have been our best, but remember they were not our last either. We were introduced to the game on September 8, 1955 at which time we were thoroughly confused by the unfamiliarity of the rules. This was evident by our irregular moves through the halls in search of our position. The Challengers, seeing our perplexed state, took advantage of the situation and scored a potential victory in degrading the beginners, September 16, through initiation. Nevertheless, recovery was rapid, we began to play our own game. Taking our stand by organizing parties, we thereby demanded recognition from our chessmates. Having gained a little confidence from this stand, we were even more eager to win when the additional forces from neighboring shires entered the game on our side. Major advances, such as a skating party in November and a bonfire get together on the beach, were prevalent after this increase, and only one defeat, the retirement of Miss Grevengoed, was suffered by us. By this time it was evident that we were giving our opponents, Age and Wisdom, a battle for success. We were gaining on them, however, the October 25 party showed some of us that we must face the Truth of the matter and not feel as though we had already con- quered them, 01' we would have to face the Conse- quences. 'Q Before this time our goal had always appeared to jst be-Succeed only to conquer the opponent-without N7 the thought of building up reserve strength and energy M M at home. Now our goals have changed. Bar-B-Q and 40 NT GAME if W paper sales were the strategy of a money- Q making organization. The success of the strategy was displayed on the brilliant - faces which shone, May 9. The magnifi- cent Southern garden was a fitting back- W X ground for the radiant beams of happi- ' 5 ness which shone in the knowledge that our efforts were not in vain. e Another reward of this change was the school crest proudly adorning the school ring. Yes, we, the Class of 1959, were the first to wear this enhancing emblem. To terminate our unintelligent moves, we organized a party at Tunnel Park to celebrate our advancement. Our intellectual plays, having increased continually, were re-enforced by such highly commendable moves as the Christmas Card Campaign in which the goal of 356,000 was surpassed by 38-467, and by the sale of 695 Footprints subscriptions both typifying the enthusiasm of 183 students. Another move which was truly characterized by enthusiasm was the Senior Play, Love ix Eternal. Thirty noisy individuals, including one Freshman, I will never forget those memorable, energetic moves. Vitality for the game expressed itself in other than the entertainment side of it also, for example, T I T our Merit scholar Ken Hoek, among other honor winners. l Some future plays are being anxiously awaited im-I '-' for-a new and exciting Banquet, May 25th's skip day at Prospect Point, and, of course, graduation. T T' June 5, graduation will be the final move we make - L as one body. This will be the checkmate to one in I a series of games which form the Game of Life. -e - +- How we continue to play can only be known or i I l shown by God, for it is He who directs us. Pray that our goal may not be for ourselves, but for the glorification of our Master. 41 i K 5 1 1 l . fiifl' XSQHW Livff ' 3 .fl 1 ' ' 'ff' 'H UNDERCLASSMEN SOPHOMORES Sponsors: Mr. DeVries, Miss Dewitt, Mr. Per- senaire, Mr. Schipper, Mr. Baas, Mr. Port, Mrs. C. The next event to be prepared for was the District Band and Orchestra Festival held in Grand Rapids on March 18. Here the band received a superior rating which qualified them to participate in the State Band and Orchestra Festival. One month of intense practicing followed and on April 18, the band boarded the bus bound for Battle Creek and the State Festival. Here again the band's efforts and their long hours of rehearsing were rewarded by a superior rating. On Tuesday, April 21, the band and choir presented a combined concert. The members of the Choir, under the capable leadership of Mr, Baas, worked diligently to make the choir a real success. During the first few months of school, the choir de- voted itself to preparation for the annual rendition of Handel's Messiah.', This great masterpiece was ren- dered on December 21, in Maple Avenue Church before an appreciative audience which filled the church to capacity. The next activity of the choir was the preparation for their performance at the Good Friday Services