In preparing the 1944 Boomerang We as a staff have tried to preserve as many of these memories as possible with the hope that in future years We can look back with fond memories on our high school days. BOOMERANG BOARD PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF HOLLAND HIGH SCHOOL l s jelicalfion In honor of all those former graduates and teachers of Holland High now serving the United States in the armed forces we respectfully dedicate this Boomerang. It is our sincere hope that when the day of peace dawns we may find them unharmed and ready to help build a world strong for peace, and help strengthen those ideals for which they are lighting today. It is our prayer that they may have the strength and courage, which is so typical of America and of Americans, in these trying times when they need them more than ever before. MISS MINNIE K. SMITH 'A' 'A' 1' 'k 'A' i' 'A' Zin illllrmnrium Miss MINNIE K. SMITH It was with deep regret and sorrow that the school board accepted the resig- nation of Miss Minnie K. Smith, former principal of junior High School, last spring. It was a loss beyond compare, to the Holland Public Schools when Miss Smith passed away in the lirst part of May, 1943, completing thirty-one years of service in the schools of Holland. Miss Smith's life was a life of service to the youth of Holland and to many others. She joined the Holland school system in 1912, as a teacher at Van Raalte School. In 1914 she joined the staff at East junior High School, and later became principal. In 1927 the present junior High School was built and Miss Smith served as principal of it until the date of her death. Miss Smith's first concern was for the students entrusted to her care. Our gains were her joys, and our losses were her sorrows. The memory of her untir- ing works and splendid achievements will always be remembered. Her ideals and accomplishments will always be a guiding light to those who have known her and have had the privilege of Working with her and for her. 'k if 'k 'A' 'A' 4 In Recognition MR. GERRIT DE VRIES After 29 years in the employment of the Holland Public Schools as a cus- todian, Mr. Gerrit De Vries was forced to resign because of failing health. As Mr. De Vries leaves Holland High, we all wish to extend to him our heartiest congratulations on his many fine years of service, and our most sincere hopes for happiness in years to come. It is with regret that Mr. De Vries retires after so many years of service. He served in East Junior High from 1915 to 1919, and in 1920 came to Senior High and has served here until the present year. MR. Across the front page is splashed the city-rocking story of a two-car collision on the corner of Sixteenth and Pine Streets. The cars, driven by Donna Ter Haar and Drew Miles, caused considerable damage to the automobiles and surrounding property. Both were given fines for speeding by the right honorable judge Dale Drew. Next to attract our attention is a picture of our young mayor, jack Tirrell, ofliciating at the opening of Holland's new youth center above Bob Fortney's hamburg stand. Reading farther down we hnd that Hollis Brower, chief-wart-remover at Heinz Pickle Company, cut his hnger today while scraping warts from pickles and was rushed to Holland Hospital where Doctor Donald jalving performed a minor operation with Nurses Thurber and Wallace assisting. Fire Chief Don Milewski estimated a loss of 3500 to the Borgman Laundry when fire razed the two-story establishment yesterday. Third column down we find that the honorable and respected Deacon De Wilde was clipped today while returning on bike from an evangelistic meeting. ln the left corner we read that Gerald Klein has been elected as head of the Western Michigan Gas Station Attendants Union. Of interest also is an article telling of test-pilot Jim Van Dyl-:e's just breaking in the new Lockheed Flying Fuselage designed by Chet Timmer. On the social page we find that the annual concert directed by jack Ketchum with Betty Brinkman as star soloist will be held july 10, and that the famous contemporary artist, Phyllis Victor, will present her new series of paintings on the beauty spots of the metropolis of Holland at Douglas Art School next Wednesday evening. On the want-ad page we find: Wanted positiong any kind as long as work is not included by - Earl Borr, and in the lost and found - Lost - a reputation and found - a future