PIONS I95O-5I In the middle of August, Coach Jess Keifer and his assistants, Cliff Bosley and Bart Kline, started form- ing a team that soon would be rated mythical State Class B Champions by Gregg McBride of the Omaha World Herald. Playing a schedule of three Class A and six Class B teams, the Dusters' record, seven wins and two losses, was one of the two best in the history of Holdrege teams. In the Omaha World Herald Class B All State selections, Henry Poole was selected as a back. Don Leffler was on the Honor Roll. In the Lincoln Journal's rating, Poole again was chosen for the first team. Lanny Kingsley earned a berth on the second team as a guard. Dusters on the Honor Roll were Ted Peterson, Keith Lindquist and Don Leffler. Poole and Leffler made the Southwest Conference first team, while Ted Peterson was chosen on the second. Roger Fandry, Marv Nel- son, Lanny Kingsley, Hersch Graber, Keith Lindquist and Chuck Haines were honor members. Eight Dusters received Star of the Week Cards during the season. LOOKING OVER EQUIPMENT in the cage are Jess Keifer, football coach and Cliff Bosley, assistant. ir, 4 T Peterson L. Erickson H. Graber K. Lindquist TED PETERSON, GUARD-HHH DON LEFFLER, TACKLE--HHH Ted played in the center of the line on defense. He was a keen diagnostician of opp-onent's plays and did a great job of calling defensive signals. LLOYD ERICKSON, TACKLE4H As a rough tackle, Lloyd played enough to letter. His team spirit and willingness to cooperate made him a valuable man to the team. HEL GRABER, CENTER-HHH After playing guard for two years, Hersch made the switch to center in fine fashion. He learned to center the ball right where the boys wanted it and was a terror in backing up the line on defense. LINDQUIST, HALFBACK-HHH Keith completed his third year of varsity play this season. He was a great competi- tor and an all-round backfield star. He made several almost impossible catches that helped carry Holdrege to victory. D Leffler H. Poole C. Haines Don finished his third year of play this season. He played left tackle and trouble was in store for anyone who tried to go through his side of the line. HENRY POOLE, FULLBACK-HH Hank's linebacking and blocking left little to be desired. He kicked twenty-one out of twenty-six placements for extra points and his all-round play made him a val- uable cog in the Duster football machine. CHARLES HAINES, QUARTERBACK-HH Chuch developed into an excellent passer this year. His fine passing, hard running, and signal calling made Chuck one of the best. He should be a great player next season. ORVILLE POOLE. GUARD-H Orville came along until the middle of the season so that he was playing his share of the time. He should be an excellent player on next year's team. O. Poole J. Oglevie u R. Anderson R. Nelson RICHARD ANDERSON, HALFBACK-H Rich played his first year of football this season. As the fastest man on the squad. he used his speed to good advantage. RONALD NELSON, HALBACK-H Ronnie did a t'ine job playing at blocking back. He blocked the key man on all Dufter plays. ln the Lex game Ronnie in- tercepted three passes to help set up the margin of victory. LANNY KINCSLEY, TACKLE-HH l.:nny transfered to Holdrege at the be- ginning cf his junior year. He t'inished his sescnd season of being a regular at right tackle on the team, and his blocking was an asset to the team. ROGER FANDRY, END-HH Rogers pass catching constantly made him a thorn to the team's opposition. His fighting spirit kept the team on its toes and made him one of the Dusetrs outstand- ing men. ROGER BURGESON. GUARD-H Roger played in several games this S621- son at both guard and tackle. ln some of the close games, he relieved the regular and played good football. PETE WAGNER, GUARD-HH Pete switched from tackle to guard this year. His fast charge made him very val- uable cn defense. His fine team spirit made Pete a valuable man on the first eleven. JOHN EASTER, HALFBACK-H A scatback who came through when the chips were clown, John was consistent in the holding of the ball for placekicking, and fine spirit made him a valuable asset to the team. MARVIN NELSON, END-HH Marv played the important right end posi- tion. His ability a blocker made the r,l'l'-tackle plays go for lots ot' yardage. WARNER OLSON, EN D-H Warner started slowly but developed into a very good player as the season progres- sed. His pass receiving in the McCook game was outstanding. Warner should be a great player next year. ?0 4- ' . 