on March 27. Again this year the choir participated in the District Festival held in Grand Rapids on April 2. The choir saw fruit upon its labor as they returned to Holland with a superior rating. DEBATE CLUB Debate clubs in the last few years have enjoyed the enviable reputation for being one of the largest and most active clubs in school. This year was no exception as thirty-five students came out to study debate and to practice it under the inspiring leadership of Mr. Bratt. Every member was an active one as each one debated at least twice during the season. At the end of the first semester an inter-club tourna- ment was held, which was won by Paul Bremer and Del Nykamp. The varsity debate team consisting of Dale Dykema and Larry Van Til as the Negatives and Ken Hoek and Tom Holwerda as the Positives, had a very successful season, winning six out of eight debates which qualified them to enter the tournaments. In the regionals the Negative won over Muskegon Heights, but met their Waterloo in a strong Grand Rapids Creston team. Looking forward one sees much success for the talents remaining are many. Here Bob Gras and jim Lucas each won second place in Interpretative and Humorous Readings respectively, which qualified them to proceed to the regional contest sponsored by Hope College. To those who participate, Foren- sics is more than a mere speaking activity. It typifies one's desire to practice the ability of conveying one's thoughts to an audience. When one feels he has accom- plished this, he knows the experi- ence has been very valuable. THE JUNIOR-SENIOR BANQUET The junior-Senior Banquet given by the Class of 1959 took place on May 9, 1958. Wfith great anticipation juniors, Seniors, and Faculty Mem- bers strolled into the Holland Civic Center and gazed at the miraculous transformation which had taken place. After many months of planning and work the bare auditorium, as we usually know it, had been turned into a lovely Colonial Planta- tion and every detail perfected the theme, Southern Acres. A delicious southern dinner was served on the landscaped grounds of the manor house by appropriately dressed Sophomore slaves The center of attraction was the beauti- fully lighted fountain which bubbled gaily throughout the evening. The highlight of the program for the evening was the operetta Mississippi Melodies. The juniors gave a delightful performance and the adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn were enjoyed by all. The conclusion of the evening found everyone filled with pleasant memoriesffof the best Ban- quet ever! VARSHY CLUB The Varsity Club under the direction of Mr. Elmer Ribbens launched the 1958-1959 school year by electing officers in the form of Ron Windemuller, presidentg Arlyn Lanting, vice-presidentg and Wayne De Young, secretary-treasurer. The Varsity Club was unique this year in its role of service to the school in as much as they instituted a school athletic store whereby all students may obtain athletic supplies. Candy and gum was also sold at all home games thereby obtaining funds for Varsity Club Pens and entertainment at meetings. The Varsity Club is a select club consisting of Varsity letter winners in any school sport. The function of the club is to cultivate a closer companionship of athletes and to be of service to the student body by promoting good sportsmanship and interest in all school sports. CLUBS For most, clubs play an important role in their school lives. We at Holland Christian are no exception. You need only to go back a few pages to see that we have a club for almost everything. Clubs, however, are peculiar functions. Some are or- ganized and promptly die out, while others seem to go on perpetually. It wasnlt too many years ago we still had a Dramatics Club, a Musical Arts Club, a Gym Club and a Sewing Club. Even this year marked the disappear- ance of the Mission Club, and the one year old Pep Club. Although we've dropped some clubs, just as many have been added. This year marked the beginning of the Mathematics Club, Others added in the last few years have been Rara Avis flogic Clubj, Varsity Club, and Art Club. There are few clubs in which everyone does as much work as everyone else. As the interests of the energetic wax and wane so go the clubs. For those who have no real interest in the work of clubs, they do provide excellent entertainment and an excuse for a night out. But, no matter what the reasons are for which a