It is a school where the Bible is studied and V X ' taught as the true Word of God and as the rule for our lives, where man's responsibility to his neighbor is derived from his responsibility to Godg where the universe is studied as a work of G0d's hand, where history is studied as God's plan for the world, where the greatest good is that of glorifying God. When we entered Christian High, most of us did not realize the great importance of a Christian education. Now, when we bid farewell to our Alma Mater, we see that the knowledge acquired here equips us in our future life. Our own personal gain is not the first thing to be sought after. Our hr't I ' ' s service is to God and then to our fellow man. Her thoughtfulness and pleasing personality have won her many friends. Her exem- plary life has been an incentive to each student's development of Christian character. Seeking wisdom rather than gold has truly been her goal. In recognition of her faithful service, we, the Class of 1949, do dedicate this volume of the Footprints to MISS JEANETTE VELTMAN. ISI 4 We, as the Senior Class and student body of Holland Chris- tian High School, want to take this opportunity to bid farewell to Mrs. Bratt, who for four years has been our English instructor. During her stay at Holland Christian, she has been active in Forensics and has taken charge of the Speech Classes. In 1946 she was the able director of the junior Play. Due to her recent marriage to Mr. Hero Bratt, Miss Westveer has decided to leave us. It is the mutual feeling of all the students and teachers that we shall miss her greatly but that her influence will always remain. So it is to you, Mrs. Bratt, that we, the Class of '49, wish God's choicest blessings on your married life. As this Annual goes to press, word has been received that Mr. Keuning, our Business Math and journalism teacher, has ac- cepted the position as principal of the Fremont Christian School. It is the mutual feeling of both student body and faculty that we are sorry to see him leave, nevertheless we extend our best wishes to him and hope that he may be successful in his new field of labor. . . Miss Lucille Bouman, our office girl, will always be remembered for the hundred-and-one things she does so willingly and cheerfully each day. Mr. Dykstra deserves our sincere gratitude. It is his duty to make our school appear respectable and clean. Mr. Wm. Pott efficiently carries on his work as financial agent. It is his task to keep our school alive financially. We also express our deepest and sincere gratitude to the Eunice and Monica Aid Societies for their financial aid and valuable time which they have sacrificed for us. 1161 E, as Seniors, find it difficult to consider our annual complete this year with- out devoting a page to a man worthy of recognition. For twenty-five years Mr. Westerhof has been Holland Christian High's faithful custodian. His helpfulness and patience have endeared him to the hearts of both students and faculty. We hope that our school may continue to benefit from his work for many years to come. As a tribute to his willing and efficient service, we, the forty-niners, do express our sincere appreciation to Mr. john Westerhof. It is not as closely attached to us as our teacher, principal, or superintendent. In accordance with the high standards of our school, this Board obtains for us Christian teachers, who lead us into the paths of wisdom. As the ruling body of our school, it keeps our education on a high level, lead- ing us to the goal which is set before us. We should remember them in their responsible work and ever be thankful to God for giving us these Christian leaders to direct our school. Seated: M. J. Tinholt, T. Hoeksema, Rev. -I, Voskuil, Rev. O. BOS of New York University Superintendent To the Class of 1949: Hearty congratulations to each one of you upon your graduation from Holland Christian High School. Farewell students-welcome to the ranks of the Alumni Associa- tion! Four years ago graduation from high school must have seemed to be a distant dream which would never come to reality. However, the years passed swiftly and you are now on the threshold of a new phase of life. As you start out again, I would like to call your attention to a wonderful passage from God's revelation to us which is found in the sixth verse of Proverbs 3: In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct thy paths. This word of the Lord includes both a command and a promise: a command to ac- knowledge God in all our ways and a promise that He will direct our paths. First of all, we must acknowledge Him within our hearts as our Creator, our Benefactor, our Father through Christ jesus our Lord. Then we shall not find it difficult to recognize Him in all our undertakings. As young people you will have serious choices to make in life concerning your vocations, your friends and your partners for life. We must desire to do what is right and pleasing in God's sight for only that will receive the divine blessing. Of course, He does not promise that He will make us prosperous or that He will exempt us from trial and tribulation but, since He assures us that He will direct our paths, we know that all will be well. May the words of this passage from Scripture be a challenge to each one of you as you journey through this life. God bless you and keep you close to Him always. Cordially yours, BERT P. A HOLLAND CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT CO-OPERATIVE ASSOCIATION. The pet peeve of the students has been that the students have had nothing to say about their school. The constitution was drawn up last year under the direction of Mr. H. Kuiper. The senators and officers were elected and began to serve as Council members at the beginning of this school year. The Council staged a contest to find a suitable name for our school athletic teams. They are organizing the noon hours to provide fun and supervision for the lunch students. The Student Council has arranged for student chapel once a week. At our home games the Council provided for the presenting of arms and colors between the Reserve and Varsity games. The Holland Christian High School Student Council has been admitted as a member of the National Union of Student Councils. Once a week all members meet to discuss suggestions brought to them by the students. The object of the Council is to promote student interest in school activities and to give them a school gov- ernment of which they can be proud. t14l TU EN fe ?lv' gk 5 'v. Initiative and ability are the main assets in attaining success. The Junior Class has already proven that it possesses these qualities. Ability has been shown by the large number participating in various extra-curricular activities. Several are Band members, and thirty-four belong to the Choir. They are also well represented in the field of sports, having four members on the varsity basket- ball team. In our Student Council, they have two officers and three representatives. Initiative has been shown by the junior Class in their projects for raising funds to sponsor the annual junior-Senior banquet. Every member has done something to make this class a success, but without the help and guidance of their faculty sponsors, they could not have attained this goal. The Freshmen class which entered the halls of Christian High in '47 has developed into a promising Sophomore class. Their entire enrollment amounts to one hundred forty-seven members. This enrollment tops all others of the preceding years. The members of this class prove their talents by participating in Choir, Band, and various sports. They have seven members in Senior Choir, eleven in junior Choir. They have several members in both junior and Senior Bands. They are well represented in sports and they also compose the entire Biology Club. Prospects for the future look promising, providing the hard work is continued. Lastly, but not least, they wish to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors of their class, who have helped in many ways to make this year a successful one. SENIOR PLAY Curtain time! Curtain time! Yes, this cry kept ringing in the ears of the play cast on April 21 and 22, the nights of their performances. It surely must have been heard by the townsfolk too, because the crowds were enormous. The play, The Closed Door, is a three act comedy drama. It portrays the story of two families who have again come to be friends after a long period of hatefulness. Issy Cohen and Marion Mudge supply the comedy, while Louise and Portia Grey carry on the drama. Their wonderful production was the reward for their fine co-operation and the able direction of Mr. Pott.