for the Senior Class of 1944 Respectfully submitted, THE CLASS PROPHETS. The play was attended by the largest crowds in the history of Holland High School, and was exceptionally well received by all. As far as financial success is concerned, the play broke all previous records. This was due in no small part to the splendid work of Mr. Hanson and Mr. Damson, both of the business staif. The play was exceptionally well presented with a fine cast doing a job that would be a credit to many older and more experienced actors. To Miss Calvert for her splendid work on the play itself, goes our deepest appreciation. The cast in order of appearance is as follows: Harry Graves joe - - Grace Graves Hilda - - Lois Graves Judy Graves - Fuify Adams - J. B. Curtis - Ellen Curtis - Willis Reynolds - Barlow Adams - Western Union Boy Merrill Feurbach - Sterling Brown Albert Kunody Tommy Arbuckle Charles - - Henry - - - Haskell Cummings - Dale Drew - Tim Harrison Helene Van Dyke Beth Van Lente - Ruth Bax Virginia Bender Doris Diekema - junior Hill - Miriam Slagh Dale Vanden Brink - Drew Miles - Roger Gunn - Jack Tirrell -Clayton Weller Donald Jalving - Bob Smith - Bob jacobusse - Paul Lokker Bob Draper 'A' 'A' 'k i' 'A' i' 'A' 'A' ir 'A' 'k 'k me-1' QQWQHH, Wm F' mxQ.,,f g .5 l ' 'X , f' 7 ,ziffw . VICTORY COUNCIL The Victory Council this year has done an excellent job in cooperating with the war effort. In charge of the Vic- tory Council are all bond and stamp sales of Holland High School, which are higher this year than ever before. This in itself speaks well for one of our most valuable organi- zations. HI-Y The Hi-Y is an organiza- tion of which Holland High has a right to be proud. Tak- ing an active part in many school activities, it has been invaluable to the school as a whole. The Hi-Y has also maintained an interesting pro- gram of its own and is com- pleting one of its most suc- cessful years. PERSONNEL BOARD The Personnel Board is one of the unsung heroes of Hol- land High. It is their job to record the activities of the students and to evaluate them. ATHLETIC SISTERS The Athletic Sisters have this year again sold confec- tions at all athletic contests of Holland High. Proceeds from sales go to the Athletic fund. CHEER LEADERS The Cheerleaders have, as always, led the student body in cheering at our games, and the spirit with which the stu- dents take part, speaks well for them. FOOTBALL There were a great many disappointing features in this year's football season, but there were also a great many encouraging things. The team could hardly be called a success from the standpoint of a won-lost per- centage, but bright hopes can be forecast for the coming year as Coach Mackay has almost an entirely veteran team returning next fall. The Dutch this year won the first two games, but from then on were besieged by a countless number of sicknesses and injuries which left the squad at only part of its potential strength and, consequently, the results were not up to par. However, the fact that the Dutch were a constant threat to their opponents is shown by the fact that Bob Kuipers, a junior, and jason DeVries, a senior, were placed on the Southwestern Conference second team, t i' i' i' 'A' 'A' 'A' 'A' 'A' if F 3 '3- 'W 2235 Q, Iggy: Q. wk Q.. BASKETBALL This year's basketball team was typical of Holland High teams, in that it featured a fighting, scrappy team which failed to hit the heights they were capable of. The Dutch, however, were more than just another team in the Southwestern Con- ference. Three times they gave the Muskegon Heights Tigers, conference co-champions, a-real scare by playing the type of ball that had the fans on their feet all the way. ln the other games the team maintained a five hundred per cent average, winning 7 games and losing 7. Next year we will find three of the regulars back as well as a good number of reserves. One junior, Ken Dewaard, was honored by being placed on the All-Southwestern Conference team. The track team is looking forward to a fairly good season with the few returning regulars bolstered by a good number of reserves. The baseball team has so far won its first two games and is anticipating putting in a strong bid for the conference championship. The tennis team is defending the conference championship this year, and with the chief opposition being expected from Muskegon Heights and Grand Haven, a close race is in prospect.