club exists, they do play an important role in school lifeg a role which all of us would hesitate to diminish, SPORTSMANSHIP E :EMSYEXHEEQTQEYS 22335333523 23: 142653 7350 f I ' ' , - U ' . :iii K J 2SSS9 Nefi ' - ' ' ' I VARSITY TEAM Standing: jim Smits, Vern Wedeven, jim Hulst, Frank Visser, jack Bouman, Henry Sterken. Although ending the season with 8 wins and 9 losses, the team displayed great potential talent. After last year's phenomenal season, our team had a tremendous reputation to live up to. However, as what usually happens after a very good year, we lost many fine veterans. Therefore this year was spent rebuilding the squad. Because of this, we got off to a rather poor start, but as the season progressed, we improved with every game. Since only two seniors were on the team, most of the members Will' be returning next year. This would indicate that prospects for a successful season next year are bright. We cannot give enough praise to Mr. Tuls for all he has done for the team. His inspiring leadership, excellent coaching, and scrupulous sportsmanship will long remain in the hearts of the players and spectators. Our praise would not be complete without lauding the efforts of the individual players. The often cold suppers, the aching muscles, and the long hours of BASKETBALL practice all command our homage. So to these boys we offer heartiest congratulations for all they did to provide recreation and enjoyment for the student body. Coach Tuls Q Standing: Ivan Volkers, Len Buursma, Steve Steggerda, Clare Van Wiereii, Paul Steigenga, Tom Bouman, Doug Winde1nullei'. Sitting: Glen Wedeven, Dick Valk, Paul Tuls, Ned Meurer, Dan joldersma, jim Fredericks, Alvin Compaan. Absent: Harold Diepenhorst, Ken Disselkoen RESERVE BASKETBALL The reserve team was much like the varsity in that they turned in some very line performances and others that weren't quite as good. Always displaying great spirit, however, the reserves showed they had what it takes to make a good team. Their record Q10 wins, 7 lossesy is very deceiving as it fails to tell the story of several close and heartbreaking losses. The reserve team has many members, with great potentialities. With these developing rapidly, we can be sure that hopes of a bright basketball future for H.C.H.S. will not be smashed. This year marked the end of an era for our reserve teams. Coach Pott recently announced his resignation as coach. We are truly sorry that future reserve teams will not be able to reap the benefits of his fine coaching. Still we are confident that his dynamic leadership will live on in the memories of his reserve teams, As we look into the future, we can only express the desire that the man who comes to fill Mr. Pott's shoes will be able to fill them and carry on the fine work he has done. Coach Pott RESERVE CHEERLEADERS Marcia l.aGrande, Marg. Van- DenBerg, Mary Talsma, Judy Bouwman. Middle row: Don Klaasen, Ken Wierda, Ken Disselkoen. Front row: Bob De Boer, Alvin Compaan, Clare Van Wieren, Maynard Schrotenboer, jeraad Van Der Wall, Vern Den Bleyker, Erwin Nagelkirk, Harold De Young BASEBALL The baseball team is looking forward to a very suc- cessful season. Coach Ribbens is building this year's team around a strong nucleus of returning veterans. The following veterans are expected to lead our team to a successful season: jim Hulst, who last year played first base and also pitched some excellent games, is expected to handle the biggest share of the .mound duties this season. He will be backed up by another pitcher, Vern Den Bleyker. Hank Sterken, a catcher back from last year, is expected to turn in a strong performance behind the plate. Some of the other players who saw a lot of previous action are jerry De Koster, an outfielder-first' base-mang Wayne Van Dyke an infielder-outfielder, and Ben Bonselaar an infielder as are Al Compaan and Bob De Boer. Last year's team compiled a 6-5 record, however, this is a little deceptive as three games were lost by only one run and the last tive consecutive games were won. Last year's team relied on very excellent pitching and defense allowing only thirty one runs in eleven games. These are also expected to be the strong points of our coming team. The baseball team played the following home games: April 6-Zeeland, April 27-Grand Rapids Christian, May 1-Grand Rapids South, May 20-Hudsonville, May 25-Muskegon Christian, and the last game- Unity Christian, under the lights. The team