1 V f .eww if -, t A .- X ' . KX HOLDREGE 13-ORD 0 After practicing hard for three weeks. the Dusters were eager for actual combat and ex en though the play was ragged. Holdrege showed too much offensive power for the Chanticleers. Hank Poole accounted for all of Holdrege's scoring. HOLDREGE 14-GOTHENBURG 12 Much improvement over the first game was shown during the second half after the Swedes had taken the lead 6-0. Opening the second half, Holdrege scor- ed twice on long marches with Haines going over both times. Eventually Henry Poole's conversions spelled the margin of victory. KEARNEY 21-HOLDREGE 7 The second half proved fatal for the Dusters as they met their first defeat of the season against the Kearney Bearcats. Hold- rege completely outplayed and outdowned their opponent during the first two periods, but lost the game in the last half. L. Kingsley R. Fandry R. Burgeson af' ,iw . 4 ,Ii 90 I . HOLDREGE 38-COLLEGE VIEW 43 Road trips were again against the Hold- rcge boys when College View triumphed five points over the Dusters. Coach Bosley's team was fast and accurate during the first quarter. but once the Viewmen were started, they didn't stop. HOLDREGE 29--BEATRICE 30 Chuck Haines, netting 10 points, played his best game of the season against Beatrice. The Dusters held a lead at the end of every period, but were held to only one point while the Orangemen made seven in the last quar- ter. HOLDREGE 31-MINDEN 41 Having the poorest shot percentage of the entire season, the Dusters fell before Minden for their fifth loss. Dean Olson was high point man. HOLDREGE 34-GENEVA 49 Meeting their fourth consecutive defeat, thc Dusters were still unable to surpass their third road trip opponent this year. This was the fifth defeat for Geneva over any Holdrege teams. HOLDREGE 46--SEWARD 39 Striving to return to the win column, Coach Boslev and his team chalked up a sixth victory. He brought his high school career to a brilliant close by his remarkable shot against Min- den in a second overtime that sent the team to State. Co-captain. Marv earned a place on the Southwest Conference first team. JOHN EASTER, FORWARD-GUARD-H John was the smallest man on the squad, but probably with the most spirit and fire. DEAN OLSON, FORWARD-H This was t'Deano's first year of varsity competition, and he measured up to the task in a remarkable manner. His special- ties were tip-ins. Co-captain Dean was the most improved player on the squad. R OLSON, FORWARD-CENTER-H Warnie was a player who could really ly Hget-up on rebounds. He was a team player with lots of determination, spirit, and the will to win. THORN, GUARD-H Dave's progress can be attributed to a strong determination to be a better bas- ketball player. He was a very fine team player. Dave Thorn and Warner Olson were valuable to the Dusters for points. HOLDREGE 40-NORTH PLATTE 53 Being pressed hard by a top Class A team, the Dusters held close behind trailing only by one point at the halftime. The loss of Eldon Peck because of a knee injury, was a definite handicap. HOLDREGE 52-BROKEN BOW 29 Coach Bos1ey's first rested most of the last half in an easy game with Broken Bow in the first round of the District Cage Tour- naments at Lexington. HOLDREGE 53-GOTHENBURG 45 In the semi-finals it looked as though the Dusters could easily win the state champion- ship if they played the superb ball shown against the Swedes. Marv Nelson led Hold- rege with 27 points, but Chuck Haines looked very good with 12. HOLDREGE 38-MINDEN 36 As always happens in contests between Holdrege and Minden, neither is winner un- til dying seconds. This was absolutely so since it took the Dusters two overtimes to win a ticket to the State Tournaments. The loss came hard because Holdrege had led throughout the con- test until the last few seconds. Dean Olson was high point man in the game which lost both Haines and Nelson at costly times. HENRY POOLE, FORWARD-GUARD--HHH Hank was a player wih lots of bustle and drive. His driving lay-ins made many points. The team felt his loss when he reached his twentieth birthday in Feb- ruary.
