This line from a famous hymn has especially challenged me in various moments of the past year. This is a militant era. Mankind is segregated into factions. One finds himself at odds with his friend, his family, his neighbor. Move- ment upon movement emerges into the mainstream of life and then exits with quiet, futile hostility. Toward what end do our militant legends march - and bearing what banner? Students of Holding Institute, the possibilities of your lives are un- limited. You have inspired me with your courage, daring effort and accomplishment, You hold the key to the mystery of the meaning of life today in whatever little area you are destined to serve. The challenge for you today is to eye the door of Truth and march toward it. Will the key you hold open the door toward which you march? With whom do you march? Under what banner do your footsteps blend with the pulse of the future? May we say together with the stalwart Joshua, challenging the militants of the Old Testament, Choose you this day whom you will serve . . ., but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

It is possible for two people who have wide difference of preference and opinion, of habits, of teaching, of training, of background and belief to enjoy the company of each other in many ways. Indeed, a diversity of friendships is one of life's real enrichments. To learn of the goodness of those who are unlike--their worth, their sincerity, their good hearts, their good minds, their good company - - is rich and rewarding. It is wonderful to have a wide range of choice friends who can be counted on, friends who can be enjoyed and loved and trusted. Such is the meaning of friendship. RICHARD L. EVANS