played the following games away: April 21-Fennvilleg April 29-Unity Christian, May 5- Muskegon Christian, May 13-Hudsonvilleg May 18- Grand Rapids South, and May 21 Grand Rapids Christian. Coach Ribbens Standing: Dick Boeve, Cal Lubbers, Earl Bouwman, Dick Valk, Andy Blystra, Cal Hulst, jim De Vries. Kneeling: Marv. Tucker, john Hofman, Dave De Vries, Clare De Boer, Wayne De Young, Bernall Schrotenboer. TRACK Track is probably the least known sport at Holland Christian High Schoolg however, this year's team will try its best to bring to it some of its due recognition. The boys are those seen running toward the twenty-seconrl street track in what appears to be grey pajamas Coach Persenaire The previous team ended the season with a 1-4 record, but our track team is hoping they can improve over last year. This team will have a lot to learn, how- ever, as there are only a few lettermen returning. Mr. Persenaire is coaching them this year and it is hoped that some of his Cross-Country Team runners will give some added strength in the longer runs. The 1959 team is expected to be the strongest in the dashes with veterans Dick Valk and Wayne De Young, last year's leading point-maker. Wes Schripsema will lead the hurdle candidates. There are no returning players in the 440 yard, 880 yard, and mile runs and it is hoped the Cross-Country runners can take up the slack here. There are a few more veterans in the held events. Vern Wedeven and Earl Bouwman are high jumpers back from last year and expected to make us fairly strong in this department. Cal Lubbers and Howie Lub- bers are veteran pole vaulters and are expected to do most of the placing in that division. Dick Valk a vet- eran, leads the broad jumpers, The shot put is wide open to anyone who thinks he is good at throwing a twelve pound steel ball. The track team will have away meets with Grand Rapids Christian April, Zeeland May 5, Muskegon Catholic May 8, possibly Allegan April 24. The track team will have a home meet with Unity Christian April 28g however, Mr. Persenaire is trying to arrange for a few more. -aa K 'N S gf ff. 1 i 1 E 'wgm 2:2 , 4.41 S if EWS , Q i x exif Sm QS in iii 'Fifi 13 R? 3, ' E D' w ii if' W Q l f W 'iaxivi 1 - 1 Del Van Dyke, Vern Ramaker, Paul Tuls, Paul Steigenga, Walter Hoeksema, Cal Deur, Paul Piersma, Bob Arppledorn GOLF Coach Holwerda Even though the cold north winds were still blowing, Coach Holwerda took the team to the local ,American Legion Golf Course for a good work out. The nine man team, composed of two seniors, three Juniors, one Sophomore, and three Freshmen, is a member of the Western Michigan Golf League. This league, consisting of North Muskegon, Comstock, Montague, Zeeland, and ourselves, comprises the five teams necessary to participate in a Round Robin. A Round Robin is merely a game in which all the mem- bers of the league play each other and match scores to determine the winner, The league will hold two such matches. The other matches will be between member schools of the league on an individual basis. So far this season our team has defeated Zeeland and has about four more matches coming soon. Our team this year boasts a lot of talent and should experience a very rewarding season. Doug. Windemuller, Vern Wedeven, Ivan Volkers, Jerry Van Wyke, Dave Mannes, Bern Evink, Tom Buursma, Ken Walcott, Ken TENNIS Walters, Arlyn Lanting, Terry Pott, jim Langeland. Coach Pott Interest in tennis has been on the upswing for the last few years. This year interest is growing even higher. Sporting good team balance, our team is having a very successful year. Mr. C. Pott, the new coach, has built a fine strong team. The schedule for the year is one which consists of top class A and B. To date of this writing they have not yet lost a match. Mr. Pott, who is taking over the reins from Mr. Grissen, is not new to tennis. He was coach some years ago when we won the state championship doubles. Among the players of the team, Arlyn Lanting has had the most tournament experience. Arlyn has won the regional singles championship two years in a row and is expected to do the same this year. Playing No. 2 singles, Bern Evink was the runner-up in last year's regional tournament. We have a good doubles team in Ken Walcott and Doug Windemuller who often face much tough opposi- tion. With this experience and much new talent it isn't difficult to predict wonderful things for our tennis team's future. i S 5 i K in f'S mw 1 .
